Today is Groundhog Day, which like the movie, our basketball seasons are eerily similar.
Last night's game was a gut wrenching loss.
Shackelford had 28 points.
If either Kira or Petty contributes with 18-20 points we win.
When you have key players out other starters have to step up offensively to win & unfortunately we only had 1 who did so.
We'll continue to watch & support but the optimism is unfortunately low.
Coach Oats is doing the best with the hand he's been dealt with.

Yep.

I've already penciled in the season as done (especially with Herb injured) until they prove otherwise. We've seen this same song and dance one too many times.

I'll just be glad when Oats gets his own guys in and starts from scratch to make these guys mentally tough. Hopefully he can recruit well.

I'll be surprised if he can't. The style of ball he plays is perfect for recruiting kids who may not be elite coming out of H.S. It's a fun style with a lot of "street ball" in it, and the array of young players who fit well in it is huge. The key to its success, IMO, is being able to get this type of kid to play 40 minutes of hard, focused defense.

It's not as big on running plays as it is on running, gunning, and finding the open 3 point shooter, or taking it to the rim.

Yeah, I love how far this team has come and I really am proud of them but...I just wish Petty and Kira were tougher mentally and played through adversity. Our glue guy in Herb went down. We needed someone to step up. Shack did his part, all he needed was a little help.

I saw several possessions that must have drove Oats crazy last night. It did me. There were several where we collected a defensive rebound and Arkansas was slow to get back up the floor, but instead of Kira pushing the ball and the tempo to maybe catch them unprepared and get an easy bucket, he trotted up the floor with the ball. Nate is screaming push it, push it, and Kira was either too tired or not paying attention and missed the opportunity.

We have very different definitions of street ball then. To me street ball is what we ran under Avery. A bunch of half court iso and pick and roll looks with more 3s off the dribble than catch and shoot. Our offense this year bogs down because players, most often Kira, are making the wrong reads. Bad reads in a motion offense lead to stupid turnovers. Good reads lead to easy baskets. When we make 4 or 5 good reads in a row we look unstoppable. When we make 4 or 5 bad ones in a row we commit 3 turnovers and watch a 10 point lead evaporate in 90 seconds because we are absolute dogshit on defense.

You don't think a pick and roll is pretty common in a pickup game? Maybe not if you're talking about a bunch of guys who have never played organized basketball before, but if you just played a bit in high school running basic pick and roll is about the easiest thing you can do on a basketball court that requires any degree of teamwork. It only requires 2 people to be on the same page unlike most offensive strategies that involve off ball screens and motions.

Good post and this our main problem in a nutshell.

Even with the injuries (if Herbert comes back at the end of the month), this team would be comfortably in the NCAA field by simply cutting out even 1/3 of the times they throw the ball away on a bad read for an easy layup at the other end.

I hope Kira returns for his junior year since, for all the commentators talking about his defense, reading the game offensively is where he likely stands to improve his draft stock the most.

I think that would probably be best for him long term. He will either be in college or the G-League next season. Going to the G-League isnt nearly as bad as it once was, but Kira is still like 90% potential. He has the game of a slashing 2 guard and the body of a point guard. Whether he can ever develop a better feel for this style of play is up in the air but he has total control over getting stronger and improving his outside shot, both of which would significantly improve his odds of becoming a viable NBA guard. It's just really unfortunate that the guy struggling the most to nail down the offense also happens to be the guy who has the most decisions to make.

Jared Butler is told he can't play for us because of a medical condition, he goes to a different school and now they're ranked number 1 in the country.

Anthony Grant gets fired from here, gets a different job and has that team ranked 4th in the country.

I'm starting to believe in this curse thing ya'll speak of.

Pretty sure Coleman was built on Chief Tuskaloosa’s grave.
