Council's 3pt shooting last season is kind of interesting and I think a bit of an outlier. He averaged 3.0 attempts per game (for reference Shack averaged 8.7 last year) but in the games he shot above his average he usually did terrible in. There are a handful of games where he went 1-7 or 1-6 and I think that tanked his percentages quite a bit. You would think with how good the rest of his offensive game is, particularly free throw shooting, we would see a jump in his shooting percentage next year.

Council's write up from The Athletic
quote:
16. Ricky Council | 6-6 wing | sophomore | Wichita State
Council is one of the most athletic players in the country and an AAC coach called him the best NBA prospect in that league this past season. He can fly in an open court and finish above the rim. He’s also got some shiftiness to him and can get his own shot off the bounce. He’s a little wild sometimes and takes some questionable shots, but when he’s on, he can really score. He averaged 12.0 points in 26.6 minutes per game in a Wichita State offense that was a train wreck this season. He’s a capable shooter, but that’s where he needs the most work. His mechanics are not consistent and he has some really bad misses. But plenty of coaches are going to look past that because of everything he can do athletically. He can defend, guard multiple positions, rebound and slash. It’s hard to find a wing with his size and explosiveness, and that’s why a lot of heavy hitters are going to be coming after him. Put him in a stable environment and get him to play within a structure and he might just hit big-time. The challenge on his end will be playing a smarter game.

We should give Yani Hufnagel a look.
Unless Bryan is willing to take a chance on a small program, he'll prob. wait. He's really loyal to Nate for good reason.

Did he play for us last year?

Oh well.
Just kidding. I'd be fine with bringing him in. Might would rather get Jones if I had my choice between the two though.

Good news on Council - Kansas is pushing hard for Kevin McCullar from Texas Tech (along with Gonzaga), who is a 6'6 wing, so I'd imagine as of now Council isn't a take at Kansas.
So not a take at Kansas and not currently any room at Arkansas means in reality it's down to us, Miss St, Georgia Tech and Iowa St.

I'm fine with a little bit of a raw offensive game if that means some questionable shots, especially if it's combined with great defense, rebounding and athleticism.
The problem last year was questionable offense and turnovers and terrible defense from a handful of guys.

He'd be solid I just haven't really considered that he'd actually come here I guess.

He was a rising star before he got hit with sexual harassment

Yea. No clue on him yet. Just know he's originally from Texas.
Didn't know about the harassment.

This just backs up my Keon Ellis/Tony Mitchell mashup opinion of him.

Great point, it's okay if they have a weakness but provide production in other ways but last year was almost a perfect storm of just mass chaos.

Yep - a raw offensive player is ok if they can get hot sometimes, pick their spots, don't have live ball turnovers and are effective rebounding and defensively.
When your only positive is supposedly offense like we had a lot of last year you better be damn good at it.

Yeah exactly. If our big issue on offense last season was just taking too many ill-advised shots we would have been a much better team than we were. Bad shots sometimes go in or result in offensive rebounds. Turnovers are by their very nature empty possessions.

And so many of ours were live ball by guards that they both had a 0% chance of us scoring and 90% of the opponent scoring. They were essentially pick 6s.
3-4 of those a game make it almost impossible to win unless you have a huge shooting night. Of all our issues last year that was the defining factor.

I want that Jones dude. He was Very good against us

I'd be happy with him or Council. They're very different players, but they both bring some things to the table that our returning players don't really have a proven track record of. Jones' outside shooting and Council's transition finishing in particular.
