That elite defense better learn quickly how to defend the pick and roll without giving up an easy layup or wide open three to a good shooter. UConn did it over and over again by helping off our worst shooter (Gurley when he was in). We didn’t help most of the night and when we did, we left their best shooter open on the rotation.

It’s almost like they’ll have an entire season to gain experience to match their physicality and athleticism

I don’t understand why Oats continues to let Gurley shoot that three. He’s open for a reason. If I’m an opposing coach he can take that shot all game.

While you’re not wrong, despite your sarcasm and identity insults of people who disagree with you (good luck in marriage young buck), I was really looking for better in game adjustments from Oats.

The 2 he tried were 1) putting Bradley as the main on ball defender since Bradley’s a little stronger than JQ and Sears when switched on their post guy and 2) sagging off of their big guy and trying to let the guard run through the screen to recover leaving the post guy wide open at the top of the circle.

Both of those adjustments worked temporarily, but UConn eventually counter adjusted and the post guy hit the dagger on the 3 to put the game out of reach. Would have liked to see us try a better help rotation with not letting their best shooter beat us…help off the 2 worst and hope they don’t get hot.

Miller needs to work on his handles. That’s his biggest weakness on offense and limits his ability to create for himself more effectively

Or to put it in your language, “It’s almost as if Dan Hurley was showing Oats exactly how to defend a pick and roll and Oats refused to try it.”

This is the game I watched.
I never quite understood our strategy.
Long season so maybe we’ll be really special and not inconsistent special.

He certainly can improve his handles, but you can tell he is very cognizant of not wanting to turn the ball over. It’s difficult to dribble through traffic as a 6-9 guy with lots of hands swiping at the ball (and double teams coming consistently). He’ll get more and more confident as he plays at this level.

Absolutely, but you can see when he brings the ball up court that he loses control a lot. The ball ends up at his shoulders a lot off the bounce and he has to almost stop to control it. I believe he can be an all time best here if he improves a little in that area

He's just aggressive and that's what was needed last night but we missed an opportunity to play him more.

They will get better though.

I’ve had lots of practice on how to respond to that 5 letter response….”you’re right, Sweetie, you’re always right.”

Pretty disappointing last night. Not necessarily the loss itself, but how it happened. We let it get out hand and that might have been the most unfortunate part of the game. We were competitive at times, but UCONN was persistently the better team yesterday.

UCONN is a legit, top 10 team right now. They look as good as anyone in the country so far. Their defense was unrelenting and lights out. The offense was consistent and efficient for most of the night. They have experienced upperclassmen and Dan Hurley coached a good game. Not really much else to say about them, they’re just a very good team.

We’re still too streaky. Too many long stretches of +/- runs. We’re good, but we definitely need to be more consistent. The offense put the defense in some bad positions last night, especially in the first half.

We haven’t adjusted well on offense when our base sets get stopped, but it’s kinda been that way since Oats got here. Not a complaint really, but he could definitely be more prepared to make in-game changes instead of letting us get stuck in an ISO offense for too long. It’s not a bad thing when you have the playmakers we do, but we could still run better options from there than high screen/reset.

A lot of fans seem unhappy with JQ right now, but I think he’s looked good to be 7 months of an ACL surgery. He does look timid, but he’s only played 3 games. He has a good floater when he shoots it, but I can understand the lack of confidence in a “full speed to stop” move in traffic. He will be a positive contributor this season.

Wish we had a combo JQ/Sears PG. Sears is efficient and doesn’t turn the ball over, but lacks the burst/athleticism JQ has when healthy. Maybe one of the young guys will step up and give us another option. We’re still playing a lot of guys right now and have a lot of tough games before conference play starts. We have plenty of time to work out the rotation and let the younger guys develop.

Overall, I’ll be happy with the weekend if we beat UNC today. Two top 12 wins and a top 10 loss (assuming UCONN makes a BIG jump this week) would be a positive tournament. I’m glad we didn’t drop our first game, again… gave us a positive outlook for the tournament and some very good resume games. 2-1 against a slate of MSU, UCONN, and UNC would be huge for the program. We haven’t played a stretch of games like that since, well… last year Still, those are powerhouse basketball programs and we shouldn’t overlook that. Have to beat the Heels today though. Absolute must if we’re going to call this tournament a net positive.

Imagine my disappointment when I couldn’t find the game on the second TV today… I was originally upset that it came on at the same time as the IB, then I was tore up that we didn’t play until tomorrow
