Here is our Minutes % breakdown last year vs Top 100 teams

He had a 100+ offensive rating in 22 of our 33 games. However, he was a disaster in the UCLA game (his worst of the year) and had some other games when he struggled (@ Arkansas, @ Oklahoma, @ Missouri). And that's what a lot of us remember.

For me, it was always his hero ball. Instead of passing when the lanes collapsed, he'd take those terrible layups. He's a talented player with an even better work ethic. He just needs to improve his efficiency on offense. Especially with NBA feedback, I'd like to think those are things he'll work on. Better shot quality, and finding passing lanes.

Being an undersized guard playing hero ball won't get him into the league. Being efficient and helping create opportunities for teammates will. He's got the ability to be a ballhandler, he just needs to be more intelligent with his play. That's what will get him paid.

Also I want to just make sure to clarify, that Shack post is based mostly off of the rumors and the players like JD tagging Shack, etc. Yes, there has been speculation tonight with some people saying he’s coming back. No, we don’t have concrete info he’s coming back. But YES, Alabama is still an option for him as far as we know.

100% agree. I do think there were times where he felt like he had to do some hero ball, especially in the middle of the year when we were struggling, and it really didn't go well. He's just not suited to get into the lane and make shots around bigs, and he's not quick enough to get guys on his hip.

But yea, 100% agree. The surrounding pieces are around him to let him play within the flow the entire year and have a big year.

Shorter guards like Shack and especially Quinerly could benefit a lot from being able to take a couple of short/midrange shots a game just to keep the defense from collapsing on them when they drive in a fast break situation and 100% knowing from the scouting report that if they shoot it's gonna be a layup.

I had midrange twos, and like Oats strategy about not taking them, but taking 0 of them is a bit extreme imo. I think he will let a couple of guys take some this year.

Nobody would blame you guys if it went the other way. At this point, it just feels like he's coming back. I dunno if we'll ever know the entire story there, but hopefully it's coming back with a renewed excitement to be here and get to work and not a "everything else fell through I guess I'll do this".

Agree - especially the things we talked about this thread a whole lot last year.........runners/floaters and jump stop short bank shots/jumpers from 5-7 feet. They don't have to shoot 17 footers, but something that is inbetween a 3 and a shot directly under the rim would be a big tendency breaker. Trae Young is a pretty great example of that - his drive game wouldn't work nearly as well (or at all) without the implementation of his floater from varying distances (at the rim, 5-6 feet). That shot gives guys pause on total collapse (along with the oop option).

I think implementing those in all our guards games would be a pretty nice counteraction to teams side saddling our guards to the rim knowing they are either going to shoot at the rim or pass it out with no other option.

If anyone ever needed to develop a legit short to mid range floater like Trey Young, it's Shack

Yeah exactly. If you're 6'3 or under in the NBA you have to have some kind of floater or short pull up or something like that, especially guys like Trae Young, Steph Curry, Quinerly ect who aren't super athletic leapers.

Absolutely. And he's crafty enough and good enough with tough shots at the rim, he just hasn't figured out how to counteract his size issue at the rim. He's proven he can make tough layups when he feels he has space (he's very good at the rim on the break, for instance), but when he attacks the rim in the half-court he just really seems to feel defenders and struggles.

Yep - long, athletic defenders can guard you in your sleep if they know that you are only going to take 1 of 2 types of shots and neither of them are in conflict with one another. That killed us during the middle of the year and a few times late in the year.

Chris Paul made 16 straight pull up twos a few weeks ago. Was pretty crazy. I only know cause JQ liked the tweet and it showed up on my timeline.

Oats is a smart basketball guy, one of the smartest in CBB imo, I think we will see a few more short twos from guys like Shack (if he returns) and Quinerly this year, not a ton just enough to keep the defense honest.

Gonna go way way way up.

I think he has the potential to be an all SEC player. He should have some improved athleticism this year. I think he's one of our best finishers at the rim. He's gonna get some plays run for him going to the basket similar to what Oats liked to do with Herb. Plus he is a dog on the boards. Maybe our best rebounder; who else? He's gonna be a cross between Tony Mitchell and Chris Hines, a junkyard dog with a dribble drive.

Latest rumors seem to be Oklahoma or Us for Shack, guess that may have a spot open after all, conflicting reports.

That Porter Moser/Loyola system last year was interesting to watch and hard to defend but that was about as far away from an NBA system as possible. That was some 1950s throw back offense.

Josh Moon has been dunked on so much over that tweet.

Shack liked that Britton Johnson tweet last night too, idk if that's a sign or not.
