It is not mathematical, fair and logical to form your expectations of an outlier though. Saban's tenure is anything but the norm, not only in college football history, but even in Alabama football history. As many as we have won, it's still very unusual to do what he has done.

He realizes how fortunate he is and he'd very much like it if we did to. As much as he says he doesnt care what others think, thats the biggest lie of all. He's incredibly insecure and cares very much how others view him. He'd like it to be based on realistic expectations which I think is completely fair.

There are a couple of things I think that people really forget when considering Saban's accomplishment. Star rankings be damned, there is a great deal of parity between 18-21 year old athletes. Meaning it is incredibly difficult to win year in and out because of parity(see this year). Not only that but Saban has not been under complete control in one LSU title and 2 Bama titles. He had to have help. This doesnt take away from the accomplishment though. He had to have his team ready to take advantage of opportunity. But he knows how fortunate he is. I'd say he might be one of the luckiest coaches ever(and I'm okay with saying he "made some of that luck").

For all those reasons it is both wise and rational to look elsewhere for what a realistic expectation should be. It will not only put you square in reality, but it will have the added effect of lessening the sting of a bad year and increase the gratitude for another championship.

You're either a writer or a politician... or a writer for a politician.

Or a lawyer. A lawyer that's a writer for a politician.

I'll take honorable mention for cogent points written with less effort, though.

I completely agree with your post. I'm old and was at the University when Coach Bryant was still coaching. I've seen a lot of Alabama football, and I know that we're in a completely amazing time for our football program.

Games like the Arkansas game are maddening in a way because of the mistakes, but I LOVE seeing players play with emotion and celebrate great plays in close games. We don't have to win every game by two or three touchdowns and we don't have to be ahead the whole game.

Rocky Block is one of my favorite Bama memories, and we didn't have any idea whether we would win with just 4 seconds left. I don't want winning to be something that's just expected. I want it to be exciting and appreciated. I want the stadium to explode the way it did when Terrence Cody blocked that kick.

Thanks?

I'll give the credit to the person who had the most influence on how I think and write--Dr. Scott Hestevold from the UA philosophy dept. A great man and philosophy professor that UA is lucky to have. Dr. Richards (the chairman when I was there) was great too, but almost every philosophy class I took was taught by Hestevold (current dept chairman).
