hopefully this no.3 overall class can live up to its billing
Our season is likely to go as our freshmen + Pringle go. If most or all of them they show up ready to play we will be pretty good. If only one or two of them do we will be pretty thin.

Of all the random guys in the portal, this one feels like one where - if we decide we want to - we should have a very good in as we run exactly the style that matches his skillset. He's also seen it up close and personal back in November (and we ran it really well that night).
We have two guaranteed openings, options are ever dwindling, and there hasn't been a more perfect match in terms of need and scheme fit that has appeared in the portal thus far. If we don't at least reach out, I'll be pissed

Agreed. We need Rylen Griffen to be ready to roll.

Lucas would be a take for me. I like him alot

A guy who has proved to be a more than capable shooter at the high major level would be a really nice grab for one of the guys off the bench.

South Dakota State’s Baylor Scheierman told me his goal is to stay in the NBA Draft, but is also going to explore a transfer in case he decides to go that route.
Like George mentioned, he'll get a lot of blue blood attention but he actually looks like a great and ideal fit in this system. Coming here and playing in a similar scheme but going against better talent will be pretty beneficial for his draft prospects. Hopefully, we make the cut.

Would be a big pickup. Good shooter who doesn't need much space to get a shot off and can play on ball if necessary.

Yeah, I'd feel pretty good if at least one of the last two spots went to a proven shooter, especially from a power conference. Of course, you want ideal measurables, defensive ability, etc. but this roster is really missing a knockdown shooter.

Some of the dudes who are now popping up (and will still) in the transfer portal are great examples of why it's wise to exercise a little patience with your team's approach to transfers. Strike too soon on iffy options and you might miss out on a game-changer.
Good point by Kyle Tucker.

It really does make a whole lot of sense for him. Perfect scheme, good team, all the opportunity in the world to consistently compete against elite opposition.
As noted above though, this also definitely feels like one that might get Duke involved.

Rylan Griffen Exclusive Interview
Rylan Griffen is one of 5 signees from Alabama’s 3rd ranked recruiting class for 2022, per 247 Sports. Griffen is an upcoming freshman from Richardson, Texas who is ranked no. 49 in the 247sports Composite Rankings for the class of 2022. He is a 6’5” shooting guard who had a huge senior season to improve his ranking. Griffen sat down with us for an exclusive interview this past weekend.
When do you come to campus and get started for the offseason and workouts and all?
“I think I get there later than everyone else since my graduation is late, but it should be late may when I actually come for school.”
What are the biggest areas you are hoping to grow in the offseason?
“My strength mainly. I’m working right now in the weight room, but I know I’ll have to put on weight. I feel like I need to do that to play my best and that’s what I’m working on the most right now so pretty much getting stronger and healthier”
A lot of talk among the Alabama fan base as the season has ended has been around how new this roster will look. Have you been in communication with any new guys? Are there any guys being recruited from the portal/HS ranks that you have been in communication with to recruit to play with you?
“Yeah, I really just talk to the people going there already. I try to get to know these guys since I’m going to spend most of my year next year with them. They are all real cool. They’re all some dogs so we have that in common. We are like minded. And I’m not really a recruiter so I don't recruit anyone. I leave that to the coaches but hopefully whoever they get is a dog like the rest of us.”
What are some of the things you are going to bring to the table in year 1 next year? What expectations can Alabama fans have for you personally heading into the season?
“I’m going to bring toughness. My dad made me earn everything and I want to bring that mentality to the team. I want to bring energy too. Just things I didn't see this season is what I'm going to try to bring next season. I don’t want any teams to have easy wins on us I want to make them earn it just like we will earn our wins.”
What are your thoughts on what worked well and what didn’t this past year for Alabama? What expectations can fans have for the team as a whole (knowing the roster isn’t finished quite yet)?
“I feel like it worked well when they were playing hard. Sometimes it didn’t look like that. I think fans can expect that the team gone play harder because there’s a lot of talent and if you are not playing hard, I'm sure you will come out. So, you can expect we will play hard”
I know in recruiting the staff compares the recruit’s game to other players. Did they do that for you? If so, who was the player they compared you to? Is there a player you compare yourself to/model your game after?
“Yeah, they did two of them, one in program, one in NBA. For the program they compared me to John Petty and Josh Primo. They think I have that type of potential. It’s going to be hard to fill shoes as big as those, but they see that type of potential and I'm going to work as hard as I can to be considered on the level of one of those guys. As for the NBA they used Devin Booker. I watch Booker a lot. He is just fun to watch and makes it look so easy. I try to play like him, and I know I have a long way to go in order to do that, but they said they will try to help me do that.”
What is a personal goal for yourself this season? What is a goal of yours for the team this season?
“My goal is just to get on the court. Not many freshmen play at this high a level so it would be great to get any time. I'm going to have to earn it and I think I'm ready to do that.
Season goals I just want to get the SEC Championship back to our school. The football team will probably win the National Championship, so we must back them up and be really good too. When I talked to Nick Saban that’s what he was saying. He said you come here to be a champion and that’s what I want to do and that’s the standard I want for myself and my team.”
Griffen, in my opinion, is a perfect fit as a shooting guard for what Coach Oats likes to do. Griffen can score at all levels, is great in transition, and someone who is going to play hard any time he gets the opportunity. He is bringing a great mentality into his freshman year to work hard, earn whatever time he gets, and capitalize on it. He mentions getting stronger as one of the main things he is working on. To me, this is a key part of his development and unlocking the potential he has on both ends. Offensively, like I mentioned, he can score at all levels already. As he adds weight, he will only improve as a finisher when playing against the physicality of the SEC. Defensively, it will make him more versatile to guard stronger guards and wings with his length and athleticism. Griffen has an opportunity to be similar to John Petty and Josh Primo, like the staff has compared him to, as one of the next high level shooting guards who can be high impact players on both ends for Nate Oats. Griffen is one of many reasons to be excited for this coming year.

I haven't dug around too much but I think Duke and Gonzaga would be our primary concerns, both have multiple roster spots available and they need wings.
If we do have anything going for us, he's actually seen our system on the court and we had a great night offensively.
It'll be interesting to watch, I hope we can make the cut for a visit.

Great interview. I hope he finds some minutes this coming year but once he puts on a bit more weight, he should be a force offensively. Loved his attitude.

Griffen is a huge wildcard in this class. Sky is the limit with his abilities.

He really is but I also will say Noah Clowney is as well.

They are both gonna need to be contributors at this point. They are getting at least Holt's and Gary's minutes unless we add another legit baller or two.
