Volleyball Closes Road Weekend with Four-Set Win over Arkansas State

Alabama volleyball closed its weekend at the Ball State Tournament Saturday with a four-set win over Arkansas State by set scores of 26-24, 22-25, 25-18 and 25-16.

The opening set between Alabama (5-4) and Arkansas State (5-4) came down to the wire, tied at 23-23 before the Tide reached set point twice and ended it on a Red Wolves attack error to win, 26-24. Arkansas State started set two on a 4-0 run and held the lead for most of the frame until a huge 8-0 run put Alabama ahead 21-20. The Red Wolves rebounded however to take the set, 25-22, and even the match. Tied at 7-7 in set three, a 6-2 run allowed the Tide to begin pulling away and maintain the lead for the remainder of the frame for the seven-point win. It was the same story in set four, as Alabama broke away after a 7-7 tie score to win, 25-16, and take the match.

For the second time this weekend, Kendyl Reaugh led the team in kills with a career-best 18, adding 13 digs for her third double-double of the season. Laila Smith was also in double figures with a career-high 10 kills, hitting .562 out of the middle and a team-leading five blocks. Brooke Slusser also finished with a double-double (41 assists, 12 digs) and Sami Jacobs was just one kill shy, finishing with nine with 11 digs. Sydney Gholson tallied a career-high five service aces, accounting for a third of the team's season-best 15 aces at the service line.

Alyiah Wells was also named to the Ball State Tournament All-Tournament team, hitting .338 over the weekend with 32 kills and 16 blocks.

SwimSwam previewing the top men’s and women’s swimming teams. The Tide ladies come in at #4. More info via the link.

COLLEGE SWIMMING PREVIEWS: #4 ALABAMA WOMEN RETURN ALL NCAA SCORERS, RELAY LEGS

#4 ALABAMA CRIMSON TIDE
Key Losses: Morgan Liberto (NCAA Qualifier), Tanesha Lucoe (NCAA Qualifier – diver)

Key Additions: Laci Black (Freshman – TX), Charlotte Rosendale (Freshman – CA), Stella Grace Watts (Freshman – FL), Lockett Bowley (Freshman – FL), Kylee Grafmiller (Freshman – TX)

Returning Fifth Years: Rhyan White (38 NCAA points), Morgan Scott (32 NCAA points), Kensey McMahon (28 NCAA points), Kalia Antoniou (9 NCAA points), Cat Wright (NCAA Qualifier), Ashley Voelkerding

2022-2023 OUTLOOK
Given Alabama didn’t lose any NCAA scores from last season, or even a relay leg, they’re in great shape heading into the 2022-23 season. They have possibly the best sprint free group in the NCAA currently, headlined by 2 NCAA ‘A’ finalists in both the 50 and 100 free with Morgan Scott and Cora Dupre. Additionally, Rhyan White is one of the best backstrokers in the NCAA, and frankly, in the world currently. Avery Wiseman was huge for Alabama in the breaststroke events in her freshman season and will be looking to build on that success in her sophomore season.

Perhaps the most intriguing discipline for Alabama this season is distance free, where Kensey McMahon suddenly has a whole training group. The Crimson Tide is adding three freshmen who have already been sub-16:30 in the 1650 to the distance squad, which features an NCAA title contender in McMahon. They also have a trio of mid-4:40s 500 freestylers to add to McMahon’s 4:38 in the 500 free.

They’ll look to take a step forward in the IMs this season as well. Bama had three swimmers race the 200 IM at NCAAs last season, though all three were off their season bests and none advanced to finals.

Diving is a weakness for this team, but they still managed a fourth-place finish at NCAAs last season without any diving points, so that shouldn’t stand in their way this season either.

It’s also the first season where Geer will begin to make her own mark on the recruiting side.

All things considered, Alabama looks very live for another top-five finish, though it may be a challenge to break into the top three, given the talent Virginia, Texas, and Stanford have on their rosters. Given the gap between fifth and sixth last year at NCAAs, our prediction is that the Crimson Tide will be battling NC State for fourth place again this year, just as they did last year.
