Our bigs are as big of a problem as anything, probably more

Oh, I completely agree. Especially if Gurley and Bediako can't hit threes, there's no much benefit since we don't use a traditional post on offense.

I actually like Bediako but he's not being used to his strengths enough. I believe Alex was intended to kind of be the 5 Nate wants but we know how that went. I like Gurley as a person, but not sure he's going to be the outside threat or have the quickness and defense we need. I like Gary too but he's just limited. Miles is not an inside player. Here's hoping we pick up some help or the freshmen can do something.

I think all of our coaches have had the same problem and thats having one real shooter. Not a streaky shooter but a consistent guy who does nothing but shoot. They all have choose athleticism over shooting.

Will LSU be fielding a varsity team this year? Looks like Asst Coaches and team managers may be suiting up for some games.

If JQ and Shack were to return, I hope it's very soon.

It's worth mentioning that we have already seen a team with Shack / JQ playing significant minutes win the SEC and get a #2 seed.

While Herb was just on a completely different level defensively you don't replace, that they always had at least 3 and usually 4 very solid to great defenders on the court with them was just as important.

You guys are lot more well researched on the defensive strengths of all the possible transfers and freshmen than me.

However, if JQ and Shack both came back and rotations were to look like season before last -- limited time when both play together and without JD being a third guard that's a minus defender -- it may start to look like a potential Final Four roster one more than banking completely on newcomers.

Top 30 Overall Transfers per Miya

Not sure how Miya comes up with this, but to have Curbelo and Toussaint higher than Sears is somewhat laughable. I guess it's the overrated Big 10 again?

They could not shoot or rebound, and were not good on defense either.
A lot of this is because our guards couldn't stay in front of anyone on defense. When JD, JQ, and Shackelford are out there doing their turnstile act on defense, it requires the bigs to leave their guy and guard the penetrator, which generally leads to one of three things:
1. A pass to the vacated offensive player and an easy attempt at the rim.
2. A foul on the guard taking the ball to the rim.
3. A missed shot by the guard trying to score over a post defender, which is then rebounded by the vacated offensive player at the rim for a putback.

When it came to 1-on-1 defense our bigs were actually pretty competent, and improved throughout the season.

But other than maybe Burnett, who would those other very solid defenders be for next season? Like you said, there's no Herb. No Petty, No Keon. If Q and Shack come back, it's to start and play significant minutes and that's 2 poor guard defenders out there together.

The biggest reason is that his metrics see Toussaint and Curbelo as much better defenders than Sears. Are they? I have no idea.

Miya Point Guard Rankings - Offense
1. Nijel Pack (KSU) (30.0)
2. Jaelin Llewellyn (Princeton) (27.9)
3. Mark Sears (Ohio) (25.6)
8. Joe Toussaint (Iowa) (21.7)
9. Andre Curbelo (Illinois) (21.2)

Miya Point Guard Rankings - Defense
1. Eric Gaines (LSU) (27.7)
2. Xavier Pinson (LSU) (16.3)
3. Andre Curbelo (Illinois) (14.2)
4. Joe Toussaint (Iowa) (12.6)
66. Jaelin Llewellyn (Princeton) (0.9)
75. Mark Sears (Ohio) (0.2)

I agree it's the biggest reason. I didn't really have a problem with our big's defense. For my part, I was referring more to the offensive aspect of the bigs and their usage.

It's all opponent adjusted, and Sears didn't have great numbers against good teams last year, so that probably has something to do with it. And the biggest reason is that his metrics see Toussaint and Curbelo as much better defenders than Sears

Makes sense. For me, after watching several games, I'm doing what I can to pull Pack. If not him, then Sears. Jaelin might be fine. Just hard for me to get a good read on him.

It's possible for JQ/Shack to get 28 or so minutes and not be played together more than they were in 2020-21. It's not that they never played together then.

If Burnett is the only good defender we have in the guard/wing rotation, we may need to be focusing on the best defending transfers regardless of whether JQ and/or Shack return.

I'm sure both Shack and JQ would rank pretty high offensively compared to all the guys transferring.

Does Bradley seem like a decent defender? Miller at the 4? These guys are certainly going to be getting a lot of minutes.

Yes. Of the 4 high school recruits I'd say he is the most likely to be a better than average defender as a freshman.

Thats a big part of what I've been asking for. All accounts are that Bradley is a good defender. Miller not sure but there again they are freshmen.

Looks like Slater thinks Eric Gaines is headed to UAB. Good for Andy Kennedy, always liked him.

I hope Colby Jones hits the portal. That's a guy that will bring you energy and hustle! I think buddy on Twitter forecasting that with Jones & Sears in Tuscaloosa.

Well he wondered how many games they could win.

Miller can defend but ask him to defend a four right now wouldn't be a good idea. He has to put on some weight!
