I like Williams and Radford if we're adding a guard. Cockburn just makes no sense to me. All I can come up with is that his NBA feedback was "get faster and show us you can shoot", which he'd pretty much have to do if he played for us. It's still a 2 way street though, and I don't see why our staff would think he's a good fit. I think there's room for a big who grabs boards, scores around the basket, and protects the rim, but he's got to be able to run the floor.

the official basketball twitter handle said that rumors that shack doesnt have a spot at Bama are not true and he is welcomed back.

My question is why would Oats want him back if he is definitely shopping. Pull the damn scholarship even if you dont have someone to give it to. Give to a walk on

Hell nah. In today's game, we are definitely using the scholarship.

Why in the hell would you give a scholarship to a walk-on when you can give it to either a guy who has averaged ~15ppg over the last two seasons or a transfer who started at a major program last season?

I think it's more of a "he's good, so we'll make him fit."

Oats has a system, obviously. But slight alterations will always be made to the system, depending on who you have on your roster. And he might be good enough to take the risk and help make him fit. We'd still okay fast, but maybe not top 10 tempo fast.

I think everyone agrees we need a shooter. So if he's taking Cockburn, he knows something the rest of us probably dont.

Cockburn would be a different dimension in our offense. He's a big, slow, immovable object under the basket. His physicality down low would negate the trouble big teams like State gave us last year. If teams tried to guard the perimeter, we could just feed it to him down low and let him bulldoze people to the basket. It's what he's best at. But his lack of athleticism would be a big negative and at times, he would be a hindrance on the court as we would be left playing 4 on 5 as we waited for Kofie to lumber his big arse past mid court. He has intriguing possibilities, but I just don't see it being a good fit. He would be a damn force in the middle, but he's just too immobile. Give me Obanor any day of the week and twice on Sunday. That dude can fill it up from anywhere. His only negative is shot volume, but maybe that was at least partially due to his supporting cast. Surround him with better players and maybe he will pass the ball more.

Drew DeArmond tweeted this morning that it was looking more and more like Shack returns to Tuscaloosa. I don't know how I feel about that.

I’d be thrilled to have Kofi! A 3rd year, 7 foot, borderline elite center who can defend the big boys we’ll run into into is a no-brainer to have on your team, regardless your style of play.

Maybe Kofi needs a system like ours where he can develop and get in the shape where he can run the courts while staying effective getting boards and finishing.

It would be huge to have him be an anchor to our guards. We could shoot how we want and pound inside when we need to.

I'd rather have him then Shack and it works for Shack so he can go somewhere and be a PG. We already have three starting quality guards to run with Gurley. Just need the right big.

If I was Oats... I would encourage Shackleford to move on, especially if we have opportunity to get a big time player like Kevin Obanor... I would go all out on him. This allows Rojas to not be rushed back and have him ready in Jan/Feb.

I tend to agree. Firstly, he ain't any top-level teams' point guard..and never will be. He lacks the things that you can't teach.
Secondly, Oats is building his reputation at Alabama right now! Withdrawing that schollie would enhance the future Alabama basketball scholarships' prestige and value!

I mean...I would take Shack back because when his shot is falling he can win you a basketball game. He just needs to cut down on the stupid shite like the blind drives with heave ups that have no chance to go in.

But I would still prefer Obanor or even Cockburn. I don’t know why Oats and Hodsgon were so loyal to Rojas

I don’t dislike the kid, he would be a good piece. At this point, I’m just over it.

ETA. I don’t get it either. He must be a hard worker and good locker room piece, otherwise I can’t reconcile what I see with everything else.

Cockburn is big but he seems to move well and looks pretty athletic for his size to me. Not saying he's the perfect fit for our system, but sometimes you take talent even if they don't fit perfectly. An NBA team may run a space and pace offense to perfection, but if prime Shaq wants to come play with them, they'll find a way to make it work. I think adding Obanor or Cockburn would cause a seismic shift in our expectations next year.

Having said that, Cockburn mentioned specifically that he wants to showcase his midrange shot this year. We would be an oddly curious choice if that was the case.

But what I didn't see at all in that video and what i havent seen him do is dribble the basketball. That's how raw he is. If this dude wasn't 6'11, even if he was just 6'7, he wouldn't be on a basketball court.

You haven't seen him dribble because it's becoming clear that you've barely seen him play at all. Here he is stealing the ball dribbling all the way down the court and dunking it. I think you have to be trolling at this point.

Multiple writers have noted that Oats was at all of Jarace Walker’s games this weekend. Good sign that he’s at the very top of our board.

I hate to say it, but he dribbled twice in the clip you timestamped, and both looked awkward as hell. That being said, he doesn't need to be a ball handler right now. That can and will develop.

Well he is dribbling is the point, and he dribbles a lot, anyone who has actually watched him for more than 30 minutes would know that. He is a borderline 5 star for a reason and people watch him play 10 minutes in an u19 game and they they scout him better than people who work at 247 or Rivals.

I guarantee you this guy didn't know Bediako could shoot before I posted that video of him hitting threes yesterday, clearly didn't since he compared him to Carl Engstrom and Jimmy Taylor.
