Double Boom!
Alabama Cross Country Sweeps Individual Titles at SEC Championships Friday Morning
Mercy Chelangat won her second-consecutive SEC title, while Eliud Kipsang won the men’s championship, with both wins coming in course-record times
Alabama swept the individual titles at the 2021 Southeastern Conference Cross Country Championships Friday morning in Columbia, Mo., with Mercy Chelangat winning her second-consecutive title, while Eliud Kipsang won the men's championship.
Chelangat is the first member of the UA women's team to win back-to-back SEC titles and her win marks just the second time the Crimson Tide has won consecutive individual titles, with the first coming in 1987 and 1988. Chelangat's and Kipsang's wins also mark just the second time Alabama has won the men's and women's races in the same year, and the first time since 1988.
Both Chelangat and Kipsang won with course records. Chelangat became the first woman to cover the 6-kilometer Gans Creek Cross Country course in under 20 minutes, going 19:55.2, while Kipsang lowered the 8-kilometer course standard to 23:33.5.
Over a rain-soaked course, the women finished third in the team race after tallying 91 points, while the men took fourth after totaling 132 points. In addition to Chelangat's win, Flomena Asekol took seventh, Amaris Tyynismaa was 8th, Esther Gitahi took 11th and Leahrose Mami rounded out the Tide's scoring five after taking 69th place. For the men, Kipsang was followed by Victor Kiprop in fourth, Hillary Cheruiyot in 22nd, Gavin Saacke in 55th and Carson Burian in 56th.

Home town write up on one of the recent Track and Field signees
Ulanda Lewis signed by University of Alabama
Vincentian Ulanda Lewis has been added to the University of Alabama Track and Field roster for 2021/2022. This was revealed on the university’s website recently.
Lewis, who turns 17 in December, has been able to ink the deal based on her consistent times in the 100m and 200m.
A former student of the Buccament Government School and the Barrouallie Secondary School, Lewis has been making a name for herself, both locally and regionally.
Lewis has racked up several record-breaking performances. At the primary school level, she holds the 150m Under-15. At the secondary school level, she is the record holder for the Junior Girls 100m, as well as the Intermediate 100, 200 and 400m.
Nationally, Lewis has pouched the Inter-Secondary Schools’ intermediate records in the 100, 200 and 400m, along with the St Vincent and the Grenadines Under-20, 100 and 200m best times.
In Lewis’ second year at the Junior Carifta Games in the Cayman Islands, the 15-year-old then, took bronze in the Under-17 100 and 200m.
Thus, she became the youngest participant to have medalled at that edition of the Games.
Also, in 2019, Lewis took the 100 and 200m gold medals at the Windward Islands Secondary Schools’ Games in Dominica and had a record -breaking run in the Under-17 100m at the Whitsuntide Games in Grenada, leaving the best mark, which stood since 2001, to be history.
Her performances overall that year, earned Lewis the Junior Sportswoman title at the National Sports Awards, held in 2020.
Additionally, Lewis has picked up several sports, academics and leadership awards at the Barrouallie Secondary, where she graduated this year after completing five years at the institution.
Lewis is expected to travel to the USA to begin her new exposure in January, 2022.
SEARCHLIGHT congratulates Lewis on gaining her Athletics Scholarship.
