College Basketball Preview: 10 second-year players poised to break out in 2022-23
We are less than one week away from the start of the 2022-23 college basketball season. Everybody is excited to see how the new recruits look, how transfers adjust to their new homes and which teams can live up to the preseason hype.
Personally, one of my favorite things to watch each year is the developmental steps made by players between their freshman and sophomore seasons. I love to see who is going to break out and become a star or a vital piece of their team.
Everybody has their own definition of a "breakout star" and there are plenty of valid ways to describe somebody as one. So, to keep things clean and simple only players who scored in single figures as freshmen and played under 25 minutes per game are eligible to make this list. That being said, I'd love to to include guys like Florida State's Matthew Cleveland, Creighton's Arthur Kaluma to name a few because I feel they'll become favorites of the college basketball world this season. But, they put up impressive numbers in year one and don't quite fit the previously mentioned criteria.
With all of that in mind, here are 10 second year players — listed in order of their high school ranking — that I feel will become much better known by fans of college hoops throughout the course of this season.
quote:
CHARLES BEDIAKO, C, ALABAMA
High school ranking: 33
2021-22 stats: 6.7 points, 4.3 rebounds and 1.5 blocks per game
Why he’ll make a jump: Under Nate Oats, Alabama plays an up-and-down style so it natural to focus on the guards who are controlling the tempo. However, if anybody was watching the Crimson Tide closely last year, they had to have noticed the efficiency of big man Charles Bediako.
The seven-footer was extremely reliable as a post finisher and for the season converted on 69.2% of his field goals. That's pretty dang good. You know what's even better? The 77 field goal percentage he boasted during February and March. Those are some crazy numbers for a 12 game stretch.
With a year under his belt to adjust to the speed and athleticism of the SEC, look for Bediako to be a much bigger part of the Alabama offense. He's shaking off a minor injury right now and could be limited early. But, there aren't any long term concerns there. Also, it's not reasonable to expect him to keep finishing at such an incredible clip. However, he's got room to improve his rebounding as his offense comes along. If all of this comes together, we are talking about a guy who should emerge as one of the SEC's top big men.

United States of College Basketball: Predicting the best team in each state for the 2022-23 season
![]()
With the season less than a week away, one of the final pieces of our preseason package is among the prettiest — and most hotly debated. As we always do right around this time of year, it's time to give you a map of college basketball's landscape.
The 2022-23 version represents my forecast for which team will be the best in its state over the next five months. Some states (Wyoming, Vermont, Maine, Hawaii) lack for drama, as they have no competition and get the same logo every year. Others (California, Texas, New York) are loaded with Division I programs and a privy to a map makeover every autumn.
Since Alaska does not have a Division I team, the best team in 49 states and the District of Columbia gives us 50 teams highlighted in these United States of College Basketball. (You may have to squint for Delaware, Rhode Island and D.C.) Below, you'll find a pithy summary on the state of each state and why the teams that won out were chosen.
quote:
Alabama: Alabama Crimson Tide
State of the state: For the first time in a long time, the Yellowhammer State has a claim to three of the 40 best teams in men's college basketball. Auburn, the state's best team a season ago, is ranked 15th in the preseason AP Top 25 poll, while UAB received a vote. (All three are ranked in my top 40; UAB is my pick to win Conference USA.) It should be the Tide who emerge as the strongest basketball team this year. Know the name Brandon Miller. The 6-foot-8 freshman could be the key for a team with plenty of juniors and seniors to take a leap and compete alongside Kentucky, Tennessee and Arkansas in the SEC.

My favorite.

(Arizona, Kansas, LSU), the IARP says,
These are joke penalties. Self's basically are the same as Pearl's, couple of games, which is no penalty. Read the book Sole Influence, by Dan Wetzel. A good chapter there on how street agent Myron Piggie channeled players to Roy Williams at Kansas. Also how the NCAA worked with Roy to get LSU penalized and let Lester Earl transfer immediately to Kansas. Roy got away with more than anyone ever - even Self and Pearl. Roy later skated at UNC, with the help of Greg Sankey's NCAA Infractions committee in "the worst academic fraud in the history of college education" according to accrediting agency SACS. Meanwhile our players buy a few books for friends and Saban has wins stripped and 5 years probation. The lesson here: cheat all you want, but never ever cooperate with the NCAA.

I honestly could believe that if it were once but multiple times? Going commando is fun at home, but it should only take one incident of exposure in public to correct that.

If the shorts don't fit, you have to acquit.

toughest schedules in college basketball in '22
1) Michigan St
2) Alabama

1) Michigan St
2) Alabama
quote:
Notable games
vs. Michigan State, Nov. 24 in Phil Knight Invitational
at No. 3 Houston, Dec. 10
vs. Memphis, Dec. 13
vs. No. 2 Gonzaga, Dec. 17
Schedule thoughts: Nate Oats continues to be one of the most aggressive schedulers in the modern game going. There's a couple softies tossed into the early slate so No. 2 might be a tad generous, I'll admit, but with Michigan State, Memphis and Gonzaga on the schedule and a road test against Houston on tap, it's hard to pick too many nits. These will all be appointment viewing and No. 20 Alabama made plenty of effort to try and schedule up, not down.

Days until tipoff: Ennis Whatley

I remember Ennis's first game in Coleman running out the clock late and having those defenders chase him in circles nears half court. He was making them look silly.
