The quality of shots he's going to get next year will be night and day from what he got this season. I'd be shocked if we don't unlock the ability that made him a Top 10 player.
The length and athletic ability is what I love to see. Still not sure about Philon's status but Alabama will have 3 or 4 guards with 6'4''-ish height and D1 playing experience and an additional freshman incoming with 6'5'' height.
The reason I keep on coming back to Philon and Reid in my comments is because with Bethea a picture starts to come into shape that feels like a team with elite potential.
The 3 guard 2 forward lineup is not incredibly compromised on size with most lineup in that configuration featuring nothing but 6'4'' or 6'5'' guards. The 2 guard 3 forward lineups should have incredible length without compromising spacing.

100% agree with all of that. If you insert Philon into this roster it has a chance to be really really good.

Thanks to all of you guys on that last page for the positive feedback and information.
I'm definitely excited about this pick and the other two.
Oats may not be perfect but man when you have a GUY he can always just keep you competitive and these three additions look like they'll have us right back in the top 5 or 10 next season.
I liked the look of that San Franciso guard as well.. do you guys think we're out on him?

1) happy for the new guys, but we need at least 2 more creators to make this roster work for big time basketball.
1 down and hopefully 1 to go

3) we’ve got to have a big point guard that can create and defend
Close enough. Huge pickup with Jalil!!
Philon, Reid, and Stevenson coming back would be unbelievably awesome, but even 2 of the 3 would make this roster really dangerous. Definitely need Stevenson to take the next step in taking care of the ball and making smart decisions (not panicked ones) for him to get to a level of everyday starter in the next 2 years. Need all 3 to be putting up 500-1000 3s a day in the offseason and taking a page out of Sears’ playbook there. Love that our most accomplished player in history was also one of our hardest workers.

Who do you think we go after next SOG?

I checked his stats and he isn't a great 3-point shooter
No. He was known for his 3 point shooting coming out of high school. I didn't trust much of anything that happened at Miami last year. Larranga should've retired a couple years earlier.
Here was a scouting report from 247 as a recruit....

Jalil Bethea proved to be one of the best scoring guards and shot-makers in the country this year. He’s a shooter who can make tough threes, both on the move and off the dribble. While he can occasionally hunt his looks and settle for contested ones, he still put up incredibly efficient numbers in the EYBL, knocking down 41% of his threes and 86% of his free-throws. He was even extremely efficient inside the arc, shooting 59% on two-point field goals while also showing an ability to raise his release point in the lane. While he’s usually looking for his own shot, Bethea has shown flashes of being a good passer when he wants to be. Similarly, he moves well laterally and shows stretches of being an impactful defender, which should come out more at the next level. Physically, he has a wiry build with high hips and more narrow shoulders, but some sneaky athletic pop and absolutely no fear. He plays the game with an edge and only needs to consistently harness it in the right way while he continues to build up his body.
Here's one from one

It is the scoring with Jalil Bethea that you walk away talking about. He scores it in an efficient manner at each level of the floor. He has a good frame, nice length, positional size, and a projectable frame. Bethea is a good athlete and has some quick-twitch and straight-line burst when he is heading toward the rim. His jump shot form is good - albeit his release can be inconsistent at times - he knocks down shots off the catch (off movement) and off the bounce. His handle is at its best when he plays within two or three dribbles, would like to see him tighten things up beyond that. He can be a good defender, with the length and the athleticism, would like to see him continue to stay engaged on that end. He plays with a lot of confidence and has a smooth demeanor about him. Shot 40.8% from three and averaged 1.17 point per possession for Team Final during Nike's EYBL Circuit.

Looks like only real remaining priorities are
(1) Figuring out which of Jarin/Reid returns. I'd assume not both.
(2) Figure out Philon's plan. If he decides he is definitely gone, have to find another point guard. If he's going to test the draft, going to have to figure out a plan to either take a guy now or figure out who might be in the portal later when the draft process ends. I'd be pretty shocked if he came back without doing the draft thing.
(3) Get rid of Aiden's baby fat and get that man ripped up.
I like Aden a lot as a piece on the roster, but I don't love him being the clear #1 point guard. His value is a lot higher as a spark plug bench guy who can be a little bit more than that when needed. But if Philon leaves, not sure what other SEC level starting point guards will be out there ---- especially in June if he does the draft process. Tough needle to thread for Oats. But the chance that Philon does come back is definitely worth it.

Feel like you cannot manage a roster with wait and see approach these days. Philon needs to make a call and Alabama needs to pay up or move on. Hurts to say that but it’s a business now.

Next season is looking to be setting up nicely. Oats knows what he needs.

Well did this last year with Sears and Stevenson. He’s going to go through the draft process and see where he stands.
I personally think he’s going to get a borderline 1st round grade. His 3pt shot started falling a bit better later in the year.
There’s 2 schools of thought. He could come back and almost certainly play himself into a higher pick. Or he could get in the system and start the clock toward his 2nd contract, where the real money is. The guys who choose to go aren’t so much worried about the nba vs nil money. It’s the starting the clock toward contract 2.

I'm interested in which grad departures stick around to use the facilities and play pick up with the new guys. Help the transition. Show them the standard

I'd agree in most years but this draft is super deep with talent. Philon isn't even in the top 3 of point guards in this year's draft. He could be a lottery pick in next year's draft if he stays. But maybe he shows out at the combine and some team gives him a guarantee. Either way I think you have to wait and see on the most qualified guy to run point for us.

Philon does indeed need to return for one more year. This year he had to share a lot of time at the point, next year it’s all his. He will definitely have more exposure and development at the point to become a lottery pick…that’s worth a lot of money!

I think I read somewhere that Latrell Wrightsell Jr might have an opportunity to run point some.
I don't how true that is though.

If Philon leaves, I suspect we will be running a platoon at point. Just my opinion, Wrightsell initiating the offense means fewer opportunities for him to get spot up shots on the wings and corners.

OM makes sense. I wasn’t thrilled with the notion of him to Bama.
Minimal offensive threat.

i wasn't big on is taking Chest, as he only really seemed to have one really good game (against us, of course).
I LOVE our potential roster while still waiting on Philon, Reid, and Stevenson. That being said, I do wonder who will be our best rebounder and tough guy/dirty work guy. We're losing Cliff, Nelson, and Mo. I can project Sherrell to be really good on the boards. Bowen is long with elite athleticism, but rail thin. Williamson is a 7 footer. However, he doesn't appear to be an elite rebounder. Reid, if he sticks, should be really good at it with his size and athleticism (and just seems to have an all-around natural feel for the game). Stevenson, if he sticks around, is just an okay rebounder for a big guy. I do have some concern about our rebounding as it stands right now.
On the plus side, we should be MANY levels ahead in athleticism and perimeter length. An almost otherworldly upgrade there. Bowen and Bethea are elite NBA starter-level just purely from a length and athleticism standpoint. Hannah and Jemison are elite athletes... among the very best in this class. Allen is a very good athlete, even if not quite the level of the other two incoming freshmen. All have nice length. I can't emphasize enough what a radical upgrade we will be from an athleticism standpoint. I also believe we'll be a better shooting team... even losing Sears. He was a bit up and down shooting this year, actually. We get Wrightsell back. He's about as good of a shooter as anybody in the country. Mallette is very good. Bowen and Bethea should be high % shooters. Jamison had a huge revelation becoming a great shooter in his senior year. CNO has said he thinks Allen is the best shooter he's ever signed (I assume he means out of HS). On the whole, I'm very excited! Just need to find improved rebounding among returning guys and newcomers.
