UAS says that UAT has 683 million of the total. UAB is 175. UAH is the remainder.

Doesn't Auburn have big research facilities in Mobile/Dauphin Island?

I believe so, AU, not AUM. I was trying to say AUM isnt a huge research institution compared to AU. Although AU is not a huge research institution in comparison to many schools

Alabama has them as well, but I don't know where that fits into the equation. Much like the intent of this thread. Does Texas include their land holdings for such a large endowment reported?

I'm sure they report revenue generated via land holdings. I know Cincinnati does. They generate a large amount of revenue off leasing that goes into the endowment. I would assume similar to most.

is that in terms of todays value. US Coal is a dying industry and just a small percentage of what it used to be even a short time ago

Coal is still the most common used source of fuel in the United States, especially for industrial purposes. I don't understand how people could have a problem with UA making money off of the reparations. I don't think the fallen soldiers would be offended if they did. I always knew UA got reparations, but I figured they had already sold it all. Why have they sat on so much cash for so long?

the government is trying to phase out coal via regulations that make it cost prohibitive. I think its 2015 that the next step of regulations that come into play that we will see even more of a down turn. That combined with natural gas and fracking have destroyed the coal economy compared to the past

The UA endowment is $986 million

UAT = 683 or 69.27 %
UAB = 175 or 17.75 %
UAH = 128 or 12.98 %

As for the conversion of coal land to endowment money the biggest issue is investing wisely so one times gains are not lost over time. The other issue is reclamation cost and damage to water tables vs sale proceeds. An individual or corporation may not face the same scrutiny as a state institution when it comes to regulation and post mine issues.

There's no reason to sell the land. Even as timberland you could make as much money off two cuts of timber - assuming it was well managed - as you would get from the land sales, generally speaking (assuming the land doesn't have commercial frontage).

The downvoting is pretty damn funny, particularly because whomeover it is is so determined about it.

Here's his picture, btw:

I just want the best for my Alma mater. I know coal is a soar subject but the potential that's left could benefit UA.

And damn the "down voter".
