Tbh the Oats comments mean absolutely nothing. I don’t think he’ll leave, but he’s sending the same little paragraph to everyone like he doesn’t want to say much. We’ve seen time and time again coaches make a statement like this and leave........the guy he looks up to did it best (Saban)

Didn't some of us want that assistant from Michigan. Seems ideal to just hire him for the season, see if it works out, and then make a decision next year.

Saban made that statement in the middle of the season.
It Oats wanted to leave there’s no reason to say “I want to be Alabama’s coach.” Not to mention you usually don’t make a recommendation for a job you really want.
Two different situations imo.

Hope the timing just isn’t right for the deal bc it would absolutely suck losing him right now . He has done well recruiting in a short period and keeping the roster together . I would shutter to think what would happen if he left at this point

Anyone else listening to the Michigan sports radio show? I've had it on for a while and no mention of Nate Oats. Might have happened before I started listening though.

That may be the only option were it to happen

Why doesn’t Michigan go after Avery?

Because they don't have Bill Battle as their AD

Update: Nate Oats first name mentioned in their group of second tier coaches. Hoiberg was second.
Top Tier they mentioned was Brad Stevens, Mark Few, Tony Bennett, Billy Donovan, and a couple others.
ETA- He was unsure of how realistic Oats would be since he just got hired and could have a large buyout

I don't think there's any reason to worry right now. Three years from now, if he's been successful, maybe. Right now, I think he's all in at Bama.

Their sports radio hosts think any of these are possible? The majority of our most delusional fans didn’t come up with a list so ludicrous.

I was hoping we wouldn't have to deal with this problem till two three years down the road. It's now here even before the man has started coaching.
This how we end up with undeserving extended contracts and huge buyouts for coaches.
It's a good racket, even for marginally successful head coaches.

I’ll give you the name of another successful coach with midwestern roots: Bruce Pearl. Started at Southern Indiana and made his first big splash at UW-Milwaukee. If they are swinging for the fences, maybe Bruce hasn’t signed his new deal yet.
Seriously, at this late date, Michigan will have to pluck a promising mid-major or lower tier major guy or promote an assistant like Yachlich. Not just any coach is going to leave a program at this time because at this juncture, somebody’s basketball program is getting screwed this season. No way around it unless UM promotes from within.

Oats having ties to that state, being a high school championship coach & then working his magic in Buffalo, its logical they would want him, however, he's mentally focused & invested to taking Bama to places its never been with not near as much pressure considering coaches here before were failures. Now, having said that, the 1st big season he has in Ttown, there will probably be offers from top college programs as well as NBA. The association will love his fast, uptempo, pressure defense style of play.

Anybody hear Oats interview on the roundtable? One thing I hate is everytime they have a Bama BBall coach on they always wanna talk about the NBA for the majority of the interview ...WE DONT CARE!!!
But yet everytime they have Bruce on they let him talk about and sell his program.

Nate Oats on the radio: “Anything less than the NCAA tourney is unacceptable” LINK
Posted on 5/13/19 at 1:02 pm to Bamafan18
I heard that. Certainly exudes confidence and what we'd hope to hear from our coach.
But, recall Saban never mentioned anticipated results any year.
I'm surprised Oats spoke this publicly. However, considering both the relative youth of Oats and the current state of the program, perhaps you have to pump some sunshine and high expectations for your fans and potential recruits to absorb.
