Thoughts on Derrick Henry so far?

5.1 YPC, 2 TDs

Seems like he takes a while to get going, as you'd expect with a guy his size I guess. Definitely hard to tackle.

He good in the open field but takes a while to hit the hole in the inside stuff.

I much prefer to see Yeldon running between the tackles. He is so elusive.

I've noticed that too. Better outside than inside. Wouldn't expect it with his size.

I would like to see Henry get more screen/swing passes. Get him out in the flat matched up with smaller dbacks.

He may not be a very good receiver though.

He just runs too upright. Similar E Dickerson but Dickerson was so fast and could get through the hole fast.

I think Henry is fast when he gets going, but it takes him too long to get going.

But I know that is what you meant.

Exactly. Yeldon and Drake can hit top speed in just a couple of steps.

Hes too damn big to be that soft ......A guy tackled him by pulling his shoestring one time.

Seriously if he would run angry like Gurley (I know tough comparison) but imo he could run a lot harder and be dominant .

Come on, some of y'all are overreacting. If he has performed soft/poorly for more than one game I'd understand, but this was one game.

This one game has done great damage to the psyche of Bammers worldwide.

Our running backs have been a bit underwhelming since Lacy left. I'm not really sure how big a difference the offensive line makes in that assessment though. Richardson/Ingram/Lacy all unquestionably played behind better offensive lines. Henry has been solid so far, but he definitely hasn't lived up to the hype he had coming into the season. He doesn't get downhill as much as you'd expect someone of his size, and he doesn't seem to have much burst into the second level. Really sucks Drake is hurt and never got many carries before that. He seemed to be the best pure runner we had both in 2013 and this season.

It isn't really just one game though.

He didn't look impressive at A-Day. His reported scrimmage stats were almost always average.

Only 5 carries, but FAU held him in check on his touches.

I still think he is a tremendous talent, and I'm a big fan. But I wonder what is up? I mean, C-Rob is the only OL that is consistently moving people in the ground game, so I get that the OL is partly to blame.

To me his running style is like a 200 pound back with slashing cuts and jukes instead of a 250 pound bruiser that defenders hate to tackle. Just my opinion.

he lacks vision and runs up the backs of his blockers. However I love watching him run the ball and I think all of these things are very fixable.

Hate watching him try and take the ball outside when he's as big as he is.

Get between dem tackles, baw!

I think he needs to plant and go a little more. This OL isn't opening gaping holes.

And as a few others have said id like to see him get it in space somehow.

A-Day?

That is a scrimmage. Tell me when any RB, WR or QB has ever dominated at A-Day?

Already know you're going to downvote because I laughed.

Nothing is "up". He isn't getting into rhythm because he has to share carries with TWO other great RBs.

He'll rush for 100 or go wildman like against Oklahoma again and I will bump and laugh.

Ole Miss took him down pretty easy with ankle tackles. Might be his weakness.

People will say he runs stronger the more carries he gets as the game goes on... Or does he just run stronger after the defenses have been worn down? It would be interesting to see his YPC by quarter.
