People keep saying that it's not worth a scholarship on a project. But I think that's dumb. Being able to develop a player within your system is advantageous. And freshmen won't win you rings. Otherwise Kentucky would have a shitload under Cal. There's also 13 scholarships. Most teams play 7-8 guys. What are you gonna do with the other 4 or 5?
I'm not going to say that we should never take a project, but I think spending more than one scholarship on a project is probably a mistake. It's not just the fact that you can find immediate contributors easily in the portal, but just as much the fact that if a player doesn't play their first year, they're one of the most popular defects during the portal season. You aren't really given the time to develop a project in today's portal world.

Most rotations aren't really set until later in the season. Certain players will not live up to the expectations and others may get hurt, so it's extremely helpful to have more players than you need that are ready to contribute. One reason that we were so good last year, was the fact that we could afford to switch rotations based on matchups and how players are performing at the time.

Watch 3 or more of them hit the portal? That's just the reality of CBB these days. If you have freshmen at the end of your bench odds are you won't have them back as sophomores. If you have sophomores at the end of your bench you will definitely not have them back as juniors. Player development is advantageous, but at this level most of that development is really just polishing up a few rough spots in a kid's game. The days of a raw athlete being developed into a well rounded basketball player over 3-4 years at one P-6 program are long gone.

JD just was surrounded with better pieces CC.
You saw it in the summer league games.
Didn't surprise me at all.

It was more than just better pieces. Because he often just looked lost and confused on the court. He's probably learned more about basketball strategy in the last couple of years than his entire life combined. The last year was the first time he's ever really played quality opponents. He kind of got screwed because of covid messing up AAU basketball. Which is probably the only quality competition he'd probably ever played. His increase in assists makes me think the game has slowed down for him. Though I would love to know how many turnovers per game he had.

Isn't Oats supposed to be 6'4"? If so, Wrightsell (listed at 6'3") actually appears to be a fraction of an inch taller than him. That's nice, at any rate.

Hope we can land him & Estrada soon!

NEWS: 2024 four-star point guard Labaron Philon has decommitted from Auburn.
Philon, one of the nation’s leading scorers this past HS season (34.7 PPG), is a top-40 recruit nationally and the No. 1 player in Alabama.

That didn't take long. Wonder what the story is there. You don't see flips very often in basketball recruiting.

Michigan, Syracuse, and Alabama will be in this weekend for prime target and Top-25 junior Donnie Freeman, he told @Stockrisers. Has taken visits to both Syracuse and Alabama. Very talented prospect. All three schools high on Freeman, obviously.

Wes Flanigan going to Ole Miss.

Presumably that'll be Philon's destination too then?

That's what Auburn fans think.

Too bad. Missing on Philon and Pate really hurts considering we are going to need 3+ guards for the 24-25 season. Maybe we can pull a rabbit out of the hat with Fland. There's always the portal too obviously.

Depending on shoes (and hair), I'd say he's closer to 6'3", or maybe just a smidge shorter.
For reference, here he is with Jaden Bradley, Shack, and JD, all of whom are listed as 6'3":

Nick Nurse and the Raptors just parted ways. Looks like we know who our 3rd assistant will be now.
