I couldn't find anything mentioning them being related when I searched a month or two ago.

KAH is gonna surprise some people next year. Oats must like what he sees if he is comparing him to Gary. If KAH is getting offensive rebounds, that's a great sign. He's got good leaping ability so if he can play with a high intensity level he can give us some good minutes.

Kinda wish the report on Miles was a little more positive.

I worry about Vandy more than anyone. Those bastards. I remember Eddie Fogler.

It’s funny how we can all interpret things differently. I thought the comment on Miles was extremely positive and boded well for what he’s going to do this year.

Me too. Miles was a project and it sounds like he's coming along fine. The season doesn't start next week. He's still got a few months of work to put in between now and the opener. If Oats is still saying that about him this time year then it's cause for concern.

High hopes for Miles here too.

Can't wait to see the finalized schedule in a few weeks.

Nate Oats takes his Alabama team on a retreat: No phones, no basketballs and lots of mud

Expectations are again high for the Alabama men’s basketball team, but coach Nate Oats may look back and say the Crimson Tide began their NCAA Tournament push by being stuck in the mud.

For the second time in three years, Oats took his team on a preseason retreat to get away from basketball and build relationships.

The event a year ago was canceled by COVID-19, but last weekend, a group of 30 players and administrators found themselves at the Soggy Bottom Lodge in Marengo County. The lodge is an upscale hunting camp that hosts large group retreats.

“It was good,” Oats told the Tuscaloosa News. “We had always done something every year at Buffalo and my first year here.

“The only basketball we took was the one we autographed and gave to the Soggy Bottom staff for taking care of us. They were great. But we sort of managed what we wanted to do ourselves once we were there. Mike Snowden (Alabama’s strength and conditioning coach for basketball) was in the Navy , so he knows what to do. No phones, took them away as soon as we got there, get them up at 5 a.m., do some running, some obstacle course, a lot of team activities. We all slept in a big house with a bunk room. So there was a lot of bonding. We said we were on a No BCD policy: No Blaming, No Complaining, No Defending. And we didn’t have any of that. And when you are crawling through the mud, trying to get your team to win a race, it doesn’t matter what your NIL deal is.”

Oats said the retreat also gave guard Jaden Shackelford, who spent the summer considering a pro career or transfer, time to work with his younger teammates.

“I thought Shack did a really good job of assimilating himself after being at home in California most of the summer,” Oats said. “He showed a lot of leadership. You don’t just come in after not going through summer workouts and start acting like you own the team and Shack didn’t do that. But he also carried himself like a veteran.”

Five-star freshman J.D. Davison also “really opened up” over the three-day retreat.

”He’s a quiet kid, really very humble,” Oats said. “But when you are down in the mud with your brothers, you form a bond. He really did a good job of that. All the new guys did.”

The rural surroundings didn’t overwhelm any players unaccustomed to the South, Oats said.

“There was maybe a little of that with Nimari (Burnett) because he’s from Chicago. But he was in Lubbock (playing one semester at Texas Tech) so it’s not like he’s been his whole life without seeing a deer. Most of our other guys, even the Canadians, have played in Florida like (freshman center Charles) Bediako. So it wasn’t a big culture shock. Plus, it’s not like we were in some mud cabin. The place is really nice. We got to watch a little television, too, and got to see all three of our guys in rookie league (Herb Jones and Kira Lewis with the Pelicans, Josh Primo with the Spurs) which was some motivation for everybody.”

One player who was unable to participate in some of the more physical drills was forward James Rojas. The senior forward had surgery for a torn ACL in June and is in the early stages of rehab on the knee.

”Obviously, James was limited but he was very vocal,” Oats said. “Plus he was our cornhole champion by a mile. I asked him, ‘James, where did you learn to throw a bag like that?' and he said, ‘Coach, I went in junior college in Kansas. Not much else to do out there.’”

With school starting, Alabama will be limited in its practice time with most of September devoted to skills instruction. The season opens in November with Alabama scheduled to face three of the 2021 Final Four teams (Gonzaga, Houston and Baylor) in the non-conference portion of its schedule.

Rojas's Kansas/bag quote is pretty funny too. Hope he's progressing.

I have to say, the fact that Oats is able to pull off blending a modern, NBA style of play with an old-school attitude is one of the most impressive things about him as a coach.

Let’s dive in.

Miles is the best player on the court at times. That is, when Ellis isn’t. Both were absolutely on fire during the session. Ellis is a sure fire NBA draft pick.

Bediako is dominating down low. Dude has unreal hands and the pick and roll with him and JQ was something to see. He’s a future pro player no doubt and was first in line at every drill at team camp. Coaches love him.

Alex T is still behind, was really dissappointed seeing where he was at. Hopefully it will all click soon. Injury is still an issue.

JD being JD. Hurt his hand last week dunking too hard…that’s hilarious to me. Dunking too hard. Hands down the best passer on the team. Threw a behind the back pass from almost below the goal to a shooter on the wing. Was legit one of the better passes I have seen in years.

JQ has picked right back up where he left off, I dare you to try and guard him.

Big things coming fam.

He oozes potential, however it’s almost like a folk legend. He does something good and your like “there he is”, then the next 3 plays your kinda scratching your head wondering where that guy just was.

Gurley fits this system perfectly. He weirdly may lead us in minutes based on all the things he can do. Just very consistent. Not a super high ceiling IMO, but just a great college player. Not sure if he is a pro or not tbh.

Burnett wasn’t there the first part, was getting tapped up or doing something with the trainer. Has a great shot but it wasn’t falling while I was there. Great on ball defender and makes his presence known on the court. When his shot is on, he is gonna be a huge addition.

Edit: If Gurley does go pro, it will be 100% this system and Nate Oats helping him get there.

Composite top 25 forward Julian Phillips discusses his final 10

For the first three years of high school, Julian Phillips made his reputation in his home state of South Carolina. For his senior season, though, he’s off to Branson (Mo.) Link Academy.

The 6-foot-8 forward who is currently ranked No. 23 overall in the industry generated 247Sports Composite ranking explained why he’ll be making the move.

“After talking with coach Rodney Perry and everybody there they showed my family everything that the school had to offer in terms of player development I thought that it was a great thing for me,” Phillips told 247Sports. “I thought that by me going there it would be something that would prepare me for college.”

During this last summer, Phillips played some of the best basketball of his career on the Adidas 3SSB circuit with the Upward Stars. He shot the ball better than ever from deep and showed off much more overall skill. For him it was a matter of getting in the gym and focusing.

“Just consistency with the workouts, hats off to my trainer Christian Savage,” said Phillips. “We got into the gym a lot during the spring and summer before AAU started. We had a goal with coach Curt Wheeler of Upward as well about the things I should be doing in front of the coaches. We got in the gym and worked at those things and consistency in the gym it all paid off.”

Phillips recently cut his list of schools to a final 10 that includes Alabama, Clemson, Florida, Florida State, Kansas, LSU, Tennessee, UCLA, USC and Virginia. He’s already been to Clemson, Florida State and LSU and he’s got a September visit set for USC. As he sets up his other visits, he discussed what stans out about each of his finalists.

Alabama: “Coach Oats, I think he’s a great coach. They had a really good year last year as well. I think they are a great school, and I would be interested in seeing what they have to offer if we can get a visit scheduled as well.”

Clemson: “They are the home school and it isn’t too far from me. Coach Brownell, I talk to him a lot and I have a good relationship with him. I’ve visited a couple of times because I went on unofficials earlier in my high school years prior to my official. The campus is real nice, real beautiful and I think they are a good program.”

Florida: “Coach White, I talk to him a lot. Him and coach Pinkins. They seem to really like my game a lot and they think what I can do could help them. They say I would have a chance to come in and impact them right away.”

Florida State: “Draft night, it has been real interesting to see the amount of guys that they have put into the League. Coach Hamilton and Coach Smith, I think they have a real good staff and a real good team as well. They just tell me that my game with my size and my length fits what Florida State does. They have a really good program.”

Kansas: “You know Coach Self is a legendary coach and the program is always good. He tells me, well him and coach Roberts I talk to a lot, they just like the way I play and they think that what I can do could really help them.”

LSU: “The visit was great. Me and my family had a great time down there with coach Wade. They have a really nice campus with real nice facilities, and everything was very good when I went down there. Coach Wade loves my game and I’ve been on multiple zoom calls in the last few weeks where he’s breaking down my game and things like that.”

Tennessee: “Coach Barnes is another great coach. The thing that stands out with them is that when I got on the zoom call with them last week, they were real keen on player development. Especially with guys at my position the more wing type players and coach Barnes has had some success with some great wings.”

UCLA: “They told me that they love how I play. Coach Palmer and coach Cronin they both think I fit really well with what they do out there in California. They really want me to come out there and see what they have to offer and hopefully we can get something scheduled.”

USC: “Coach Capko and coach Enfield I think they really have a good program and they’ve had some recent success in the Draft as well. I’ve been talking to coach Capko for some years now. I’ve always had a really good relationship with him, and he’s always said he wants me to come out there and see what they have to offer because it is real different. I’ll be excited to get out there.”

Virginia: “Tony Bennett, man he’s a great coach as well. They have a great program there and just had Trey Murphy in the Draft and they’ve had success with guys that play similar positions to me. I have a good relationship with them as well.”

Ideally, Phillips would like to decide before the start of his senior season and in time for the early signing period. It is just going to be a matter of sorting through the fluff of visits and what is real and for that he’ll lean on those closest to him.

“I’m just going to listen to my family and the people in my circle. You know coach Wheeler; I’ve already talked to coach Perry some about my recruitment and things like that. Then myself, I am doing research on the schools, their recent Draft picks and trying to get as much info as possible.

“When you go on a visit everything is going to be very nice and the best they can make it so I’m listening to people who have experience with these type of things, doing research on my own and that’s what I’ll do to make the best decision.”
