It’s what we got so we have to play them. If we had Rojas,Gary, and Quinerly then Herb wouldn’t be handling the ball and Galin wouldn’t even be playing IMO.

What are the positives we take from today? Our on ball/half court defense looked leaps and bounds better than what we saw in Atlantis. Rebounding wasn’t terrible for the most part either.

Effort and defense is really good. We just have no size and no depth.
Posted on 12/14/19 at 4:25 pm to Bryant91092
We turned it over a lot less only 10 turnovers today. We usually commit more than that in a half.
We also outrebounded them, and they are a good rebounding team

Played tough on the road vs an opponent who just upset Maryland. Decent half-court offense with flashes of uptempo. One more game toward never seeing Galin Smith again.

Yeah having an injured Herb who is so limited offensively (putting it nicely) be our lead guard on three straight possessions out of a timeout was baffling.
I think some of the logic behind it may have been that Herb would have the potential to drive to the basket and dish to an open shooter. Oats obviously wouldn't want Kira or whomever driving and dishing to an open Herb for three at that point of the game.
As far as the inbound with 5 seconds left - the ball was pretty clearly not intended to be inbounded to Reese. The play had absolutely no shot whatsoever of being successful once Reese caught the ball. He was on the perimeter being guarded by a much more athletic guy that Reese had no real height advantage on. Honestly, my biggest issue with it is that I don't think Reese really needed to be on the court for that play. Would have preferred for a quicker guy that at least had some slashing ability like Forbes considering it was a two point game.
Sucks we lost, because that a winnable game that would've looked great on the resume. But i'm leaving this game even more optimistic about the future. Tough road game against a very experienced team that should easily make the NCAAT. This will probably end up being Kira's worst game of the season. Petty was in foul trouble early and played less than 20 minutes. A few questionable calls that could have easily went our way and helped us out in that respect. Penn State had a dozen more free throw attempts than us, but we missed 6 of the 14 free throws we shot anyway.
Let's get back to .500 with a win at Samford on Wednesday.

We have a good coach with a short bench still working on best rotation. Our players are improving and learning a very new system. I understand the angst. I am perplexed by the anger and appalled at vitriolic personal attacks on the players and coaching. This is an open forum. What we scream at a TV set in our living room should be considered and amended before posting. I have behaved the same way, so I am not being holier than thou just requesting some deep breaths. depth
That's the main issue, we looked really tired the last 6 or 7 minutes.
Petty being in foul trouble all game didn't help.
Also we are so banged up that our team cant even all practice together, that's not helping.

Would be huge to get these next three going into conference play. I know Belmont and Richmond are decent but we do get them at home.

I disagree. We are a group of guys who've watched basketball games together and suffered for years. 99% of the guys in here aren't trolls, we just speak our minds and love Alabama basketball.

Probably a pretty unpopular opinion but Kira has not lived up to what he was suppose to be in any aspect of the game. Seems like every game there is a critical situation and he tries to drive to the basket and is either rejected, misses or turns the ball over

They shot twice as many free throws as we did and could bang inside, while we got whistled for breathing on them.

Kira is trying. He has little help that is playing at his level. In that aspect, he’s sort of like Colin and he’s trying to do too much. We are getting much closer to being a decent team. A few more bodies would be a godsend but that’s not happening so it is what it is. Keep on grinding fellas. I’m proud of the effort and disappointed in the outcome but we had a a chance. Vegas said we shouldn’t have as a double digit dog. Gotta take as much from the moral victory as we can.

I think that’s the problem is the assumption that he’s like Colin. He is not playing at a higher level then anyone else on the team.
Kira can not and has not shown the ability to create his own shot. I agree with you that as a team we are getting better but Kira is not.

I disagree, Kira played better last year with basically the same talent around him. His mind boggling turnovers are on him and no one else

Lewis had a bad day today, and for us to win he does need to play better than that. All in all he is playing good overall, statistically he is still a top 12 guard on the season so far.
He has only scored under 15 points twice this season, yes those two times have come in the last 4 games, but I think he gets it turned back around.
He has scored over 20 points in 5 of our 9 games. I think his defense has been improving lately too.

I dont know if any of ya'll play fantasy sports or not but I play college fantasy college basketball.
Lewis is the 12th best quard in the country fantasy wise, this takes into account the assists, rebounds, points, steals, turnovers ect.
Tyrese Haliburton who plays for Iowa State and went HAM vs us is statistically the best guard in the country so far this year. Fatts Russell who plays for Rhode Island and had a big game vs us is one of the best too.
I know that stats don't win games, just pointing out that statistically there aren't many guards having a better season than Kira is. He is just currently in a little slump.
ETA: Richmonds guard Jacob Gilyard is in the top 5 guards, we play them in a couple of weeks.

I also noticed from those fantasy numbers, Kira is averaging over 37 minutes a game. The kid is having to play a LOT of minutes so maybe we should cut him some slack. He’s probably exhausted. And don’t forget, he’s a sophomore but he really should be a freshman this year.
I know Kira isn’t playing stellar ball right now but there’s a lot of reasons why I believe that is the case and not a reflection on Kira. The fricking NCAA nazis really put us behind the 8 ball when they declared Q ineligible. It removed our only real alternative to Kira without a dropoff. So now he’s having to play basically the entire game without rest and he has to play whether he’s playing badly or well. So Nate doesn’t have the luxury of pulling him and sitting him. I really hope he comes back next year because with added depth I think he could develop into the better player we all think he can be and not have to play every minute of every game.

#9 nationally in minutes played per Kenpom

I am very pro Kira and like his game. So of course, a 'but' is coming... But this is misleading given both Kira's minutes played and Oats' pace/style of play.
Per KenPom Kira has had a slump v last season despite having only a modest uptick in per possession usage rate
-98 Off Rating compared to 108 last season
-reb%- Off 3.0% Def 11.8% which is slightly better than avg for PG
-Assist Rate 24.1: #235 Natl
-FTRate: 19.4 down from 31.7 last year
-3FG% 34% down from 35.8%
quote:
He’s probably exhausted.
This seems real and likely to be an even bigger deal in SEC Play

I love Kira but too many lazy passes and he dribbles himself into compromising positions too much where he is forced to make a bad pass.
He is probably very tired though but unfortunately we have no choice but to play him as much as we do.
