Haven’t kept up with Texas Tech’s roster this off-season but losing Shannon and MCCullar to the portal is really really bad for them(obviously). Idk what they have coming in to supplement those departures, but from the outside looking in they could really fall hard next season.
The articles and the smoke really makes me feel confident about the Bonnie. Curious about how we handle that last spot, more intriguing than stressful to me.

The most important spot is the second to last one (the one we’re trying to fill now). That last spot we can pretty much use for whatever. Instant impact, project, sit a year, whatever.

How much time, if any, is left for a 2023 recruit to reclassify and enroll? If that is still on the table I could see us trying to go that route.

I think there’s still time but idk how much

We've had good success going that route before. I'm all for it.

Peyton Watson, Jaden Hardy, JD Davison, Max Christie NOT expected to scrimmage. Had seemingly more to gain than lose here. Maybe promises have been made but highly unlikely this early.
There will be teams are who totally turned off by these decisions to not compete. Always are.
He might be the only one where that's good advice. He's not going #1, but as of now won't go any less than 5-6. The others it just seems dumb.

Man, who is JD getting advice from?
Scrimmage didn't have the right pieces around him to succeed IMHO IYAM. Once they do he'll play and show them all! You'll all see!

I think you're confusing him with Jaden Ivey.

Still waiting on an explanation of who these pieces are and how they will prevent church league turnovers with their mere presence.

I mean if he was on a team with 4 shooters he’d have driving lanes to maximize his skill set. The problem with that is he’s not good enough to demand an entire D1 or NBA roster is built and catered to his play style.
I believe he’s not playing in the scrimmage or coming back because he or his agent aren’t confident in his ability to raise his stock. They’re banking on his measurements and athleticism getting him drafted and taking it from there. If he shits the bed in a scrimmage more fears of his weaknesses become more apparent and his already low stock plummets further.

The bottom line is that JD has some explosive athletic traits - specifically explosive jumping ability. But his change of direction and quickness are just really average (if not below average). He just has an odd mis-match of athletic traits that don't really play well as a PG.
I hope he does great but I've never seen the whole "you just have to unlock his talent with all the athleticism" angle. At all. He can't stay in front of anyone on defense and struggles to explode past guys in the open floor or out front on offense. Those are BIG TIME red flags for a supposedly "uber athletic" guy.

This was something I don't think anyone expected to be an issue for him, but turned out to be a constant problem. He was constantly having his drives redirected or cut off and committed panic turnovers when he was forced to pick up his dribble in no man's land. He had even less first step burst than dudes like Releford and Obasohan who have never sniffed an NBA roster.

Exactly - I think most thought he'd be an explosive player (jumping, running, open floor, etc) who would have some struggles getting used to playing elite competition because of his high school career.
In no way did I expect him to only be able to get to the rim by bullying guys on his hip or in front of him. I mean, that Notre Dame game after JQ went out.......he tried his hardest to get a step on guys and get to the rim. He just couldn't.

Looking forward to the spicy hot takes if so.
Personally I think he and the Walters kid could play together, but if only one is a take I think Walters is a better fit. He's far more polished at this stage. Not as impressive of an athlete, but he's got a well rounded game.
I'm okay with not taking Cade Phillips, but from what I've seen on Sam Walters, he'd need to be one of, if not the, best shooters in the class for him to be a good take IMO. Looks very uncoordinated and incredibly unathletic for 6'8" (plays and moves more like a 7-footer). With that body type and lack of athleticism, he'll probably be destroyed on the defensive end. And in today's portal world, I think recruiting kids strictly for potential is becoming less and less smart. If we get him, I'll talk myself into him being a great addition, but he looks like a way less athletic and uncoordinated Noah Clowney (who could not get many minutes this year).

Agree to disagree on his athleticism. I don't think he's some big time athlete, but he's functional. He probably is one of the best shooters in the class though. Apparently makes about 40% from 3 on high volume.

He's also from The Villages, so I don't what kind of competition he typically plays against.

Pinson, a 6’2” senior averaged 9.8 points, 2.4 rebounds, and 4.8 assists last season. Great pickup for the Aggies.
