Hey George, if you're reading this...
I could really go for an SOG special soon.
I've grown accustomed to a certain kind of lifestyle and one of your deep dives into the metrics is part of that. Hook us up if you've got some free time.
Man, not a lot to add. This team doesn't need a lot of break down - they are just a solid arse basketball team across the board. The biggest (and really only) area of weakness is what everyone has talked about : turnovers, both creating them and giving them up.
Other than that, we're just a super consistent and good team. It's refreshing to have a pretty good idea of what you are going to see every night.

Best wins of that 15 game start (torvik ranks)
- #45 UCLA by 6 (home)
- #59 Texas A&M by 21 (home)
- #74 Arizona State by 5 (neutral)
- #108 Tennessee by 18 (road)
Losses
- #14 Wichita State by 1 (road)
- #19 Iowa State by 10 (neutral)
- #22 Xavier by 13 (road)
We were ranked #57 on Torvik while sitting at 11-3 (2-0).
Also - that was Grant's last team. We beat Illinois in R1 and then lost to Miami in R2 of the NIT.

Agreed.
And it's hilarious that my very next post after you said that was about that 14-15 team.

UT’s schedule is a lot easier than ours though
Yes, but not by much, IMO.
We do play our single game with UT in Knoxville.
We each play 3 common teams twice: Auburn, Vanderbilt, and Mississippi State
However, our non common play twice teams favors UT.
We play LSU and Arkansas twice. UT plays Kentucky and South Carolina twice.
And FWIW, they play Texas and we play Oklahoma.

Hard to believe that Kessens and Jimmie Taylor are still playing Pro ball in Europe.

College basketball's top 20 transfers: Illinois' Terrence Shannon leads rankings of players at new schools
Nearly 2,000 -- yes, 2,000! -- Division I basketball players hit the transfer portal last offseason. The mass exits and entrances across the country meant there was of course bound to be some players left in tricky spots, yet many have clicked right in with their new homes and are producing at a high level.
David Cobb looks like something of a wizard in fact if you go back to look at his preseason transfer rankings -- a lot of the big names atop the rankings are producing -- but I wanted to revisit the rankings with a refresh now that we're a few months into the season. Shake the dust off and see where things have started to settle, you know?
I tried to do a top 10 list but there were too many deserving players worth mentioning so a top 20 (with a few honorable mentions) is the way I went.
These rankings factored in scoring, rebounding and assist production -- typical counting stats -- but they also factored in team success, the efficiency in which a player is producing and the overall importance of that player in the grand scheme of their respective team. Therefore, these rankings are 100% right. So please if you disagree just tell yourself you're wrong and keep scrolling.

16. Mark Sears, Alabama
Stats: 14.5 PPG, 3.6 RPG, 2.8 APG, 42.9 3P%, 16.3 PER
Alabama has a way of unearthing big talent from the mid-major ranks and Sears, an Ohio transfer, is just the latest find. He's been a stellar sharpshooter next to true freshman superstar Brandon Miller who can hit the 3 at a high level and has added some playmaking and creation to boot. Alabama plays with great pace and embraces defense so Sears has been a perfect fit for what Nate Oats and his staff are trying to accomplish.

I don't know what the metrics say, but my eye test tells me he's been better defensively than I was expecting as well. Not saying he's a lockdown defender, but he does a good enough job imo. Some of the other guys probably help to cover up some deficiencies, but it's all working well.

Mississippi State is now dead-last 363rd in Division-1 in our Momentum metric. Both the graph and the red & green numbers in the far right column tell the story. Things definitely took a wrong turn for the Bulldogs in mid-December.

100% agree. He probably would have been a pretty bad defender on last year's team, but like JQ this year he gives very good effort and he does seem to have a good feel for spacing and angles and things. Combine that with having Clowney/Bediako behind you and the length of Miller and others beside you, and you can be a pretty good defender. You can clearly see why he wasn't highly recruited out of high school - his physical traits aren't great and the things he does well are the types of things that college coaches aren't going to be on translating to the next level for a short guy (finishing at the rim, shooting).
I, like you, had a fear that he might not be athletic enough to really play at this level, but he is good enough. He knows his limitations and what he can do.

They did start the Conf sched with the two best teams in Alabama and UT; but you’re right that the downward trend began earlier. They may end up in the bottom half of the SEC and likely miss the NCAA tournament.

It's currently a Q1 win, so i'll pulling for them to win as many games as possible for the rest of the season.

Oats on Miller: 'We're gonna enjoy him for the one year we've got him'
Freshman Brandon Miller once again led Alabama in scoring Tuesday as the men’s basketball team topped the Ole Miss Rebels, 84-62, in its SEC home opener.
Miller tallied 17 points on 7-of-12 shooting from the field in 29 minutes of game action as the No. 7 Crimson Tide advanced to 12-2 (2-0 SEC) on the season. His impressive showing included a highlight dunk off an alley-oop pass from fellow freshman Rylan Griffen and a 45-foot, 3-pointer late in the second half to give Alabama a 76-58 lead from the logo at midcourt.
“I warm up shooting deep shots, but I don’t think I practice those,” said Miller with a smile after the 22-point win. “I think some just fall at times.”
It wasn’t his best performance in a Crimson Tide uniform, but it was his 13th outing (out of 14 regular-season games) of scoring in double figures. Averaging 19.1 points per contest, Miller is the SEC leader in scoring as the calendar changes to 2023, and Tuesday’s game against Ole Miss was the latest example of why the former 5-star is projected to be a lottery pick.
In his latest mock draft, Jonathan Wasserman projected Miller to the Toronto Raptors with the No. 8 overall pick. That would tie Collin Sexton for the third-highest draft position by a Tide player. Antonio McDyess was the No. 2 pick in 1995. Leon Douglas was No. 4 in 1976.
Alabama has had four players drafted in head coach Nate Oats’ tenure, including two players taken in the top 14 picks (Kira Lewis in 2020 and Josh Primo in 2021). Herb Jones in 2021 and JD Davison in 2022 were also second-round selections. Oats praised that quartet for being the high-character kids that they were and said Miller “follows in that same suit” this year.
But essentially being a 6-foot-9 combo guard, Miller also separates himself from the pack.
“He’s a great kid with a good personality, works really hard, really cares about his team,” Oats said. “It is nice to have the best player on the floor most nights when you go out, though, as a coach. It makes my job a little bit easier. He can create some offense, make some tough shots when you’re struggling a little bit. We’re gonna enjoy him for the one year we’ve got him. He’s gonna be really good next year in the NBA. He’s been really good for us.”
Oats also said he plans on helping the McDonald’s All-American improve in his time at UA.
“We’re gonna get him better,” Oats said. “There’s things that I think he still needs to do better. He’s gotta finish at the rim better. He’s gotta get better defensively. He’s gotta rebound a little better on a consistent level. Tonight, he didn’t have any offensive rebounds. I think he can be better for us on that end. But he’s really talented. He’s gonna be a lottery pick.
“He’s gonna make us all proud here when he leaves here. But while he’s here, we’re gonna try to win a lot of games and have some fun doing it.”

Brandon Miller only has eight games left in Coleman Coliseum.
If you can make it to a home game (or an away game for that matter), do it.

I love how Oats is trying to find a negative he can take to Miller and harp on him a bit. Get him to keep him working and improving. The kid has a special talent and hasn't fully realized it yet.
Miller has played the most minutes on the team.
Most FGM and FGA on the team.
Most FTM and FTA on the team.
Most 3PM and 3PA on the team.
Most points on the team.
2nd most offensive rebounds on the team.
Most defensive rebounds on the team.
Most total rebounds on the team.
4th most assists on the team.
Most steals on the team.
3rd most blocks on the team.
Tied for the most turnovers though, so he probably does need to work on that.
