And for the record, I hope you're right. Would be excellent news for Primo to return.

Nbadraft.net, which ive always felt was the best, ranks Herb as the 57th best prospect, Petty is #76, and Primo isn’t in the top 100.

I think those are the same rankings they had several months ago. I used to look at those too, but quit because they never seem to change. If you look at ESPN, and CBS/ 247 and someothers, Primo is in there, and it seems his stock is going up. Anyway, whatever any of these so called "experts" predict, being invited to the Combine means more than predictions. Should be noted though that all the foreign players are not in the Combine.

It’s gonna be very interesting to see how the class of 2022 plays out. I honestly have no clue who’s gonna be a part of it or anyone who’s already a bama lean. There are multiple ways this class could go.

I really want Primo back but if I'm drafting late in the 1st and Primo is still there, I'm absolutely taking a flyer on him. You can stash him on the bench for the year, while getting minutes when you can, and letting his body develop a bit more and refine other aspects of his game and then let him take over his 2nd year. All the NBA sees right now is a dude that oozes potential.

You mean that there are zero foreign players in the combine? Why? That seems dumb, considering there are several foreign first round guys.

New for @YahooSports: Could John Calipari be ready for a return to the NBA? Several NBA execs think so: "He is much different than his first go-round but that ego is hard to tame.” Cal and other candidates to watch

quote:

John Calipari, University of Kentucky head coach

Calipari is a bit of a surprise here, but multiple sources tell Yahoo Sports Calipari would be open to jumping back into the NBA. He had a taste in the late 90s, taking over the then-New Jersey Nets following a stint at UMass that didn’t go particularly well. But the changing dynamics at Kentucky, along with the massive expectations from the fan base and alumni, could have him looking for a second bite.

“He may have maxed out at Kentucky,” a high-ranking executive told Yahoo Sports.

“College basketball is a sinking ship,” another executive told Yahoo Sports. “He is much different than his first go-round but that ego is hard to tame.”

Calipari is 62, so if he wants to make a move back to the NBA, it’s likely it’ll have to be soon. He’s coached many of today’s stars and has been outwardly supportive through the years, letting it be known Kentucky is a pro factory.

Contrary to belief, he’s an intense in-game coach — which means he’d have to dial it back in the NBA. But it’s possible and it wouldn’t be a stretch to see a team owner allured by Calipari’s celebrity and experience.

Calipari last cash out, the problem is UK fans LOVE Nate Oats. Their board has had so many threads on Oats/Bama it's not even funny.

I could see Cal going to the NBA for the same reason that Coack K and Roy W retired, they had been making a living off sharing the top 20 players in most classes between them and having 3 or 4 top 20 players in each of their lineups.

These players are going to the G league now, and the built in advantage these coaches had is gone.

yep. That, or the new high school/professional team (overtime elite?).

Honestly, the NBA fricked everything up when they quit letting guys go straight to the draft. At the time, there was no legit other options for minor league development. And NBA teams were making bad picks based off potential (sound familiar?). So rather than let teams continue making bad decisions, they screwed over players and let the NCAA be the development league. 1 and dones screwed everything up, even though 18 year old rookies were coming in and often being effective at that age.

Then players started going overseas. And they wanted to stop that, so they made the G League ignite team.

One of the most interesting players on this list, Alabama freshman Josh Primo looks like he may be leaning towards the draft.

At 6-foot-6 he has a lot of upside as a deep jump shooter and he doesn’t turn 19 until December. This isn’t to say that the NBA is scouting birth certificates, but it is no secret how much age plays into the equation when the league is projecting future value.

During the early- to even mid-part of his first season in Tuscaloosa, the Canadian looked like he was almost a lock to return to school. Now, as the draft gets closer and closer some NBA sources have indicated to 247Sports that Primo has a very good chance of being taken in the first round.

If he gets that assurance, he won’t be back. If he doesn’t, he may not be back either. But, there is no doubting that a second year of Primo would be a very good thing for Nate Oats and the Crimson Tide.

Don't know why, but aside from a few foreign guys in US colleges, the combine list does not include those foreign guys you see in the draft projections. I guess most of the foreign guys are already playing pro ball in Europe or somewhere else, and maybe teams draft the rights to those players and plan to sign them later.

Basketball recruiting: Auburn, Alabama offer Baker rising sophomore Labaron Philon

It’s been a memorable last few weeks for Baker basketball phenom Labaron Philon.

This year’s Coastal Alabama Newcomer of the Year received college offers from Auburn, Alabama and South Alabama last week after the Hornets attended team camps at those schools.

Philon just finished his freshman year.

“He’s an incredible player,” Baker coach David Armstrong told AL.com on Wednesday. “A lot of the guys (in Coastal Alabama) recently have been extremely athletic and can jump out of the gym. Labaron has that, but also has the ball-handling skill and ability to get to the rim you rarely see. His shot is getting better every day. He works hard. He is extremely skilled. It’s going to be fun to watch him for the next few years.”

Philon added the Auburn, Alabama and South Alabama offers to a list that already include Samford, Alabama State and Ole Miss.

“It’s good,” Philon said of the attention he has gathered from colleges. “It’s not shocking to me. I just have to keep working to get better. I have three more years of high school basketball left. But it is a great feeling.”

As a freshman this past season, Philon – a 6-foot-2 point guard -- scored 409 points for a 16-9 Baker team. He averaged 15.8 points a game, 4.6 rebounds and 2.5 assists. He was the highest scoring freshman in school history. He made 91 of 133 free throws.

“I was surprised a little by the year I had,” he said. “I was like, ‘Wow.’ I didn’t even know what I was doing some of the time. I was just trying to play at a fast pace and help my team.”

Armstrong wasn’t surprised.

“(Former assistant) coach (Andre) Epps knew Labaron from middle school, and he told me how good he was,” Armstrong said. “I was still skeptical because it is just so hard for a freshman to come in and start in Class 7A basketball in this state.

“Then COVID hit, and we weren’t able to have play dates last summer. I could see his skill level in limited workouts, but then when we were able to go 5-on-5 I could see how he was giving everyone problems. I was like, ‘Ok. This kid is the real deal.’ He scored 37 points against Blount in the fifth or sixth game of the year. A freshman? Against Blount? That doesn’t happen much.”

Armstrong said the sky is the limit for Philon with three more years of high school basketball remaining. He compares his talent with that of former Theodore Mr. Basketball winner Dazon Ingram and current Gatorade Alabama Player of the Year Barry Dunning Jr. of McGill-Toolen.

“He’s a point guard who can score off the bounce on his own,” Armstrong said. “A lot of the guys are super athletic and fast but don’t handle it as well. He handles it in a different way. His ability to dribble the ball is a little different. He doesn’t have high flying ability that Dazon and Barry have, but he is capable of scoring at will on just about anyone.”

Philon said he is in no hurry to make a college decision. He just continues to work on his game and wait for opportunities to continue to open. Armstrong said he has handled the attention well so far.

“I think he doesn’t quite know where he wants to be,” he said. “He’s still got a year before he can be contacted by a college coach on his cell phone. He’s a quiet kid who doesn’t talk a ton. He’s not overly confident and arrogant. He knows he’s good, but he continues to work hard and get better. I think he’s a long way from whatever decision he makes.”

Dothan’s JD Palm turning heads on the court

When a 6-foot-9 basketball player receives a Division One offer, it’s normally not that surprising, but when it’s a 6-foot-9 basketball player who hasn’t even started his freshman year of high school, that’s a different story.

JD Palm is just about to start his high school career at Dothan High, but has already caught the attention of Alabama head coach Nate oats.

After attending the Tide’s basketball camp this month, the soon to be freshman picked up an offer from the crimson and white.

“It was a big moment,” said Pal,. “Everybody was excited around me. You know I was excited. My mom was excited, my grandma. That felt like an honor.”

“I’ve never seen anyone at this age that I’ve coached personally get that type of attention ,” said Dothan head coach Janasky Fleming. “For it to happen to him, he’s a real humble young man. You know, after he found out he nodded his head and said no more about it. He’s really handling it well and that’s the kind of kid he is.”

The type of kid that thinks more about others than himself.

“Being able to provide for my family when I get to the higher level and being there for my teammates,” said Palm. “Helping them get scholarships. It helps them get a chance you know.”

On the court though, Palm is a menace.

JD doing it all for the Wolves last season averaging 12 points per game to go along wit seven rebounds, two blocks, and three assists. All wile shooting 39 percent from deep.

“Being able to play the two through the five at the high school level is real big,” said Fleming. “I’m quite sure with the way Alabama plays, he fits their style.”

Despite being just 15 years old, JD knows how to it feels to be in the spotlight.

“I feel like it’s a lot of pressure on me you know but I’ll adjust to it,” said Palm.

“I believe he’s used to the pressure,” said Fleming. “He has seen the highs and the lows, winning and losing and competing. Knowing when you walk into the gym and everybody’s staring at you. I think he’s kind of getting used to that now.”

And with four years left of high school, the spotlight is sure to grow.
