Who’s going to the Houston game?

I hope Tchikou is as good as y'all think. I haven't seen anything from him since high school highlights, other than the video of him working out against air last week and missing at least two dunks.

Yea I think the brakes need some pumping here. He hasn't played in a competitive game in 2 years (and that was high school/AAU ball), he's coming off a very significant injury and to be frank he's not exactly been in the coaching staff's best graces.
So, I hope we get some good stuff out of him, but I'm not expecting him to just hit the ground running or be the difference maker against Gonzaga.

He's all potential and the injury derailed his development in a big way. He also seems to have some serious maturity issues. I think if he gets back on the right track he will be really good, but I would not expect it to be this year.

He's definitely got game if he's healthy and in basketball shape. I would imagine he'll probably be on the shortest leash imaginable though.

I harped on it a bit the other night, but I think once Bediako and Gurley start to settle in a bit we're going to be really deadly on pick and rolls. We're clearly pushing the issue early on, and I think the efficiency will improve as the bigs become more integrated into the offense.

I wonder what the SEC's roster continuity would look like if you exclude Mizzou and UGA, who lost practically their entire rosters to the portal.

That was one of the things we talked about re: Bediako in the offseason, was that if he could just be a rim runner on PnR and a rim protector on the other end then he would be a huge net positive. He's already proven to be more advanced offensively than I knew and a better instinctual rebounder than I knew, too. Then, the 2nd half against SDSU JD really started making them pay on high PnR rim runs when they started trying to overplay that pick at the top of the key.
If we keep developing that, man, sky is the damn limit for this offense. There just aren't any good options to implement defensively against us. You have to have 5 athletic long defenders who play well together and are very good at constantly switching to consistently shut us down.

We’re better than every team ranked ahead of us. Our defense is more active and engaged than anyone else in the country. We remind me of Baylor’s from last season, but we have the rim protection they lacked. Bediako has come on quickly after a shaky start in practice, and it’s safe to say all that Langston Wilson>Bediako talk has been put to rest. Last year we heavily relied on the 3 ball and would go on severe scoring droughts when we weren’t hitting. I love and appreciate Petty for being a monumental part of changing basketball culture in Tuscaloosa, but he could be a black hole on offense for the majority of the game because he lacked the ability to put the ball on the floor to drive and kick. That would halt our ball movement, and scoring when the team wasn’t hot became very difficult until Quinerly broke out into a bonafide star. Petty was engaged on defense, but he didn’t offer us anything on that end that hasn’t been replaced this season. We have the ideal roster to run the 5 out to perfection. I don’t think there’s any team in the country who can beat us when we’re playing our best, and I truly believe we’ll win it all this year.

Blast from the not so distant past that feels very distant
I totally agree re: Petty and even Herb. I love those guys and they were very good college players, but Petty's streakiness and Herb's shooting deficiencies were never ideal fits in this offense. Oats schemed around them and pushed to their strengths, but his peak system implementation did not involve those guys sill sets. The roster right now is about as close to a perfect roster for what he wants to do as exists. Long athletes, tons of ball handlers, always 3-4 guys who are consistently solid 3P shooters, a huge athletic big and a scrappy undersized big.
If we keep improving this team has legitimate sky is the limit potential, IMHO.

Speaking of Wilson, didn't realize he ended up at Washington
Looks like he's in their rotation.

That's why I'm glad we're making it such a point of emphasis early in the year. Last year I think a big reason we were kinda hot and cold on offense was that we just weren't all that versatile. On hot shooting nights we could run anyone in the country out of the building, but when they weren't falling all we really had was dribble penetration to score in the paint. This year, so far, it looks like we should be able to score in the paint without our guards having to do all the heavy lifting. We're always going to take a bunch of 3s, but those looks will open up a lot more if teams know they need to camp a guy out in the paint.
