You think Shack comes back for another season? If he does I'd say that's all accurate. I personally don't expect him back though. It's not like he's going to grow 3 inches or magically develop an NBA level handle over the next 7 months.

I'm fine with him coming back as long as he has accepted the role he is best suited for. If he's coming back to try to prove he can be a NBA level PG then he can hit the portal or overseas.

So Miller shot 25% from the field and had 4 fouls in 17 minutes.
He should fit right in!

I don’t look too much into All-American game statlines. I watched the game and they weren’t playing full speed/max effort. Was like the NBA All-Star game with a little more effort than that. Miller was one of the few that actually seemed like he wanted to play defense, block shots, pass the ball, etc. Everyone else wanted to show out. None of the shots he took were bad. Form didn’t look bad either. The shots just didn’t fall. He’s gonna be a very good player. Like someone else said earlier, he looked like he belonged in that game.

Is it certain that Gurley’s spot doesn’t count?

Blue italics are guys we've publicly been tied to already. The rest are guys who fit criteria of what we generally look for in players.
D-PRPG = Defensive Rating incorporating opponent strength
- 3.0 or better is very good
- 1.5 or worse is very bad

I wouldn't have complaints about him coming back but this is the concern that would be in the back of my mind.

That looks good. If I could get greedy, I would want to find a utility wing that has multiple years of eligibility left. Miller is probably a one-and-done and Miles will be a Senior after next season. Having some decent long-term depth there would be nice.

Did anyone have an issue with Shack's play this year? I didn't. I can't believe people are on the fence about wanting him back.

Yea I'd love to have Shack back, especially with what is (hopefully) a more complimentary lineup around him on both ends of the floor.
No clue what he is thinking, though.

No. But our shite tier defense gave him far fewer opportunities to do the one thing that would result in a missed shot or turnover in 3 on 1 transition situations. He's a good secondary scoring option and I'd be happy to have him back if we have a dude on the team next year who can put the team on his back in crunch time.

Yep - his deficiencies were magnified big time this year whereas they were covered up very well the year before.
I think he's become a better defender (not great, but better than his first 2 years) and gotten better at finishing at the rim (again, not great, but better). If the 2022-23 roster is better at the things we were terrible at this year, it seems like a good situation for him to be able to be more consistent.

I don’t get the transfer portal. I played 13 years in 8 different countries and for 16 head coaches. Only once was it my call to leave a club that could keep me. Continuity and consistency is critical to player development and your legacy. The grass grows where you water it.

See I'd say it was just the opposite. Shack's biggest weaknesses as a player to me are a lack of athleticism and a lack of playmaking ability, which was really on display last year because of all the transition opportunities he got and fricked up by having neither the ability to score over a defender or the court vision to force the defender to commit to him before passing to a wide open teammate. This year we created fewer turnovers and even when we did JD was usually the one giving it right back on the other end. As a % of his total shots Shack seemed to do more spot up 3pt shooting this year, which is what he is best at.

I think there are definitely kids who hit the portal because they're lazy and immature, and they would rather find a place where the coaches are less demanding than simply taking the time to work on self-improvement. I don't think that's even close to the majority though. Most of them are either not getting any playing time, had their coach leave/get fired, run off by the coaching staff, or looking to parlay their success at a small school into a spot at a bigger program and the increased exposure that comes with it. All of those are very understandable reasons to transfer.

I bet being in the portal for a player is nerve-wracking. There's no guarantees.
