I think there's enough room for another guy with starter minutes and maybe a role player.

For the freshmen, outside of Bradley and Miller, I don't think you can count on many minutes right now. Bediako was a borderline 5-star player and only averaged 17.8 minutes last season. I'm not expecting much out of Clowney and Pringle their first season, sometimes it takes big guys longer to develop anyways. Gurley is also in line to clean up most of those remaining minutes, I think he's going to be the backup 4 and 5, so he's going to get his playing time regardless. Griffen even said in his recent interview that he wasn't expecting much time and is focused on bulking up, it would be great if he can carve out a role.

JQ coming back could throw a wrench in things but we have no idea how he's going to play. He can exceed expectations and pick up where he left off or he could play two games and have another injury and decide to shut it down. You can't really rely on him at the moment.

Sears, Bradley, Burnett, Miller, Miles, Gurley, and Bediako are the only ones that should command minutes and most of them can play multiple positions. We need another wing that can take minutes IMO and then the last roster spot can go to a Guard (hello Lucas).

You mean with our remaining scholarships? Because I'm not even convinced we can handle 1 more guy looking for 25+mpg. Top 50 recruits and JuCo transfers expect to play. Burnett, Sears, Bediako, and Gurley all expect to play a lot of minutes next season. That's 9 guys, which is basically the most you can realistically play. Then you have to account for the possibility of Quinerly coming back sometime during conference play. Unless a couple of guys like Griffen and Clowney are on board with the idea of playing limited minutes as freshmen while they bulk up and develop some aspects of their games, we're already dealing with a bit of a minutes logjam.

I don't personally worry too much about the minutes expectations from guys like Pringle and Gurley. If Pringle isn't ready to play, then he sits. If that leads him to transferring in the summer, so be it. If Gurley gets beaten out by somebody like Pringle or Clowney, then he sits. I can't imagine we promised Gurley anything for next year.

But yes, we certainly do have a fair amount of guys that probably expect to play.

Yea it's a perfect replacement, and quite possibly an upgrade.

Lucas is such a consistent shooter that I think he's basically Alabama basketball curse resistant (if you believe in that sort of stuff, in which case I've probably jinxed him).

In 2020-2021, he attempted 6 3s per game and made 2.3, 38.9%.
In 2021-2022, he attempted 6.1 3s per game and made 2.4, 38.6%.

It's really remarkable consistency.

Throw in the fact that he's an 88% FT shooter over his career, and you just have an absolute natural shooter.

Maybe. He's more of a 38-40% 3pt guy than a 34-36% 3pt guy like Shack, and on a pretty high volume. He's also one of the best FT shooters in the entire country, whereas Shack was reliable but not automatic. Not as exciting of a target as a guy like Reeves who can blow up and drop 20 in a half, but there's also less risk that he won't be able to thrive off ball.

Pringle is the rare basketball JuCo transfer with some D-1 experience so I'd be pretty disappointed if he ends up being another KAH or Tchikou who plays 0 meaningful minutes all season. Even if he does, what you're proposing here is still a 9 man rotation without accounting for the wild card that is JQ. It is likely that we lose at least one guy to a serious injury before the season even begins because this is Alabama basketball where we can't have nice things though. In any event, I just want to avoid another situation like this past season where we are trying to play 10 guys and it ends up resulting in countless lineup combinations, most of which don't work.

Athletic - Kentucky hot after Schierman

quote:

Kentucky has been mighty quiet in the transfer portal so far this spring — after adding the national player of the year, SEC assist leader and the league’s most accurate 3-point shooter from the portal last year — but now things are heating up. The Wildcats could be on the verge of making a huge splash. They’ve reached out to and should be very much in the mix for South Dakota State star Baylor Scheierman, the Summit League Player of the Year and No. 3 on The Athletic’s rank of best available players. He is the best fit for Kentucky’s specific needs as John Calipari searches for scoring and shooting on the wing to solidify the Cats as title contenders.

News broke of Scheierman’s plans to enter the portal late Monday afternoon, Kentucky assistant Orlando Antigua evaluated his film on Tuesday morning and before lunchtime was on the phone with Scheierman’s agent.

“That moved real quick,” agent Austin Walton said. “We have a high level of interest and I think the interest is mutual. The exposure of Kentucky basketball and the tradition there is something that appeals to Baylor. Their history of development and draft picks is something that’s very enticing for Baylor. It’s a lot of what we’re looking for.”

Scheierman has entered the NBA Draft while maintaining his collegiate eligibility, allowing him to either stay in the draft and pursue professional basketball now, or return to school and then jump to a high major.

quote:

Duke, Kansas, Gonzaga, Arizona, UCLA, Florida, Baylor, Texas, Memphis, Alabama, Louisville and Michigan State have shown serious interest, Walton said. “It’s everyone. Everyone wants this kid.”

quote:

That could mean a detour to Atlanta, where Scheierman is training at Overtime Elite, to make their pitch in the next two days. “This is going to move fast,” Walton said. More than 30 schools reached out in the first 18 hours, but Scheierman plans to cut his list to 10 or fewer by Wednesday. It is likely Kentucky will make that cut.

“He wants to play for a winner. He wants the big stage. He wants the exposure,” Walton said. “He wants someone who is going to coach him hard and develop him to become an NBA player, whether that’s this year or next year. He wants to play with other really good players, because that unlocks him. He wants to showcase his versatility, show exactly who he is and a place that is going to allow him to be Baylor.”

quote:

"But at the end of the day, it has to be the right fit for him. He needs to know how you’re going to use him, how serious you are about him, what you’re going to do when he gets there, how you’re going to develop him"

Jmo, but I think Pringle will definitely be in the rotation.

You don't bring JuCo guys in to sit.

This is partly why I don't worry about it much. I wouldn't even completely rule out a transfer (Miles?) or a completely out of nowhere draft/G-league decision (Bediako?), although those would presumably have to happen relatively soon.

(I'm not predicting those things, to be clear).

Throw in injuries and guys that were less ready to play than we imagined, and all of a sudden you're definitely not worried about having too many guys.

If Schierman wants to come, you figure it out. Even if we add Lucas.

Even in 2022, it seems so weird to have an agent talking about a kid's transfer options.

We will definitely get the Duke treatment and be penciled in to play what amounts to a home game in the first two rounds regardless of how the rest of the bracket shakes out right?

Over the last 20 NCAA tournaments they have participated in, Duke has played their first/second round games outside the states of North Carolina and South Carolina 7 times and at a site outside of the Eastern time zone once.
