LOL - it's possible.

I agree with your point, but I think Lawson could have been a solid back up for us. He was a much better ball handler and passer than he got credit for, and he knew how to run the offense. When I say "offense," I mean what Avery called an offense, not what traditionally passes for one.

I think Schaffer’s playing time was limited more so bc he was a liability on defense rather than his size and athleticism limiting him offensively.

He had elite handles, very good change of direction, vision, and was probably one of the best shooters on the team.

Defensively, he couldn’t compete with elite athletes. And he was never going to jump the coach’s son on the depth chart.

Agree - by the time he was a junior or a senior. I also think, like you said, he was better than the option we had which was awful, but that isn't saying a whole ton.

And as was noted above, his biggest issue was probably defensively (which was also a concern with Shack).

Place your bets now! Bama has a 0.2% chance to win the NCAA tournament. I can only imagine the odds go up if they actually get in.

I'm not entirely sure how good he'd be in a system where he had to take more dribble 3's and mid-range jumpers and less catch and shoot 3's, but man he is comfortable with his shot almost no matter the traffic around him. I think that is one of those things you just can't always figure out whether it will translate or not.

I’m not sure there’s a system out there where he wouldn’t at least look like a promising freshman. The system here has helped him become one of the best freshman in the league, but it’s hard to see him not fitting in every system.

Every system needs good shooters and at the very least, he provides that. I think he’s just scratching the surface of what he could be. In high school, one of his biggest strengths was shot creation of the dribble and while we’ve seen a small glimpse here and there, once it’s his team, I think you’ll see a lot more of that.

Agree, you are right - I meant specifically this year as a freshman. The system played to his strengths. Like you said, he's proven he has the ability to get tough baskets in traffic and with contact.

Sky is the limit for him offensively. I'm tickled to death that we'll get to watch him for another 2-3 years. He's the type of player we've all been craving for years now.

Theoretically if we win tonight we are probably very much back in the discussion.

Obviously that only means we give ourselves another shot to shoot ourselves in the cock n' balls and remove ourselves from the discussion, but it is what it is.

That said, I like what I've seen from Forbes. He obviously committed to getting better defensively. He's improved immensely from the beginning of the season.
Just from limited time watching him in warmups for the 3 games I was able to see when visiting this January, it seems he has a nice, smooth 3 point stroke that he's just not replicating in game pressure and certainly not strong/quick enough with the ball in traffic.

However those are among the most fixable issues for a freshman. I think he'll end up being a very solid player even though your point still stands comparing him to Shack who looks like an future All-SEC caliber talent.

I agree he might have a spot in the rotation eventually if he doesn’t transfer out, but I think that’s his ceiling. He’s looked A LOT better recently, but he was also awful all-around until recently. I know he’s a freshman, and those young guys can and will get better, but one thing I ask myself about freshmen to estimate their future viability is has he done something to demonstrate his potential? I still haven’t seen that moment. Even during this recent stretch, I wouldn’t say he’s done anything impressive, he’s just been way closer to decent and hasn’t cost us games.

I hope I’m wrong and he proves himself as an eventual SEC starting caliber wing. I just haven’t seen anything suggesting that kind of improvement.

This game is huge because the best way to overcome a mediocre record is to have some great wins. Luckily we should get at least 2 more Quad 1 opportunities. If we were to win tonight, drop 1 of our final 3, and beat Aub/UF/LSU/Arkansas in the SECT we may just slip in at 20-14 with 4 quad 1 wins

I would argue that Forbes has had some huge defensive and rebounding plays recently. . . couple of very important steals and blocks as well as taking a couple of charges.

(A couple of times TV announcers have said "that's what a Herb Jones does for a team" only for the replay to show it was Forbes)

Anyway, I agree that we never really know how a guy will improve from year to year and Forbes ceiling may be more solid 20-25 rotation player.

However, there's a lot of reason to hope an athletic 6'5" guy with a very smooth 3 pt stroke who puts in a ton of effort on defense can become a key player on a winning team.

I think we'd almost certainly be in with 20 combined total wins. Tonight's game is huge in that it would also give us a decent shot at getting in with 19 total wins.

That said, I'm cheering and hoping but don't have a lot of confidence that we're not 17-14 yet again going into the SEC tourney.

My thoughts on this game are sort of the same as they were for Ole Miss:

I am not very confident in our ability to win a close game in Starkville, so we need to come out and jump on them and win relatively big. Or at least be up relatively big and hold on.

Seems less likely considering State is better than Ole Miss, but it’s possible.

Completely different game in the sense that Perry is good and Ole Miss’ big men were awful.

We've played well recently on the road. This 1 is certainly a challenge.
1.State has won 6 straight at home so they are due to lose there.
2.Big 6'11 Reggie Perry got into early foul trouble, limiting him to 23 minutes in our January blowout win.
3.State was adjusting to getting Nick Weatherspoon back from a 10 game suspension in the 1st matchup.
4.State is 2nd in the conference in field goal percentage at 47%.
5.We are 1st in SEC with 83ppg, 35% 3point%, way ahead in 3 pointers made at 298.

Bottom line, State is certainly gonna want payback tonight but we gotta bring the desire/fight just as much, stay hott from the 3 line, our bigs just focus on fighting as hard as they can on the boards, giving all they got.
Tall challenge for sure right there.
