There are, as Oats calls them, various “non-negotiables” in how his players must perform on the floor. Some fall under the general umbrella of effort, of a workmanlike approach to the game
The whole damn team will now enter the portal

I know he can't hurt us anymore, but it still makes me cringe to read this.

Sounds like Oats will play with 5 Lawson Schaffers on the floor before he puts up with loafing. Just what the doctor ordered.
The only thing I'm disappointed about is that next season is a year away.

Guys, this is not a bad hire. Don't listen to all the negative. We could have done a LOT worse.
My only concern with Oats is that 4 of his top 5 leading scorers were seniors. So you do kind of wonder who had the biggest hand in recruiting those guys, him or Hurley. So it's hard to say how well of a recruiter he can be since most of his younger guys weren't huge contributors.
But on the flip side of that, his best attribute could stem from that also. His first two years at Buffalo they went 37-30. The next two years they went 59-13. That speaks to player development. Even if those were Hurley's guys, he got immense progression out of them. You don't just turn it around like that without a good coach.
And coming from having a guy like Avery, where it seemed like every player regressed after each season, that will be a welcome change.

Man, the more I think about it, the more I think our roster is built pretty perfectly for what Oats wants to do offensively.
A great young slashing PG, some good outside spot shooters, no real big man in a lineup philosophy that really would rather have a long jumper than a big brute.
Get those boys back from the portal and leggo.

Per the Buffalo guy on the Rant, Oats was the recruiting guru under Hurley.

I think he is saying if our "good" players don't buy in we will still be OK...let Oats develop players who want to be there and want to work.
If it is players we already have, fine. If not, fine.

I'd be fine with Oats bringing his entire staff down here. We need an overhaul
Posted on 3/27/19 at 4:05 pm to biggsc
I’m not saying we shouldn’t try, I’m saying if they leave knowing that they will have to work harder then do we really want them?

Yeah, I didn't see that before I posted. There's so many comments coming in so rapidly that it's difficult to stay on top of them. Lol

Statistically (aka offensive metrics), Nearly every upperclassman on that roster has shown clear progression over the years from FR-> JR/SR
Whether or not they were recruited by Hurley/Oats, Oats made them into top 25 team caliber players.

LINK ]Alabama names Nate Oats its next men's basketball coach (BamaOnLine)

quote:
Alabama director of athletics Greg Byrne announced on Wednesday that LINK ]Nate Oats has been named head coach of the Crimson Tide men’s basketball program.
Oats, who was named the 2018 and 2019 Mid-American Conference (MAC) Coach of the Year and is one of 11 finalists for the 2019 Werner Ladder Naismith Men’s College Coach of the Year awarded by the Atlanta Tipoff Club, becomes the 21st head coach in the program’s 106-year history.
“We are thrilled to welcome Nate and Crystal Oats and their three daughters to The University of Alabama,” Byrne said in a statement. “I have been watching Coach Oats for the last few years as he has led the University at Buffalo to unprecedented heights. His commitment to developing the student-athlete both on and off the court was what really stuck out. As we spoke to some of the best college and pro basketball minds in the country, his name came up time and time again. Coach Oats will hit the ground running starting tonight, and we look forward to him having a long and successful career with the Alabama Crimson Tide.”
Oats comes to Alabama after spending the last four seasons at the University at Buffalo. While there, he led the Bulls to a 96-43 (.691) record, three MAC Tournament Championships and three NCAA Tournament appearances, including reaching the round of 32 in each of the last two seasons. As a result, he was named the league’s Coach of The Year and National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) District 14 Coach of the Year in back-to-back seasons (2018 and 2019).
“Coach Oats has an impressive background,” said University of Alabama President Dr. Stuart Bell in a statement. “He is exactly what we were looking for in this search. I’m excited about the future of Alabama basketball, and I know our fans are as well.”
This past year, Oats guided Buffalo to a 32-4 overall record and a 16-2 mark in conference play, leading the program to its second consecutive MAC regular season and tournament championships. The Bulls were ranked for 20 weeks in the Associated Press Top-25 throughout the 2019 season, which marked the first time in school history the program had earned a national ranking. Buffalo went on to climb as high as No. 14 in the nation which was the highest ranking by any MAC team in the past 40 years. Additionally, the 32 victories not only set a program record but was the most wins ever by any Mid-American men’s basketball program.
During the 2017-18 season, Oats led the Bulls to a record of 27-9 overall and 15-3 in the MAC. In doing so, he secured the Buffalo’s first ever victory in the NCAA Tournament, defeating No. 4 seed and PAC-12 Champion Arizona, 89-68, in Boise, ID.
