Saban needs to find his version of Lincoln Riley
As more time passes, I start thinking more and more that Dabo is firmly entrenched at Clemson. Pruitt likely won't win enough to justify pulling him away from UT. And Kirby wont spurn "mama" for Bama.

Barring an unforseen emergence of another candidate, Saban will have to groom his successor. The thing is, I dont think that guy is on the staff (could be wrong).

Lincoln is about to bolt to NFL. Maybe he flames out and Bama can hire him on his return.

Keep an eye on Matt Campbell, Alex Grinch, and Luke Fickell. Also, Neal Brown.

I think this post could have been inserted in any number of threads and been a fine, forgettable post. I don't think it needed it's own thread. However, I always applaud the effort in the off-season.

Regarding your point, I believe that I speak for the majority when I say that I'm focused on winning now, and getting another Natty in 2019. Any year after that can go frick itself. I am choosing to believe that Saban will coach himself into the grave at Alabama, and the chips will fall where they may at that time. It'll likely be an outside hire of a former Saban Coordinator, and I'll get on that train when it exists.

However, that train currently doesn't exist, and I'm focused on the final week of spring ball and Aday. After that, I'll be focused on fall camp and the season. Rinse and repeat, and when Saban is Audi 5000, we'll see. But I choose to live firmly in the present of the most dominant college dynasty since Wooden's UCLA Bruins.

No thanks anyway though.

And Saban just needs to worry about this year IMO. Alabama is sitting pretty and will be able to get a good coach, we aren't in a Post Stallings-Shula type situation anymore.

Speaking of Stallings, that whole hiring from within deal didn't work for shite.

Yeah cause Lincoln Riley’s grow on tees. And I don’t want Saban focused on “grooming” a successor. That’s why we have a legitimate AD. To hire a legitimate coach after Saban retires.

It's not like this board is so busy another thread will clutter it. In fact, more threads are probably needed to make it a more active board. I mean, judging by the ads, the intent is to make money, and the more active it is, the more posters it will attract, and the more posters (the more clicks on this board) there are to view the ads, the more money the owner of this website will make. I am under no impression that a LSU fan made this Alabama forum out of the goodness of his purple and gold heart.

As for focused on the now, if I were playing that would be important, but I'm not, so it really isn't.

JMO

edit to say that I have no idea how it'll shake out. I suspect that Alabama will find a guy that will keep us contending for the SEC, but this unprecedented run will be over. We're lucky to have had the 2 best coaches ever in college football. It's not reasonable to expect the 3 best, at least in my lifetime. Well, history books do indicate that Wade and Thomas were damn good, so there is that.

Two very different philosophies that do not complement each other well.

You can have a big, fast suffocating defense and ball control football with explosive capability, or you can have HUNH fast paced action, with ingenious scheme/creative palycalling coupled with a lean, fast, bend but don't break D that needs to be endurance based as they will be out on the field more rather the O is doing well or poorly.

Hard to find the balance between the two. I think we've seen that identity crisis rear its head a couple times over the past couple years.

It is the CLK savant type of mind that can fully adjust scheme and playcalling within the capabilities of the O to attack vulnerabilities or meet the needs of the situation from game to game, series to series, that CNS needs. Riley doesn't have that. And, similarly, CLKs nor Joey Freshwaters grow on trees around CFB.

Im referring to a groomable assistant that can keep the train going using the same "process" and items associated. Not referring to Riley's style of play.

Prevatt, you lied after your first two words “I think.” After that I lost interest in your condescending diatribe of blabbering dribble but hey, rock on superstar.

And regarding the OP, Bama fans need to understand that the next coach will be a completely different human from Saban and will do it his way. There is no possibility of a coach coming in and continuing a Saban blueprint. Let the thought go.

The next coach will be the next coach. Hopefully he'll be good, but the days of Saban will be gone the day he retires. Some options at that time will be more similar to Saban than others, but it'll still be a completely different person who'll do it his own way.

Of course if you try to comprehend the OP, you'll see that it says nothing about being the same type of human as Saban.

re: Saban needs to find his version of Lincoln Riley
You said this:

quote:

Saban will have to groom his successor.

I do not agree that Saban will "have to" groom his successor. As a matter of fact, I don't know that he will have the ability to determine his successor all. Maybe. Maybe not. This is the University of Alabama, not the University of Saban.

Personally, I would love to have a Saban protege as our next coach. Jimbo Fisher would be at the top of my personal list, although I'm not sure what his age will be at the time Saban retires.

Having said that, your post in the OP clearly insinuates that you strongly desire and believe that it's obligatory that the next candidate take over the Saban reigns and do it the Saban way without interruption, and I'm saying that that's nearly impossible and is therefore not really worth discussing or desiring.

The next coach after Saban will be a coach who will do it his way, and the fanbase needs to understand that as soon as Saban retires, the Saban era is over. It can't be continued under a different guy.

Hopefully the next guy will be hugely successful, but it won't be a Saban clone nor will it be someone he "groomed" to be him.

Personally, I'd wager large amounts of money that the next hire will be a former Saban guy who we hire from another school. I doubt it'll be a guy we have on staff at the time. Granted, we could end up doing the "coach in waiting" thing so as to attempt to avoid a lag in recruiting in transition, but I doubt it - and I don't see any candidates on this current staff to be that guy. Just my 2 cents.

Also, it's clearly evident that I'm poopooing this topic. It's not because I want to discourage discussion on this board. I very much want to encourage discussion and I thank you for making this or any other new thread. I just dislike the notion of not living in and enjoying the present, and I don't understand the obsession with Bama fans' need to discuss who'll take over for Saban, as if to quell some fear of the future. Some day in the future, Saban will not be our coach - and it'll suck donkey balls. And no amount of discussion about that future unknown will make any of us feel better about it. It'll suck and that's just reality. Hopefully, the next guy will be successful, but I see no reason to focus on it now.

However, everyone should discuss whatever they want. Start whatever threads and let folks discuss it. But part of any discussion can be a critique of the validity, necessity, or interest of the topic. I've given my 2 cents, and every man should do the same.
