I agree changes need to be made with our hitting / philosophy , I am just saying that there are a lot programs out there who would love our success or lack there of according to some on here

I think something will change. The season is now over so I am willing to discuss some aspects of the game that needs upgrading.

Pitching, Hitting, & Speed

We really lacked in those areas this season but I think Pat Murphy stays as the coach though. I'm looking for in house changes and Murphy will have to get on the ball this off-season attacking his team weakness.

You know when too show up don't you. Since you dislike everything about our program then go find another one.

It's very simple...

Need a hitting coach who understands the analytics of todays game . Looking at games across the country , you see girls no bigger than most of our girls with 12-15 HRs … Murphy has a soft spot for slapper types but not many teams employ that now

I think Dowling will really pick it up next year

There have some strong consistencies in Murphy’s tenure. 1) We always have one bellcow pitcher that is elite. And Murphy overuses the hell out of them. The remaining pitchers are usually just decent P5 pitchers to fill a role and/or slot in the lineup to rest his bellcow. 2) He hardly ever has more than one or two hitters with any power. The top of the lineup is usually slap hitters with speed and good OBP to set the table for the cleanup girl. The bottom half of the lineup are usually easy outs and little offensive threat. 3) Defense is usually average to slightly above. Especially recently, Bama makes their fair share of errors. 4) Murphy is a very good recruiter BUT… the girl that lands on campus as a freshman is seldom very different from the one that graduates 4 years later. 5) As has been mentioned ad nauseum, our strength and conditioning appears to be failing our team as we always seem to have more than our fair share of overweight players.

This approach may have worked and worked well 10 years ago but it’s not cutting it anymore. Alabama and Florida used to be a cut above the rest of the SEC. Not anymore. We are still among the top teams but there’s nothing separating us from the other top 4-5 teams in the league. And as OOC play should show us, elite teams in other conferences like FSU, Oklahoma, and Stanford have passed us in many areas.

Oklahoma is the template for softball dominance and they do it differently. There is offensive ability up and down the lineup, with a good mixture of power and speed but most importantly, capable hitters with a good OBP and average in just about every spot. They often have an ace pitcher, like Montana, but they have girls to back them up too and can usually go 3 starters deep with very capable pitching.

Murphy is complacent, stubborn, and entrenched in yesterday’s game philosophy. I’m sure he’s not going anywhere but he needs to be made aware that his approach isn’t working flawlessly anymore and it’s time for changes and evolution or his seat will begin to heat up. If he refuses to see the light and evolve, he needs to be pressured to retire or it will be done for him. The end of this season should start the clock ticking and he should be told that in no uncertain terms. It’s time for change.

He should start by taking a real good look in the mirror. But he won't. Montana threw 403 pitches this weekend. That's criminal. But Murph hasn't brought in another elite pitcher since Lexi. Habetz should have been encouraged to take a head coaching job somewhere else years ago. She's who needs to go to make room for a real hitting coach.

LOL Murphy has already retired! He's just riding it out! We see it all the time in sports at every level. A coach has some success then settles back and milks it for all it's worth!

Bear88, Phil4bama, and you (RollTide33) are all right.

I think Greg Byrne will encourage Murphy to make some changes this off-season and the MAIN ASPECT that needs to change is the HITTING PHILOSOPHY or getting a HITTING COACH.

I agree with Bear when he spoke on Bailey Dowling shoot I think she has the potential to be the most feared player in the SEC.

We got work too do there's no if ands or buts about it. I hope these Freshman stick around and improve because I really like Barnhart, Bloodworth, Goodnight, Havelin, & Stephens. We got to keep them together.

I think watching Tow really not improve much hitting wise is a tell tell sign. Kilfoyl, Johnson, & Abby has those long weak swings so they must adjust this off-season to make them more compact.

We got to get some pitchers from the portal for sure.

I hope Fouts return because I hate for her to go out like that!

The offense is just inexcusable for a program that recruits at this level. They're currently LSU with Les Miles and have been for a while now. Bailey Hemphill covered for a whole hell of a lot for 4 years in the power and driving in runs area, and with her gone it was an absolute shite show.

Someone get Saban to talk to Murphy about adapting.

I don't think Saban would get along very well with Murph.

Heavy sigh. End of the season ‘rant’ before moving on to next year. Tough to see the team struggling so badly to even score a single run. That sinking feeling when the opponent scores 2 runs and deep down you know the game is over.

Still delirious from the heat today but trying to recall if I’ve ever seen an entire team, top to bottom collapse offensively like this one has. Setting coaching criticism aside (for arguments sake only), how does every player on a team, players who have played softball most all of their childhood and their young adult lives, regress to below the mean at the plate? Are they not capable of figuring something out on their own? There’s SEC caliber pitching on the team to practice against every day. Alabama should have every resource available to improve on any and every aspect of a sport that an athlete chooses to work on.

There was not a single player that could be counted on to get a hit this year. Inning after inning batters were sat down in order. A random hit seemed to often be followed by pop ups, ground outs or double plays to negate it.

What does softball practice entail if it doesn’t include batting practice? Are we not scouting other teams effectively? Are we not studying game film for areas to improve upon? Do we need to hire an analytics company to assess us as well as our opponents?

I just don’t get it. I suppose if there was an easy answer someone would have figured it out. With all the streaks and records that were broken this year, there will be a long 9 months to ponder the wasted opportunities and what might have been for Team 26.

Roll Tide anyway!

Not sure but I hope we are stressing launch angles and exit velo like most every school out there these days. Like I said , all across the country there are girls literally the size of Woodard with 10+ HRs. Some of the freshmen will progress I think but we need to recruit some hitters or get them from the portal for next year… we will have two good pitchers to build around

Adding this for completeness/closure so when archeologists unearth this board thousands of years from now folks will have the entire story of this season.

We do? I sincerely hope Montana comes back but I wouldn't blame her one bit if she decided to finish her career somewhere she will get run support and the coach won't try to permanently injure her. And has Lexi been healthy for more than a week at a time since she's been here?

If Fouts knows what is coming into the program and what is staying on the hitting side, she might decided to enter the portal to see if an OK or a UCLA comes calling.
