Recorded the game and watched it last night. Pretty disappointing effort. And that’s two in the last three games. Just lucky enough to escape against South Ala, but yesterday we weren’t. Not pushing the panic button, but also not sure this team is going to be top 10 good either.

Anyways let’s flush it and move on to today. Drake is 3-1. Their loss to Belmont was their first of the season. They have wins over South Dakota and Richmond. Seeing Bama -6.5

So Nate got schooled by Rick P? That just might be a good thing going forward. See your weakness early and fix it as best you can.

Hope Bama doesn't have case of the poor pitiful me's today or loss #2 will be logged.

I love this take right here. I really think when it's all said and done JD will be the Alpha dog for this team
No doubt!
He's gonna be in a league with Gerald Wallace, Kira Lewis and Collin Sexton before he leaves town!

One could argue that college coaches are smart enough to know that Shack is going to hoist them up every game no matter what, when guys like Keon are only going to take them when they are spoon fed to him.

Shack is a pretty good shooter, but everybody (including himself and Oats) needs to stop acting like he's some new age Reggie Miller/Ray Allen/Steph Curry. He's a pretty good shooter in college that is also quite streaky and known for forcing shots that aren't there.

~35% is about the minimum for someone that I would consider a "good" shooter.

I would classify Shack as a volume scorer. He scores a lot of points, because he takes a lot of shots. Scoring 16 points doesn't really do shite to help the team win if you aren't being efficient, taking care of the basketball and playing strong individual and team defense.

Shack is an undersized and somewhat inefficient scorer with a negative assist/turnover ratio that has become an average to above average perimeter defender. That can be a pretty good college basketball player, but it also isn't a Naismith winner or NBA Draft pick.

I don't know who needs to hear this, but Shack isn't some game changing type talent. Shack is a pretty good college basketball player that shows flashes of greatness in short bursts. His professional basketball career opportunities are going to ultimately come from overseas. I'm glad he's on our team - he's a great fit when he plays true to the system and doesn't force things - but there are times in almost every game when he just single-handedly wastes possessions by trying to do too much when the situation begs for simple basketball teamwork.

I didn’t get to watch the game closely because if family Thanksgiving, but the times I did watch out guard play was pretty bad. Was that the theme of the game? Was it the Iona defense frustrating them? Didn’t seem like their defense was that great while I watched, just a lot of sloppy ball handling and passing, and dribbling into trouble.

here is how we lost games last year. 52% at throw line and 13 TO's to only 7 assists.

Going 52% from the line didn't help either.

Yes. Iona didn't play what I'd describe as good defense but they have the strategy for beating us nailed down. Knowing we'd take what the defense gives us, they weren't helping a ton and decided to limit our perimeter looks and force us to win on the back of our ability to finish at the rim one on one. And since Shack is the guy who always attacks the rim despite being an objectively mediocre finisher it severely limits our ability to go on anything more than like a 6-0 run.

There was a stretch I watched late in 2nd half where they were finishing at the rim and we were not. But I also saw Miles nearly air ball a FT.

Setting the FT shooting aside, I think Miles needs to play more minutes if Ellis and JD aren't going to be more willing to create for themselves. He's like 5 inches taller than Shack and significantly more athletic, and you know he's very willing to create for himself. We just can't fall into the same trap we did last year in a lot of games, where if teams take away our perimeter looks we end up watching Shack take 15 wild shots around the basket, commit another 5 turnovers, and waste a ton of possessions. Herb isn't walking through that door. This team won't be as good defensively as we were last year, so the constant ups and downs with offensive efficiency have to be cured.

This was pretty much the case. The problem is, when the guards go 7-15 from the FT line, it makes for excellent an game plan.

Honestly before Quinerly drove in and got rejected I almost thought Pitino would foul JD knowing he wasn't going to make two.

But he's the key to this team. He has to make free throws and hurt teams enough to where they have to take him as a serious threat when he has the ball. Make a three or two and go to the basket, and finish.

But he's got to play like it. Too timid with the ball right now. Just dribbling around killing the shot clock is a waste.

If he had Shack's attitude he'd probably be a double figure scorer, go to the hole or bust.

Because he can actually finish.
