SEC notebook: Scheduling format will soon be hot topic (247)

Conversations about scheduling — and whether to stick with an eight-game conference slate — should begin soon as the conference also prepares for its new multimedia rights deal with ESPN...

I could go for a nine game conference schedule with perhaps an extra bye week, especially with expanding playoffs looming. And as much as I enjoy the tsio butt kicking, I’d give it up for a more frequent rotation of east teams.

If the SEC moved to a nine game conference schedule, we could keep TSIO and still rotate two East games. That would allow a full conference rotation every three years.

The SEC would be foolish to go to a 9 game conf schedule. Last year's 10 game SEC schedule was a perfect example of what will likely happen - the SEC will be hurt by adding 7 more guaranteed losses to the conference.

There were only 4 SEC teams ranked in the final AP poll. UK, MSU and OM beat ranked teams in their bowl even though none of those SEC teams had a winning record. In a normal year those teams would not have made it to a bowl to show how strong the SEC was.

The AP poll ended up with teams like Buffalo, San Jose State, Coastal Carolina, Liberty, Ball State and Louisiana in the final poll, most of whom had no business being there.

The SEC could do something like mandate an additional P5 game in lieu of the SEC game. This would allow a more diverse sched and the SEC could flex its muscle in most cases by beating other P5 teams. Bama is already headed in that direction.

Nah. To be bowl eligible, any SEC team would only need 6 wins (3 of its 9 SEC games and it's 3 non-SEC games).

Same. I'm honestly tired of seeing the same 7 teams every year.

The best thing this new playoff is going to give us is variety.

The only team I truly care to keep an annual thing going with is Auburn and LSU. Other than that, give me a little spice of life.

I like 9 conference games and better rotation as you say, but drop a gimme game. Season ticket sales have been declining at many schools anyway, and people are just not attending games against Mercer, West Carolina, San Jose State, etc. There is a lot of worry that an expanded playoff could cause teams to play 16 or 17 games. Then drop the games nobody wants to see. Keep the conderence championships because they make money and people want to go.I would be happy with 9 conference and play games against any two other teams - at least one with a Power 5 team. I loved last year with all conference teams.

Give me 9 SEC games and drop a Hellen Keller School for the Blind game. That's roughly 10 decent-looking games. I'm not worried about the rest of the SEC, it's not like we haven't been carrying the conference for a while now anyway.

Agreed, that’s why I suggest adding another bye week.

if the Txass and OU rumors are true... will have to go to a 7 div games plus 1 or 2 outside the div games... each year.. give up the traditional rivalry game...

Be careful what you wish for. This Super D1 we’re rushing to create will leave about 28-32 teams in the Power conferences and it will be like the NFL: you’ll play the same handful of teams every year with one or two new rotators from outside your division.
