Gurley is a 2020-21 redshirt-junior/academic-senior. Tbh, I haven't been able to ascertain wheather 2020 academic seniors who've redshirted have to be counted toward 2021's total limit. Can't find a copy of the rule itself. We'll see.

I haven't read the actual rule itself so I don't know for sure either, but I don't see how the NCAA is going to allow anyone that has eligibility remaining to not be counted against the limit.

BREAKING: Top transfer target Earl Timberlake has committed to play for Penny Hardaway and Memphis, he tells ESPN.

Timberlake was a projected first-round pick before dealing with injuries all season.

This is a kid I really liked when we were recruiting him. Looks like we'll get to play against him next year.

It's amazing that kids still haven't realized that Penny is unqualified for his job and won't get them where they want to go.

My understanding was that essentially this season was counted as a 2nd redshirt year for all players and not counting against their individual eligibility.

Now as far as the total number allowed for each team, I'm not sure. That allowance may only apply to the seniors who are wanting to come back.

Yeah this season did not count against anyone's eligibility. What we don't know is whether Gurley is a counter. Seniors who elect to use the free year do not count against scholarship limits and its up to the individual schools whether to fund the extra scholarships beyond what the NCAA officially allows. Academically he was a senior. Athletically he was a junior. So the question is whether the NCAA bases class determinations on academic standing or athletic eligibility. If it's academic standing then Gurley won't be a counter and we could theoretically bring him in as a 14th scholarship player.

Hasn't it always been by athletic eligibility anytime anyone transfers? I guess it could be different this time since it is not a business as usual situation, but I would expect the NCAA to treat him like a typical grad transfer that has eligibility remaining and require that he count against the limit. Wouldn't really make sense from their perspective to do it any other way imo.

It's not his bday, he committed on his Birthday, Oct. 31st.

Yeah that is my hunch. Like I said earlier I think that rule was intended to give a guy like Reese who otherwise would not be able to play next year the option. Gurley would be able to play next year even if COVID had never been a thing.

However it may have been poorly written and there's a loophole, because as Surge has said if you don't count it based on academic standing we are waaaaay over the scholarship cap in football.

Ahh, I see. I knew I was missing something, but wasn't sure what it was. That makes a little more sense now.
