I keep hearing Saban wont be able to communicate with the rest of the coaches after a certain time period. Anyone know if this is correct?

He can't communicate with anyone starting 90 minutes before kickoff.

It was posted in several threads with a link to ncaa rules stating he can't talk to coaches 90 mind before the game.

What's the rationale behind this rule? When Derek Dooley was injured while he was at Tennessee, he was in the pressbox. What is it about COVID that is different?

Or is it because Strong will be on the field?

A) That's a dumb rule. He's the HC and there is no health issue with him communicating with coaches in the booth from home.

B) No way in hell, anyone can prove that Saban communicated through his daughter or wife sitting right next to him to his coaches in the booth.

C) I fully expect Saban to be in communication with his staff during the game, as he should. If it's found out later on, fine us, charge us with secondary violation of rules or whatever. Don't care.

If Saban could be in the pressbox, then he could communicate with the coaches on the field. But because of covid protocols, he can't be in the pressbox, so he can't communicate with the on the field coaches.

While it would be technically possible for him to go to an isolated box without exposing anyone, I don't think the SEC office would go for that, and I doubt it would happen.

Would we even want Saban to be coaching from home? The game happens fast and who knows how good of a feed could be provided in terms of video quality, delay, and view of the field. And the coaches and players would have to spend time simulating a game under those conditions.

If they absolutely wont let Saban be in an isolated luxury box, then we should request that they allow Saban to address the team via Skype before the game and at halftime. Also let him communicate halftime adjustments to the coaches. If the SEC is concerned then have a trusted SEC official in Bama's lockerroom.

$100,000 fine from SEC if any program violates covid protocol, per Sankey.

Coach from the isolated press box and pay the damn fine!

Dooley's injury wasn't a highly contagious infection. Covid-19 is.

SEC Covid-19 protocol rules do not permit quarantined coaches, staff or players to be in any athletic facilities or around other coaches, staff or players.

Other existing NCAA rules strictly limit remote communication devices to a maximum number of coaches headsets used only in the sideline area, pressbox coaches booth or locker room. This limitation is effective from 90 minutes before kickoff through the end of the game.

It appears there's no workaround that's not a rules violation.

If Saban has to stay at home, I want a reality show to be broadcast from there. It would be awesome.

Agreed. Not allowing Saban to coach from an isolated booth violates all common sense. It’s bullshite

You guys are missing my point. I'm not saying Saban should be in the pressbox. I'm saying that if Dooley could be in contact with the sideline via radio or headsets, why can't Saban have a line set up to Sarkisian's headset?

There is zero competitive advantage taking place here. It’s ridiculous that a coach has to literally be cut off from his team during a game.

Maybe you're missing the point. The NCAA rules only allow headsets to be used in the sideline area, pressbox coaches booth and locker room, and prohibit using any other communication device. Dooley was able to be in the pressbox coaches booth and therefore could communicate via the headsets. Per the SEC's Covid-19 protocol rules, Saban isn't allowed to be anywhere a headset is allowed to be used. It is what it is. Unless Saban tests negative today, Fri and Sat, he cannot be at BDS nor communicate with the team (from 90 minutes before kickoff through the end of the game).

The experts are always talking about the "science". There is zero scientific reason why Saban couldn't be isolated in a booth with no one around and have a headset that he takes home with him so no one is infected.

I will never understand this kind of a reaction to a virus that at worst kills maybe 5% of 85 year olds, and is statistically less dangerous than the flu if you are under 45.
