I have a kid in Tuscaloosa right now. After all expenses, I'm giving about 30 grand a year. Can't really afford to pay 1% of a high school kid's demand to play safety for the Tide.

Even if I was filthy rich I wouldn’t be spending it on kid to sign with Bama.

I would have this beast sitting in my shop and showing my arse in it from time to time

I too completely agree.

Caleb Downs, Bond, Ricks are all perfect example of why you’d be a fool to donate to the collective with the current rules in place.

But, as we know. A fool and his money are soon parted.

If that is what college football becomes, I'll just stop watching.

I looked into it. I, like many of you, despise what college football has become. After this week, I had a if you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em attitude. I just couldn’t pull the trigger. One of my biggest concerns is the lack of transparency. I’m not in the habit of blindly giving someone money and having no clue how it will be spent.

Also, as MySabanPlease pointed out, you can be putting money towards retaining the players but the players have no contractual obligations to honor a 3-4 year commitment to the school.

My hunch on the existential crisis that forces a reckoning on pay for play in the guise of NIL goes something like this:

* There is a major market crash

* One or more of these donor collectives was playing the markets to get extra returns to help chase elite players at "market value" but their investment strategy ended up being particularly hard hit by the crash.

* Since the market crashed, if a broader economic recession happens the collective will eventually see a decrease in their donations.

* Collective(s) are unable to make their payroll

* Direct deposit does not hit. If this happens during the season, you could see a large-scale walk-out of a major program in the playoff hunt. If during the Spring, you see a mass exodus to the portal when it opens.

Bidding wars like Caleb Downs and others are the preceding circumstances that is going to lead to more collectives being exceedingly aggressive with their financial moves and investment strategies. It's going to happen and probably something vaguely like I described.
