Adding Petty and Sexton to this group of kids will definitely help.
Petty went for 36 last night in the State Semifinal against Sylacauga. 14-22 from the floor, 0-4 from 3, 8-11 FTs, 11 boards, 7 assists, and 1 block.

Agreed. If he had chosen to go D2 instead of walking on at Bama he would be all everything somewhere right now.

My biggest concern for next season and maybe one of y'all can talk me through it: one area where we REALLY improved this season was rebounding. And one of the biggest reasons for that improvement was Bola. Bola's gone. Is there someone to take up the slack or does rebounding become an Achilles heel again?

Everyone on the team is rebounding better. Bola is a beast on the boards, but when he's gone, his spot isn't going to be empty. Whoever is out there will get some rebounds too. My point is, if Hurts didn't get 12 carries a game, they'd go to a RB and we'd still get the yards.

And he half assed it most of the game. That Jemison team is so talented, its not even funny.
There was one play where Sylacauga shot an airball from 3. Petty caught the rebound with 1 hand, and threw it the length of the floor to a teammate in stride for a dunk. Petty never moved. But, when Petty wanted to play hard, he couldn't be stopped. I'm sure that is just him recognizing the talent gap between him and the other team. Just hope Avery can get him to go hard all the time. The kid is special as far as talent goes.

Robert Woodard, 6'6 220 SF from Columbus, MS was on an unofficial to Bama last night at the game. He's #38 in the country for 2018. Early Crystal Ball says Mississippi State but getting guys on campus is the first step.

This is why I hope we play a really good team in the 24 hour tipoff next season. Even if we lose, it'll get the young guys to understand this isn't going to be as easy as high school. Next year's team will not lack confidence like teams in the past.

I think having that early season marque matchup really gets players to focus more preparing for the season also. I'm glad we do it every year in football.

With 1 regular season game left, let's see where we stand in Year 2 compared to Year 1. KenPom is the best way to compare since it strips out competition.

Damn, if we just would have beat UGA and A&M we would probably be in or first 4 out right now.

My god, the improvement in rebounding is insane.

My hope is that the rebounding and defensive efficiency numbers stay close to the same or at least don't drop off too much and we can see solid improvement in the other numbers.

Tempo should skyrocket, hopefully turnovers and offensive efficiency get quite a bit a better.

Anyway of telling how young the roster will be next year relative to the rest of the country or is it too early for those types of rankings?

I'm really interested to see how Avery has us play next year. Does he go to the up tempo style he promised at the start or does he stick with this defensive style he decided on after he saw we didn't have the players to compete in a shootout?

Next year we will have the talent to score a lot, but are those guys going to hurt our defense? We might be best off next year trying to maintain that great defensive efficiency rank while adding in go to scorers like Sexton and Petty. On the other hand, I think young guys want to play for an offensive team. Long term we might be better off playing at a fast pace.

It's an interesting balance Avery will have to find.

I know Avery still has some things to prove, but a positive to look at is that we improved from year 1 to year 2 in things that require more effort. To play good defense and dominate the backboards, you have to play hard and not lose focus. Sounds repetitive and self explanatory, but we literally just don't have the play maker(s) to rely on to lead this offense. No matter how many high percentage shots they take, they just aren't good shooting the ball and lack the confidence.

I would hope he would want the offense to run more, but I would be a bit upset is the defense still isn't as active with their hands and as efficient as Avery's first two years. Conversely, I really don't want to see the same old half court sets with everyone standing around doing nothing. Avery said he wanted to implement a fast-pace offense, so if there isn't more creativity on driving the lanes, creating open jump shots, etc.. I'll be a bit upset.

Doubt we'll have the same offense that we see. The guys he has now just don't have a very high basketball IQ, so the playbook is limited.

Defensive numbers will drop by nature if we increase tempo.

Hard to compare to the rest of the country, but it should definitely be younger with Bola, Collins and Taylor's minutes mostly being replaced by true freshmen.

Per KenPom - 2017 Breakdown of Minutes per Class
FR - 28%
SO - 20%
JR - 22%
SR - 31%

Guess at next year

Key - 72%
Sexton - 65%
Ingram - 65%
Norris - 60%
Hall - 55%
Petty - 45%
Giddens - 35%
Davis - 35%
King - 35%
AJ Jr - 33%

That would give
FR - 22%
SO - 34%
JR - 18%
SR - 26%

So, not that much younger than this year all things considered. 2 of our 3 guys who play the most minutes are both freshmen this year (Key and Ingram), so we have quite a few upperclassmen that play, but they don't play nearly as many overall minutes as Key and Ingram.

Normal numbers like scoring allowed maybe, but the KenPom figures are tempo adjusted.

As far as rebounding goes- of course Bola is an elite rebounder, but up until the last few games it seemed like he was only getting like 10 minutes a game. I'm not sure how to check avg minutes per game, but that can't be too far off. Like someone said above, the whole team seems to have improved greatly rebounding. If we can keep that and add a couple scorers in Petty and Sexton who can, at minimum, hit WIDE arse OPEN threes, just imagine how good we'll be.

I dont think Norris sees that many minutes next year.I think they drop significantly.

He's still pretty good defensively tho so you never know. I guess it just depends on how good the new guys are on defense
