I think he had to have least insinuated he was 99% gonna commit to us for Oats to tweet what he did then Quinerly retweet it. I don't have any inside information on the subject but I will be surprised if he doesn't commit in the next 24 hours.

We are pretty loaded at the 4, Reese, Jones, Gary, and Rojas. We are more thin at the 5 with really Galin Smith the only semi proven player there, Rojas will probably play both depending on the situation.

I only see Gary and Rojas as being 4s in that group. Jones maybe on certain occasions/matchups where it makes sense. He’s just too valuable of a perimeter defender to stick him at the 4 too much IMO. As you said Oats is going to have to tinker his offense a bit to fit our personnel, but I really don’t see Reese much at the 4. I think Reese + Hawkins/Smith/Fleming would slow things down too much.

Hard for me to see Reese playing the 5. He has the size but doesn't seem to have a post game. I think he would be a great 4 in this offense, he can rebound pretty well but is probably the best spot up three point shooter on our team aside from Petty.

I'd hate to waste his spot up three point shooting by him playing 5 all the time. With Mack gone it makes Reeses' shooting even more important IMO.

Post game isn’t a high priority in the Oats offense. He’s mentioned how he likes to run 5-out if he can. Main thing to worry about with Reese at the 5 is a severe lack of rim protection, but no one on this team really offers that either (maybe Hawkins?)

Rebounding and defense at the 5 are really important in his system though, as he said today his teams can't run if the 5 can't defend and rebound.

This would be my prediction on the depth chart as of today

1. Lewis/Bolden/Shackelford
2. Bolden/Petty/Shackelford
3. Petty/Jones/Forbes or Gary
4. Rojas/Reese/Gary or Jones
5. Smith/Fleming/Hawkins

Before Oats raved about Smith today I assumed Rojas would be the 5 since he likes a big man who can shoot, and the rest of our bigger players outside of Reese don't fit that criteria.

Rojas and Reese are both versatile enough they could play the 5 if needed and one may have to depending on how quickly Fleming and Hawkins come along.

Gary and Herb are versatile enough to play the 4 if we want to put a fast lineup on the floor.

I agree it’s important, but Smith just hasn’t been that guy yet. Reese has actually rebounded at a better rate than Smith (both have been bad) and Smith’s defense hasn’t been terrible, but it’s definitely nothing to write home about. I really hope Smith just blows us out of the water next year, but it concerns me that he’s the Big that’s been getting the praise. I was hoping it would be Hawkins who I haven’t seen enough of to know if I like his game or not I have a feeling that a lot of people who underestimated the effect of Hall’s departure are going to be eating crow next year.

Yeah I was't thinking it would be Smith either, but Oats seems to like him a lot, maybe he is working really hard and improving. I would love to see Hawkins step up be a main contributor by conference play.

I like the Idea of Rojas, or even Reese playing the 5 more than I do Galin.

Galin being the best defender at the 5 seems to be what has him ahead currently.

It would be nice if Reese and Smith could improve their positioning. Basically, just get better at getting in the way.

They're not going to all of a sudden start blocking a bunch of shots or generally terrorizing other teams.

So, personally, at Buffalo, if you look at the way we played the last two years, we played with two point guards. We essentially started two points guards, a combo guard and a 6-7 two-guard at our four perimeter spots, and then we basically played a shooting four at the five.

What he likes in his 5 sounds a lot like Alex Reese.

Im guessing

Kira
Petty
Beetle
Rojas
Reese

Our starting 5 IMO.

Where do you guys think gary plays if it isn’t the 4?

I assume we will have 3 guards on the floor most of the time and isn’t really a good enough ball handler or shooter to play the 3. Mack would’ve been a good 3.

Not sure. All I know is the Pitt fans are very quiet, and there hasn’t been a positive outlook from that visit like there was with ours. Quinerly’s last retweet is still that Oats tweet

Here's a direct link on Youtube.

Favorite quote is when he's talking about offensive efficiency at 20:16 and new coaches always talking about how fast they'll play at the press conference and it never comes to fruition (Avery).

quote:

I think we were fourth in the country in offensive pace of play last year. I know we were number one in transition PPG. We've been in the top 10 in offensive pace of play in the last few years. Our numbers back up how we play. I ain't going backwards.

I love Coach Oats. He may not win a single game, but damn, it's hard not to buy what he's selling.

Saw some tweets from some guy named James Fletcher. He’s a reporter for WVUA-FM and co hosts a podcast called Bama Baseline.

Someone asked him for his projected starting 5 next year and his included Quinerly. A follow up question was then asked regarding Quinerly getting a waiver to be eligible immediately and this was his response:

quote:

Right now I’d say it’s close to 50/50, the NCAA has been very inconsistent with their rational and Quinerly does have a case based on “mitigating circumstances.”

Not sure if this guy is just a fake insider or if he may actually know someone that knows someone that knows something, but figured I’d pass it along anyway. No idea what “mitigating circumstances” he’s referring to either.
