Yeah they ended up disappointing but let's not pretend they weren't big gets.
What is the point of a "big get" if they end up being disappointing?
All of our "big gets" for the past few years, except for Sexton, have not helped the program at all. Who cares about stars at the point?
John Petty is our 2nd highest rated recruit in the last 8 years or so, how's that working out for us?

Eh, while that may be true, I don't want to start rationalizing poor recruiting with the whole "stars don't matter" excuse. That said, stars are a good indicator, but not the end all of recruiting. I'm confident Oats will recruit well though.

I'm happy with the pickup today. KAH looks like he will fit the Oats system. Hopefully he keeps recruiting players for his system regardless of stars. It would be great to get 5 stars, but like you said it's not the end all be all.

I agree they can be a good indicator, but they don't always equal results.
John Petty
Devonta Pollard
Mardracus Wade
Trevor Lacey
Shannon Hale
Jimmie Taylor
Justin Coleman
Braxton Key
These are the highest rated recruits we've signed in the last 10 years besides Sexton, Releford, and Randolph.
All sizzle and no steak.

I think we're all on the same page.
This was going to be a small class anyway. I wonder if we'll add anyone else or if this is what Oats meant about being "all in on the 2021 class?"

I think we need to make a push for Bediako to reclassify. Both Penn and RI killed us in the paint. While Davis has been pleasent surprise, we need length

We have his only two crystal balls, but we're listed as "cool." What's the story on him?

Yeah, it would be awesome if we could get him reclassified and signed.

In need of further frontcourt help, Alabama came up with a big win on the recruiting trail on Sunday. Rivals150 forward Keon Ambrose-Hylton gave his verbal commitment to the Crimson Tide just weeks after his official visit to Tuscaloosa.
“There style of play, development and coaching staff was big. I just felt comfortable talking with coach (Nate Oats) about everything,” Ambrose-Hylton said about his college choice. “I had a great time seeing the campus and the crazy atmosphere at their basketball and football game."
Ambrose-Hylton selected Alabama over Arkansas, Dayton, NC State and USC. He sits as the 99th best prospect in the 2020 class, and as the 20th best power forward nationally. A native of Ontario, Canada, Ambrose-Hylton is completing his high school career at Andrews Osbourne Academy in Ohio.
Standing over 6-foot-8 and equipped with quality length, Ambrose-Hylton is the ideal hybrid power forward in today’s game. He has great end-to-end speed and tremendous potential as a defender of many positions. He can make shots to the perimeter but is even better off of the attack in which he uses his long strides and athleticism to finish in the lane.
A member of the various junior Canadian national teams throughout the years and a standout at last February’s Basketball Without Board Camp in Charlotte, North Carolina, Ambrose-Hylton made for a solid showing on the Nike circuit this summer. Running with the UPlay Canada team, he posted per-game averages of 14.2 points, 6.5 rebounds, 1.5 assists and 1.3 steals.

A couple of those turned out to be pretty good players, just not for us.
Lacey was actually decent for us and better at NC State.
Pollard got royally screwed by a POS parent. Once he got out of that mess he ended up a starter and double digit scorer at Houston.
Also, it isn't fair to put Petty on that list at all. He's a whopping 3 games into Oats' tenure. Let's give him at least this season to see if the new system brings out the potential that got him an offer from Kentucky.

Honestly I think those were only put in because KAH was leaning towards committing to us. It seems like we have been recruiting him for awhile though. I'm just hoping he wants to join Ambrose.

We definitely need a rim protector

I'm not trying to be argumentative or be a dick, but again, that did/does nothing to help the program. Being a bust obviously only hurts the program. A player like Pollard or Lacey turning out to be a pretty good player for another program is just as bad or worse imo. It essentially becomes a recruiting spot that we wasted on someone that didn't really help the program.
Now that i've bitched and complained enough over my last three posts, I fully admit that i'm a star gazer when it comes to recruiting. I'm just reminding myself, and anyone else that wants or needs to hear it, that recruiting ranking don't always pan out. Bediako is a top 40 player in the 2021 class, so I 100% hope we get him.

Michigan State just offered 2021 prospect Charles Bediako, a source told @Stockrisers. Duke is also heavily interested in the Canadian prospect.

Honestly, the biggest thing for me is that Oats actually knows how to coach and what type of player he needs to make the system work.
I'm willing to be patient and trust him to get it done.
I had zero confidence day one with Avery because I knew he was just an NBA "coach" which is just a glorified babysitter and has very little to do with team building and Xs and Os.
It's one of the most overrated coaching professions.

Agreed! I just want him to recruit players for his system regardless of stars. The big time recruits will come eventually if he gets the right players for his system to win early in his tenure.

Nate Oats on recruiting: "We said as a staff, 'We've got one senior. We really only have to get one. Let's not settle for somebody that maybe we should get. Let's go after some guys that can turn the thing around. Let's swing, and if we swing and miss, we'll still be alright.'"

a) We as Alabama fans should know better than to star gaze. The FOG in you should scream that CNS don't give a shite about no star ratings, CNS does what he wants and turns them into 6 stars. Seriously, Nate knows what he needs for his design. Buffalo didn't start kicking arse because they started landing 5 stars. Let the man work. He saw a couple of opportunities to maybe steal a guy or two and he took a swing. Didn't work. Next man up.
b) John Petty is in his 3rd year on campus and if anything, he's worse than the day he arrived on the offensive end of the court. Props to him for trying to compensate with defense and rebounding, but we recruited him for his shooting. Don't expect the light bulb to come on and him start channeling Steph Curry.
c) Nate is doing an saying all the right things. Eventually, it will start to work. Maybe not with these guys (other than Kira who's a natural for this system) but we will get there. This team is doing some of the things they are supposed to be doing but they are doing them poorly and out of control. Other things they aren't doing at all. They are still learning how to play this way and they aren't very good at it. We're going to take some arse beatings this year and unless it starts clicking for more than the couple of guys that seem to get it like Kira and Herb, it's going to be a longer year than we thought. I can live with that if better days are coming.
d) I think Nate and staff are all in on 2021 to totally revamp the roster with their guys and to really get things rolling. 2020 will be patched together with mostly leftovers and the pieces he's been able to bring in and we'll be better but 21 will really be the coming out party.
