With two big studs leaving for the NFL from the running back corps and seeing the two big ones that were left struggling all game, it was good to see some new faces not struggle. Chadarius Townsend, a true athlete who can play running back or receiver seemed to have no problems a good 7.5 yards a carry, so the running game did have at least one bright spot.

With Jalen Hurts leaving for Oklahoma, it was great to see Mack(sp) Jones put on the show we who really follow the team closely knew he could. Jones showed that should Tua struggle or leave injured that the Tide is left with another gunslinger who can move the chains and light up the scoreboard. Jones may be the most underappreciated guy on the team for most of his time so far at Alabama, but his skills show he’d start at most other schools around the SEC. Having him as an insurance policy is huge for the Tide as you remember how important it was in the SEC championship game last season.

Also, the special teams looked like they’ll add some years to the fans lives by not causing so many heart attacks when it comes to field goal kicking. The punts looked fine too, so maybe we can all just take a deep breath and accept that this area is fixed. Backup long snapper Hunter Brannon had the only boo boo of the day with a bad long snap that Mack Jones had to fall on, but since Bama has gone years without a bad long snap in a real game, we can overlook that mistake. (this was actually the 1st snap of the 1st drive of the White team, wondering if this dude actually understands the game or knows who the players are?)

Lastly, it was good to see Dylan Moses feeling comfortable directing traffic and being a leader. One of the times I watched a replay of the game, I just focused on Moses and he looked in charge for most of the day and it was good to see him continue his “coaching’ on the sidelines when the offense was on the field. Following the game it was good to hear Moses say he felt he had folks on the same page during the game and there was no problems with communication during the game. This had to be music to Nick Saban’s ears too.

Seems we should be putting the Spring Practice thread to bed and move back over to the Roster & Recruiting thread to keep moving on to 18.

I enjoyed posting on the thread, hope I didnt break many rules and didnt post too much useless crap.

Thanks for all of YOUR contributions and for not hanging me out to dry. RTR

During the 1st few games the only one of significance would be the USCe game in Columbia.

Which I hope Bama doesn't look past. I live here in Cola and the buzz for this game is already getting pretty loud. Bama is going to come in to a seriously fired up stadium and team. The Gamecocks have one of the most passionate fan bases I've run across, and this will be the superbowl for them, in their house.

ETA: Plus they'll be defending the longest undefeated streak against Bama in the SEC.

The big thing too that a lot of people don’t realize is the distinct disadvantage on the road in the SEC. You’re only allowed 70 players to travel. So that means 15 scholarship players sit at home. Then Bama actually had a couple Walk Ons that played on special teams. So they had 17 scholarship players not travel. That could come into play with a couple injuries.

Folks need to understand that SoCar has a lot more overall team talent than many realize. Sure, they need to shore up some things offensively, but they will have a pretty nasty defense, and look the part of a legit SEC squad on the hoof.

It wouldn't surprise me at all if SoCar gad a legitimate say in who wins the East.

Thanks again for all the time, work and effort you have put into this thread. It was a lot of fun to read and to contribute.

I'm considering creating a new thread dedicated solely to the following question:

"Should Saban hire both an offensive and a defensive off-field assistant who's only job it is all year to prepare a game plan for the next Clemson game, and if so, who should Saban hire (both for the O and the D)?"

I hear you, but I only think a team really needs 55 or 60 guys on the sidelines for any particular game. If you travel with 70, you're traveling with 10 or 15 scout teamers.

I know that at one point it was roughly 60-63 Scholarship players and 7-10 walkons to reward them for their efforts in practice.

My point was that if Bama travels with 70 players, there are at least 10 to 15 guys (probably more) who have absolutely no chance of being needed to help win the game.

I'm not disagreeing, just threw in what I knew about UA traveled in 2014. The biggest issue with the 70 comes down to how you travel with special team only players and that can be addressed.

Sure. For reference, I believe the NFL travel limit is 52. I support traveling with 70 or whatever, and it's nice to reward lesser contributors with traveling and dressing for games, but I can't see how traveling with 70 is a competitive disadvantage at all.

I believe last year that the participation chart only shows that 71-72 was the maximum number of players who played in the most mundane of games, with about 55-60 being the average in most games.

Agree, that setting on ready for the Alabama game would make the season for the cocks (remember they hung over 500 yards on CU last year, just couldn't score ---hmmm that sounds familiar....)

LINK ]One Alabama freshman offers hope for one of Tide’s biggest problems Al.Com - By Rainer Sabin | rsabin@al.com
quote:

One of the lasting images from the sad final act of Alabama’s 2018 season was a botched fake field goal attempt early in the second half of the Crimson Tide’s 44-16 loss to Clemson in the national championship game.

With Alabama trailing by 15 points, holder Mac Jones was smothered well short of the line of scrimmage during a play that never had a chance of being successful. It not only was a football calamity that summed up the worst loss in Nick Saban’s Alabama tenure but a stinging indictment of a kicking game that didn’t promote any confidence last year, when the Tide missed five field goals and — almost unfathomably — nine extra points, the most in the 130-team FBS division.

Most responsible for the abject performance was Joseph Bulovas, a redshirt sophomore who has a strong leg but dodgy accuracy.

Bulovas reminded everyone of his shortcomings Saturday in Alabama’s A-Day spring game, missing two of his three field-goal attempts as he hooked one to the left and sliced the other to the right. He also saw one of his point-after attempts ricochet off the right upright before successfully going over the crossbar.

But Bulovas’ struggles were counterbalanced by one moment that offered a glimmer of hope.

It came with 1:10 left in the first quarter, when true freshman Will Reichard nailed a 43-yard field goal from the left hashmark that comfortably sailed through the uprights.

Reichard, a three-star prospect from Hoover, was ranked the No. 1 kicker in the 2019 class, and there is some optimism that he could be the antidote to Alabama’s kicking woes.

“I think the guy’s a really talented guy,” Saban said last December. “I mean, he’s a really good person, hard worker, really good specialist in all regards. He can punt. He’s a really good kicker.”

But until last Saturday, the viewing public had yet to get a glimpse of Reichard, whose work behind closed doors drew praise from Saban on March 30, when the head coach noted he performed well in the first scrimmage of the spring.

LINK ]Former Alabama QB John Parker Wilson Breaks Down A-Day Tide102.9 - Marquis Munson
It was a big day for the Alabama Crimson Tide after strong performance coming out of A-Day. Although the starting quarterback has been confirmed to be Heisman runner-up Tua Tagovailoa, the other quarterbacks competing for the second strong role also had a big day inside Bryant-Denny Stadium.

John Parker Wilson, former Alabama quarterback and color analyst for the Crimson Tide Sports Network, joined The Game with Ryan Fowler to discuss how limited is game planning during A-Day, Mac Jones, Taulia Tagovailoa and Paul Tyson's performances.

For more of John Parker Wilson's thoughts on Alabama football and A-Day, make sure you lisen to the audio below the article.
14:38
0-03:35 - Yada - Yada - Yada
03:35 - How limited is the Game plan on A-DAY? pretty limited with few running plays, and limited blitzing schemes, etc
04:00 - Do teams ever do things they are NOT going to do, such as flanker/halfback passing plays? "most likely NOT" just not enough time to put in plays like this
05:00 - Analyzing QB's - Tua
06:00 - Analyzing QB's - Mac Jones
07:40 - Analyzing QB's - Taulia and Tyson, great that they both came in early and got 15 good practices in to be exposed to the SEC and learn the playbook
09:24 - Tualia's Interception, Safety baited him into throwing a bit late
10:40 - John Metchie, regardless of playing against the 2's he was out there competing and pushing the 1's
12:45 - Does A-Day favor one side over the other? - D usually

For the latest news, breakdown and analysis surrounding the Alabama Crimson Tide, don't miss The Game with Ryan Fowler weekday afternoons from 2-6 p.m. for everything Crimson Tide and listen to John Parker Wilson every Tuesday at 5 p.m. CT and call the studio line for questions for the former Alabama quarterback.

LINK ]Alabama Spring Position Recap: Running back - BamaOnLine By Charlie Potter
quote:

Spring football has ended for Alabama, and Nick Saban and the Crimson Tide have entered the offseason after 15 practices. But with those said practices and UA’s annual A-Day Game still fresh on our minds, we recap what happened at each position this spring, while also looking at the past and future of the groups. We continue our spring position rewinds with the running backs.

PRE-SPRING QUESTION

Damien Harris ran out of eligibility and Josh Jacobs declared for the NFL draft, so they wouldn’t be back for the spring. But everyone knew Najee Harris and Brian Robinson were the next players up at the running back position in Tuscaloosa. The only question was, at least during the spring, where the depth would come from behind them -- not only in April but for the upcoming season and at an area that was going to be one of the thinnest on the Tide’s roster for the next 15 practices.

LINK ]Alabama Spring Position Recap: Running back - BamaOnLine By Charlie Potter

WHAT WE LEARNED

Outside of Harris and Robinson, Alabama had a couple of options. Redshirt freshman Jerome Ford went through his first spring and flashed some potential, especially in the first of three scrimmages. The coaches also chose to move the versatile Chadarius Townsend to running back where he did some nice things, including in the A-Day Game (four carries for 30 yards).

Overall, Saban was satisfied with his top-two options out of the backfield. The 13th-year head coach sang Harris and Robinson’s praises all spring long, and that was expected given Harris’ usage last year and the promise Robinson showed in his opportunities as a reserve. He was also complimentary of Ford and Townsend. But Saban left to door open for one of the Tide’s two summer enrollees to come and compete for the No. 3 spot in the rotation during the preseason.

“Do we have some guys coming here that are going to get an opportunity to compete with them? I think so,” Saban said. “We’ve got nine players coming on defense and three more guys coming in on offense, and all of those guys are going to get every shot over the summer and fall camp to be able to compete with the guys that are here. So, nobody’s going to be entitled to anything when it comes to next fall. I know that guys, all you care about is the depth chart.

“We don’t have a depth chart. Everybody’s going to compete, and hopefully, we’ll be able to get those guys to be able to play winning football at running back past the first two guys, as well.”

QUESTIONS WE STILL HAVE

Given Saban’s comments about the incoming freshmen, how quickly can they pick up the offense, as well as the responsibilities that fall on Alabama runnings backs -- pass protection, etc.?

The Tide signed the nation’s No. 1 running back in Trey Sanders, who predicted he would win the Heisman Trophy as a true freshman, as well as the No. 15 running back in Keilan Robinson. At least one of them could join the rotation in their first season of college, just like Jacobs did in 2016 behind Harris and Bo Scarbrough, so history suggests a highly-rated youngster gets a shot.

“We’ve got a couple of other guys coming in in this freshman class, so we have had a lot of diversity at running back,” Saban said. “But most of the time, there has been a young player that contributes to that, almost always a freshman. Mark Ingram was a freshman when Glen Coffee was here. Trent Richardson played some when he was a freshman and Mark was the player.”

Will Ford and Townsend be able to hold off Sanders and Robinson when they arrive this summer?

ALSO, talks about those who stuck around: Josh McMillon, Mayden, Shy Carter,

PRE-SPRING QUESTION

Alabama’s three starting receivers -- and four if you count Jaylen Waddle -- returned for another year. But there were no questions about Jerry Jeudy, Henry Ruggs III or DeVonta Smith. Entering their junior seasons, those guys are veterans in this offense, and we know what to expect.

The wide receiver position wasn’t a concern ahead of spring practice, either. So, the question surrounding the group was can the depth at wideout take that next step during the 15 practices?
