I love Gary as much as anyone on this board, but I don't think he has Herb's lateral agility. He has light feet and good defensive instincts so I think he can probably stay in front of guards in spurts when he needs to, but not for 20+ minutes nightly. He's an undersized forward until he proves he can handle the ball and shoot a bit. If he can do those things then it gives you more flexibility for what kind of lineups to play him in.

yea not a lightning quick pg persay, but we def disagree on him being able to guard most off guards. id never want or expect gary to have to play the 2 spot anyway. his ability to play more at the 3 in spurts under certain lineups is what im talking about. we have six other actual guards. if any teams missing four or five of their top 6 guards theyre screwed anyway.

well miles was thrown in that garbage time position to eventually have that versatility in his game, but 2-4 was his actual position range. he would currently be our 4th option at best to run the point. jq, jd, and nimari are light years ahead in that department, and like with any team if were missing our top 3 pgs then yea, it doesnt matter anyway.

ok, heres my issue w/ getting shack back besides the obvious of what others have said on the baggage and talent ceiling. after having my eyes opened to the possibility of our rotations wo him, i really just see him creating more of a log jam at the guard spot. besides hurting our defensive versatility, it also means less minutes for jq, jd, and keon, nevermind the up in time for more versatile guys like miles and nimari.
shack is too proven, too old, and now has a raging delusional pappy to ever accept only playing half the game at most, even if it would be best for the team.

would shacks proven guard depth help in case of injuries and cause less of a preseason concern in rotation? sure, but to me the overall rhythm of the team on both ends has more potential without him. ofcourse oat's takes him back if thats what happens, but like an earlier poster said thats more just solid...

knowing what we know at this moment I have no idea how you can be comfortable thinking that he might be our 3rd or 4th option as a primary ball handler.

Most people in the portal over 6'2" aren't ball-handlers either and the ones under 6'2" aren't as impactful as Obanor or Cockburn. I understand the concern, but most rosters are one or two injuries away from major concerns at a position of need. Currently, if Gurley goes down and Tchikou can't get healthy (this is a major concern of mine), we're in line for some significant spacing issues. If on top of that Bediako isn't ready for major minutes, we'll have rebounding and rim protection issues as well.

Right now, I'd say we have 3 legitimate ball-handlers and 1 that can handle in a pinch. I think that's enough to feel comfortable approaching the portal with a BPA mindset.

Obanor would make this team an instant contender and I am not just talking SEC...I am talking Final Four.

Gurley and Obanor would deal teams absolute FITS...our guards would have a field day because defenses could not pack the lane. Bediako and Frentchy would be able to come along at their own pace and if Frentchy comes back healthy God help who we play you just thought we could rain threes last year.

We have two legit PGs in Quinerly and JD and Burnett could be a solid PG if he has to play it, he has PG experience. This is the best PG depth we have had in years.

This will probably be an unpopular opinion but I think Gurley is a better all around player than Obanor, Gurley is a way better defender, Obanor is a good bit better on offense but don't sneeze at Gurleys offensive skill, he shot 41% from three two years ago and scored 29 points vs Auburn.

That being said I would still love to have Obanor, just hope that it wouldn't cut into Gurley's role or playing time.

Yeah, I do too. Going with a lineup up JQ, JD, Burnett/Ellis, Obanor, and Gurley would be pretty dang interesting.
We would be fast but still would have above average rebounding, good shooting lineup too.

Alabama arguably leads for two of the best players in the 2022 class: Jaden Bradley and Walker

Yess!!!! Walker is probably my most wanted player in this class, 6'8 220 and legit is athletic enough and a good enough ball handler/shooter that he could play guard for us, he actually plays PG at times for IMG. 5 star, 11th ranked player in the 22' class.

Twitter speculation is that Obanor’s final four will be Alabama, Arkansas, Illinois, and Texas Tech.

Pretty interesting too that Bediako, Bradley, and Walker all play/played for IMG. Oats would have the IMG pipeline on lock if we end up with those three. Even if it means hiring their HC as an assistant I am down. He had Oats must have a good relationship.

I swear to God I had just written out a post saying that I thought that would be his final 4 til I got distracted by the Jarace Walker news. I would be speculating on Alabama and Illinois though, Arkansas and TT are the only two I would for sure put on there. That's not to say I am sure he goes to TT or Arkansas, if we make his final 4 we definitely have a good shot at getting him.

I think Shack goes there if he transfers but I would bet actual money that Obanor doesnt end up at TT. I may be wrong, I know there is some speculation that they lead.

This is about where I'm at as well and we already know, based on last year's minute allocations, our top 3 Guards will all be getting starter minutes. We could essentially always have a PG on the floor with JD/JQ and Burnett will eat the rest of the minutes and he gives us a very strong 3rd ball handler.

The offense shouldn't skip a beat since the flow won't dip too much compared to when Herb or Petty had to act as the main primary ball handler.
