The chat has been ridiculous today. Bediako is a 5-Star and some of you are questioning if it’s a good signing? Are you serious? Lol, are you trolling or what? It’s a fantastic pick up, and you should be very happy that he’s all Bama. He’ll be a stud. We’ve had Alex Reese, James Rojas, and Galin Smith the last 2 years. How is Bediako not good enough?

I think he is a great long term signing. I just don’t think it’s fair to him to place these expectations on him for year 1. I think he needs a year to develop his offensive game more. I do think he contributes year 1 defensively and rebounding...which is plenty good enough for a true freshman. I expect him to be 3rd option behind Tchikou and Langston Wilson.

Though I do agree He is definitely an upgrade over those guys you listed

It's almost as ridiculous as praying the future SEC POY and DPOY would transfer because he's f***ing terrible...

FWIW, you could only argue that one person doesn't think it's a good signing, and he's even said he likes the signing long term. You of all people shouldn't be acting like the groupthink police...

Apparently Musselman, the Arkansas basketball program and a bunch of their fans chipped in a bunch of money and purchased a floral arrangement for Luke’s funeral and included enough overage in the payment to cover all the flowers for the service.

No kidding. He made it pretty clear that he viewed it as a "bad" signing only in the sense that he'd have just rather gone the transfer route and gotten a plug and play guy who doesn't need any development for next season. I just don't want what happened to Petty to happen to Bediako, where people set expectations so high that he's not going to be able to meet them and then those same people hold that fact against him for 4 years. "Why ain't he a lottery pick after 2 whole years?!? Must be because he's lazy and ain't practicin hard enuf! FUNDAMENTALS! RUN DA BAWL!"

I have added what we know (or at least what we think we know) about the 2021 schedule to the OP. If you see something incorrect or missing, please let me know.

Looking at 247, JD Davison is the third highest ranked recruit we've ever signed. (I think this only goes back to around 2003)

Charles Bediako is sixth.

1.Collin Sexton
2. Richard Hendrix
3. JD Davison
4. JaMychal Green
5. Devonta Pollard
6. Charles Bediako
7. John Petty
8. Levi Randolph
9. Alonzo Gee
10. Kira Lewis

I haven't seen anything yet on when Bediako is supposed to actually sign.

where does the player from Childersburg fall in the top 10 at Bama. He was a 5 start that left after one year of MG and had a good career in the pros.

i am forgetting his name though.

Gerald Wallace!

Other than me, he's the most successful person ever from Childersburg.

Gerald Wallace?

ETA: he was before 2003, so he doesn't make the cut from a 247 perspective.

Will be interesting to see what, if any, intel leaks today on Burnett. They do CBs for the portal too now don't they?

This Bediako argument is kind of ridiculous, but both camps are probably right. Look at Kentucky (aside from last year). Every year they bring in a haul of elite guys, and every year they look pedestrian until January/February when they have had time to adjust to the college game and start hitting their stride. Bediako certainly won't be an NBA 5 guy in November, but he sure as hell could be playing a significant role by March.

I believe I'll be purchasing season tickets for the first time as an adult.

The insane number of guys in the transfer portal is going to open up a whole new category of recruiting second guessing.

We've seen it in here with Bediako, but if Wilson struggles next year then it's easy to go straight from there to "we should have used that scholarship on one of the transfer portal guys" instead of a junior college project.

I'm high on Wilson's potential, so I'm not trying to will that negativity into existence

Musselman has sort of built his recruiting strategy on exploiting what was kind of an inefficiency. I'm guessing his theory is: a) it's hard to evaluate how well most recruits will transition from high school (or juco) to college basketball, so b) why not just try to find guys who have already proven they produce at this level?

It's a tough balancing act between finding short-term help and building long-term with 3 or 4 year players. Especially this year.

Ideally I think you want about a 50/50 split between one and dones/JuCos/transfers and the kind of high school kids who will be 3-4 year college players. The latter are the backbone of practically every elite program in the country besides Kentucky and, to a lesser extent, Duke. If that's all you recruit in the era of the portal you're going to quickly find yourself with a roster full of young, developmental players or be perpetually shorthanded because of unused scholarships. To get old and stay old you have to supplement your roster with JuCos and transfers.
