This.

LB should be a team strength in 2016, which hasn't been the case in decades, with pretty much everyone from the two deep returning. Of course, unless a Junior or RS-Sophmore beasts this year and then jumps to the NFL a la Philon, we return pretty much everyone from our current defensive two-deep in 2016.

Not making excuses for Bert, but we were starting Austin Jones and Price Holmes at LB in 2013. You don't climb out of that hole overnight, but we did a damn good job of making huge strides in 2014.

Thinking about it, our whole defense in 2016 will be disgusting. We lose Gaines, but our young safety play has been promising. Do we lose anyone else of note that I'm not thinking of?

Defense in 2016 MIGHT be good enough to offset the losses on offense.

ETA: We lose Sleepy, Hodge, Loewen and Gaines. It's a safe bet to say that all of their replacements will be better except maybe Gaines. We gon b gud.

Our defense in 2016 should be the best in the last 15+ years, easily. Of course, this assumes we don't have a string of injuries and/or NFL exits.

Just think if every junior decided to come back on offense

Probably won't happen, but it would be nice.

Yep. Was thinking the same thing the other day when looking at the depth chart. We're playing a ton of juniors and sophomores with a few true and shirted freshmen in the mix, and we'll return a ridiculous number of guys from the two deep. From that list, it's looking like we only lose Gaines as a starter.

If we can somehow hold onto a few guys on offense (Henry, either Kirkland or Skipper, Collins), 2016 will be stupid.

+ Ricky Towns, Rafe, and Storey battling for the QB position. I think not having anyone to push Brandon has been a hindrance.

Agreed. He's been the unquestioned starter for since Brandon Mitchell transferred and hasn't had any legitimate competition for the starting job. To me, it's pretty telling that that's Bert's aim when he was pumping up Austin in camp last year and touting both Austin and Rafe this year. Of course, it could be worse -- we could have Bama's QB situation.

It'll be interesting to see that dynamic next year and if it breeds some good competition between the (presumably) four QBs.

I don't see Towns coming here...I mean shite he's transferring already.

I don't think he's Bert's kind of guy IMO

Bert was on Bo Mattingly's show today. Some tidbits from the Twitters:

Bo Mattingly ?@SportsTalkwBo
Bielema: We’d love to have J-Will with us and we’re a better team with him, but we have other guys who can step in & fill the void.

Bo Mattingly ?@SportsTalkwBo
Bielema: We’re going to be able to throw the ball a lot better. BA has great ability, our pass pro will be better & we have better talent.

Bo Mattingly ?@SportsTalkwBo
Bielema: MLB is a spot where you want to have some moxie, someone who has respect in the huddle.

Bo Mattingly ?@SportsTalkwBo
Bielema: We’re never going to be the sexy school that wins recruits just by blowing them a kiss. You have to develop the ones who can play.

Clay Henry came on later and said that he talked to Robb Smith about linebacker situation. Said Robb Smith's comments on Brooks Ellis were essentially "he's not going to be a good Will linebacker, he's going to be a great Will linebacker." Also gushed with praise about Dre Greenlaw as well.

I recall being beaten severely about the head and ears for saying the same thing in different words on HV once upon a time...

Supposedly the USC QB transfer is on campus and will be at practice tonight.

In fairness, Bo did sort of take that quote out of context. I listened to the replay of the interview at 5:30, and he was saying that that was something Bill Snyder used to say a lot when Bert was on Kansas State's staff when taking about how important it was to develop players to build depth.

Not saying you're wrong or anything, just pointing out that Bo picked that one out at random even though it was really in direct reference to us.

i'm concerned about LB but we an always move ellis back to MLB, and go with williams and someone else ont he edges

I really think that a school like Arkansas should be running the 5 2 or the 4 2 5 we don't have the depth to run the 4-3

They've basically been running a 4-2-5 for the past decade and a half or so with the third "LB" being undersized and moved down to safety because someone was coming on at the position, yadda, yadda, yadda

Well they can run a 4-2-5 all they want if it gets the results that it did last year over the last half of the season.

Didn't they give up something like 24 points in the last 4 games and 14 of those you can hang on the offense for the way they stunk it up against missou after the 1st qtr. never giving the defense a break.

Patterson has had success with the 4-2-5 in the Big 12.

Arkansas's schedule is going to be big12esqe as far as defense vs offense this season.

TTU- obvious
aggy - big 12
Auburn - Gus doesn't feel like they will have a good run game and will have to air it out, as of this week = big 12
Mizzou - big 12
OM - big 12

Bama may be forced to go to the ground due to their QB situation.

LSU is always IN when it become to ept offense.

Tennessee will be big12esque.

Ms. State, read option.

My how the SEC has gone soft on offense in recent years...

That still doesn't change the fact that the SEC is a run first league.

If you can't defend the run in this league, or run the ball, you don't win the league.

Defending the run was the Achilles heal of our Petrino teams.
