On a different note there is a good bit of difference between Gurley and Bruner, Gurley is 6'8 and athletic, Bruner was 6'10 and stronger/better rebounder, but not very athletic. Gurley is the same size as Herb, I think Gurley plays mainly the 4 unless we go with a small fast lineup, which we may do a lot who knows.
I did predict Gurley to start at the 5 in game 1 due to it being vs a semi tough opponent and him being a lot more experienced than Tchikou or Bediako.

Will we not get a buy game at home before we hit Orlando for the thanksgiving tourney? I figured it’d be like last year how we played JSU, and then went to Maui (or Asheville technically)

Unless Covid delays the start of the season, I’d anticipate at least two games before that tourney.

Yeah you're right, I was thinking it ws a beginning of the season tournament for some reason.
I guess cause last year the season didnt start til around Thanksgiving, but it should start around the first of Nov like normal this year.

All good man, was just asking more so out of curiosity myself. Ill be interested to see who we fill out the schedule with, at this rate it will be Texas and UCLA to open the season.

He rebounds on both ends, runs the court, protects the rim, you can switch him on defense, etc. That's what he's good at, and he's really good at it.
Exactly, he's a junkyard dog. But i think he's got more offensive game than we saw last year. He's never gonna be a guy who can run the point, but i could see him being a slasher. I think that he will end up being a very well rounded player by the time his career here is finished.

Due to our system, I think the only time a specific position delineation (such as 1, 2, 3, 4, 5) truly matters is defensively.
Offensively, it is pretty much always going to be four guards/wings and a big/wing (probably less wing at the 5 this year due to better depth/skill at the position than we've had the previous two seasons). Having an experienced and skilled ball handler/facilitator like JQ allows you to have basically any combo of four other players you want on the roster to be successful offensively.
For example, a lineup of JQ, JD, Shack, Ellis and Gary would be able to put up points on pretty much anybody. But running with this lineup for too long and you're going to have a problem defensively.
Ellis is a guy that can play 2-4 on either side of the ball in our system without any problem at all unless the other team happens to have a 6'10" monster PF playing next to their 5 which is pretty rare in college basketball. A guy like Shack or JD can play any of the 2-4 spots offensively like Ellis, but defensively they are really only built to play the 1 or 2.
Gary is the most interesting on the roster when you break it down like that. He has the height/size of a big 2 or a 3, but he doesn't have any of the ball handling/perimeter game to play that offensively (unless he takes a big step this offseason). Last year he was most effective as an undersized junkyard big that was more athletic than most of the bigs he played against. If you were to play him more against wings this year, he would seemingly lose the athletic advantage he was able to have last year.

We should have a ton of lineup flexibility this year, I am interested to see the different lineups we roll out there. Bediako and Gary arent really traditional great fits for Oats' system but I expect them to both play a good bit mainly due to their rebounding and defense.
Gary plays so hard you have a pretty big role for him. I think he will win the hardhat a lot this year.

You guys think Ellis plays mainly the 3 this year? If so where does Shack play? Assuming Quinerly and JD are at the 1 and 2 most of the time. Also what about Burnett? He seems like a 2 or 3 in our system.
Makes the most sense to me to put Gurley or Ellis at the 4 most of the time, but then where does Gary play? It will be interesting to see what the coaches do with the different lineups. Like Chadaristic said, our positions are pretty interchangable on offense.

Shack will be at 2 I assume

Maybe so, I also wonder how the PG minutes shake out between JD and Quinerly, JD isnt as good of a shooter as JQ so it would make sense to put JD at PG and Quinerly at the 2 in a lot of situations. I think they try and have Quinerly and JD both on the floor together a lot, I would guess those two get more minutes than anyone else on the team this year.

Whatever positions guys play I love our roster this year and the versatility of it. I don't remember is ever having this many good players on a roster before.

I think/hope Ellis will guard the best offensive guard/wing on a nightly basis unless he proves he is unable to.

When we play against a dynamic offensive player like a Moses Moody or Jaden Springer type, we can start with Ellis guarding him and have a guy like Nimari on him when Ellis needs rest. Ellis/Nimari are both elite defenders and should give us a great 1-2 punch on the perimeter defensively whether they are on the floor at the same time or working in some sort of alternating collaboration.

If Gary, Gurley, and Tchikou are all healthy, we dont need a 4th big getting a lot of minutes. Miles has much more versatility, so i think he has a better chance to earn minutes.
Gary isn't a big, he had to play there out of desperation but he stepped up and did a solid job. If he develops his shot he'll be a wing but right now he's stuck as a 3/4 with us.

Outside of Shack, everyone can play multiple positions. I'm not really going to get too hung up over lineups, Oats has the luxury of being able to adjust rotations, depending on the opponent, without losing talent on the court (within reason).

A 3 is a wing and in traditional circles a 4 is considered a big so there's a lot going on here.

LMAO you beat me before I could do an edit. If he develops his shot he'll be a 3 but right now he's a 4. My mind must have melted right before the end of the work day.
And someone else earlier mentioned that positions don't really matter in our system, which is true. Only really matters defensively. Offensively, Gary is still going to play to his strengths regardless of what he's labeled on the court.

Is anyone considering going to Orlando? I have to plan out a vacation before the end of the year and was thinking a week in Orlando wouldn't be a bad idea. The family never has a big Thanksgiving, my main concern would be having to watch the Iron Bowl at a bar in Florida.

True. Last year we had Herb 6’8, Petty 6’6, Primo 6’6, Ellis 6’6, so we had a lot of guards who could play the 3 and 4.
This year Quinerly, JD, Shack, Burnett, are all 6'3 or under and some of them are gonna have to play the 3 at times, they cant all play the 1 and 2. Burnett is probably the most cutout to play the 3, Ellis will probably play some 3 and some 4.
