Here’s the TNews update
quote:
Nick Pringle has been practicing with Alabama basketball the last few days and will make the trip to Auburn, coach Nate Oats said Tuesday. Oats said Pringle will be available to play vs. the Tigers, though Oats doesn't know how much Pringle will play.
"He's gradually working his way back in," Oats said.

Is this common in American youth bball? This approach reminds me of "Total Football" which the Dutch used on their way to becoming a power in soccer.
Not really. I would say some schools are getting better at starting youth basketball programs. Some schools are starting to start basketball at K-1st grade range. They play a peewee basketball travel League and play together. By the time, they are in 3rd or 4th grade they are really good.
Vs.
Other schools that start late 5th or 6 grade. That have very bad fundamentals and honestly its almost too late for these kids. I see 6th graders shooting 2handed and that should be cleaned up by 2nd or 3rd grade.
Little pioneer does 300 makes per day and has already gotten the attention of the Jr. High and Hs coaches. Granted, basketball is my sport as many as you guys know.
I will say for the most part the international game is so much better. They teach fundamentals so much better. Our kids over here rely more on athletic ability.

I will also say quality coaching is hard to come by.

I should have known it was a paraphrased quote. Here’s the full one:
quote:
“It reminds me a lot of high school gyms, just with a lot more people in there. You kind of pack 2,000 people in a high school gym and get a similar setting. Now you pack whatever they seat, 8,9, 10,000, whatever it is. That place is loud.”

This is a cool story
When I was a kid in Tuscaloosa, 6-7 I guess, my dad was friends with CM Newton's daughter and I was pretty good at hoops, taller than the rest too. She talked to her brother Martin Newton, AD at Samford now but probably a junior in HS then, and asked if he would give me ball handling lessons. So I'd go to their house every 3 weeks or so for probably 6 months, always very nervous as I was kind of shy. Each lesson was just about 30 minutes. I was told to bring a soccer ball and a piece of paper. Imagine how excited I was as we went to all the Ala games during that time. I can remember walking into the house and seeing CM at his desk doing whatever and Martin would take me to their basement. They had a little 7-8 foot goal down there but we never shot. He would show me all the old ball handling drills and we'd run thru them for a second and I'd write them down and then I'd go home practice those for a few weeks and come back for more. Pio's post about kids and fundamentals reminded me of that. The Newtons are good people and by about 8 I was dribbling without ever looking at the ball which if you are already bigger than the rest is a pretty big advantage.

Its the very first thing I teach is dribbling. At a young age, most kids hands arent strong enough and are too small. If they can dribble with a tennis ball they can dribble with a basketball. The tennis ball is a great trick that I use. Passing most kids aren't strong enough.
Dribbling can replace passing.

Yea his message was the soccer ball was better for kids, you could control it better. Move to the bigger ball when you get a little older. Makes sense.

Yeah if you aren’t playing basketball year round and getting in 30 hours of gym time a week by 10 years old you might as well quit.

Exactly. For alot of these kids, its the first time being coached and/or playing basketball.

I was being sarcastic. A superior athlete can start picking up the game of basketball in the 6th grade and by 7th grade will be dominating those kids who are average athletes whose parents have spent thousands of dollars for training and "travel ball" when they when they were 7 years old.

My point is alot of these kids are still shooting 2 handed and cant even dribble with the left hand. You can play aau at a lower level and spend almost next to nothing. Its the big shoe companies that drive up the price.
I was going with it and was hoping someone would take the bait.

Here is the link to FT shooting +/- home and away numbers(compared to opponents) in SEC conference games.
LINK
I couldn't get the image to post.
Only things that surprise me is we shoot fewer free-throw compared to opponents at home than away, and how bad Mizzou gets screwed.

How the frick has Aggy lost 2 home conference games and got lucky to avoid picking up a 3rd the other day when the refs are basically spotting them 10-12 points every game with FTs?
