Yes, it sucks that we lost and the defense was bad, but people are overlooking the injury situation with the defensive effort.
We have 13 scholarship players.
With Rojas & Gary out for the year and Quinerly ineligible at the moment, that is down to 10.
After Herb got injured and couldn't return, that's down to 9.
Of those 9 players, Hawkins isn't ready and is redundant at forward in a 4-out lineup with Galin, Davis, & Reese, so he is likely going to redshirt.
So 8 players available in a high-tempo system Beedle and Reese hurt, not practicing for a week, and only playing as game-time decisions out of absolute necessity.
Kira had to play 38 minutes and Petty had to play 35 minutes, at break-neck pace. It's pretty hard to defend late when your legs are that heavy.
I'm not making excuses. It is what it is. Way too early to make some season-long and system-defining opinions about this game when we lost by 1 to a decent team and had 2 FTs to win it with only 8 bodies and two of them hobbled.
Y'all breathe.
Hopefully Herb is ok and Quinerly gets his waiver approved. That is an entirely different 2nd half and we get the win if you add two more players to the rotation. We got really unlucky with the Herb injury, because that not only took away our best defender, but it also kept our other guys out on the floor too long.

A little too much hand-wringing over this game it sounds like. Penn is a quality ball team, and Alabama despite many mistakes and looking out of sorts on defense lost by 1 point in a game they should've won at the end with either just one defensive stop or free throws.
Agreed. If it continues to happen, and against worse teams, I'll start to worry. We beat the absolute shite out of Ga Tech and they won their game against NC State last night. I know it was just an exhibition game against them, but Bama was the much better team.
But, it's year one. And, while I do expect to have a good year one, even if we don't, it's not necessarily a sign of the future. Let's just see how this team progresses.

Like I said in an earlier post, we win the game if Herb doesn't get hurt. That had the butterfly effect on defense and free throws.
#1, it directly impacted the defense because he is our best defender without a doubt. He is one of the best defensive players in the whole country. He shuts down a few of those 2nd half pick-and-rolls by himself.
But #2, we lost his minutes, and only having Kira, Petty, Shackelford, Bolden, Forbes, and Reese to rotate through 4 positions for the rest of the game wore everybody down. They had to play WAY TOO MANY minutes in a game that was running at warp speed.
Tired players aren't very good defenders. Nor does it help with free throws.

I actually managed to stream the game last night, and I can tell you that until we get some bigs who aren't statutes on defense we are going to struggle to win games if the 3s aren't falling. We will have to win on offense because the paint is going to be open for business all year long.

I think Rojas was that guy. And Gary was another Herb type defender IMO from what we were hearing. Those 2 losses are gonna be our downfall. I love Galins effort but he just isn’t good. Reese is very Good on offense but sucks on defense. I think Javian is gonna be decent though.
Ideally goin forward if Herb isn’t hurt we should start Herb at the 4 and Javian at the 5 IMO

Oats is going to get a technical sometime this year, which I good I guess considering Avery never did anything to work the officials.

I remember him going after refs many times in a more NBA style where he tried to create a running dialogue, he just walked the line to avoid techs. I am all for being excited about what Oats brings, but we don't have to retroactively edit the past.

Reese is "slow-footed"....he's always been and always will be. It took a horrible misjudgment of talent to have offered the kid a major D-1 scholarship....that's on Johnson.
Reese wasn’t offered a scholarship for his defense. The kid was highly recruited by major D-1 schools. Oats is also high on Reese so it’s definitely not just a Johnson thing.

Oats says that publicly, but he isn't going to trash his own player in the media. Reese is here for his offense, but he can't be so inept on defense that he forces us to play 4 on 5 on the other end. Otherwise he doesn't need to get minutes.

He offers nothing in the post though. He’s a tall set shooter with a decent 3 point shot. It’s frustrating. Really miss Hall

I don’t care if he is good or not we just need him as a body at this point.

Nice segue for something I wanted to bring up, since I was not able to watch or listen to the game - what is Nate Oats' in game demeanor as a coach? How was he responding to the players when they weren't playing well, when officials made bad calls, etc?

He did a good job at working the refs, he def has a more intensive demenanor. It didn't stand out as much to me though because the Penn Coach was so vocal.

Just noticed that our 3 post players had a combined 8 points.... woof
Posted on 11/6/19 at 12:12 pm to RTN
we had times last year that 3 of our starters combined for under 10 points. We going to have to outscore people this year and when the FG% gets under 40% it will be a long night.
