Can we at least all agree that now would be a good time for the state to stop celebrating Jefferson Davis's birthday?

I'm a right wing conservative, honor those that served guy and I've been saying it was time for years.

The soldiers of the confederacy are considered by law US veterans just like my Viet Nam veteran father. As a group, they served honorably in defense of their states (which at the time was a very big thing). Just as the average German, Japanese, Italian, Viet Cong, US Vietnam veteran, and on and on did. They earned the right of respect.

Davis, on the other hand, was a politician who displayed very few honorable attributes throughout much of his life - even at then end when leaders like Lee knew full well they could face execution they walked up to the victors and placed themselves into custody. Davis ran like a coward.

Frick him.

Also, it's stupid from a financial standpoint to have state offices closed on a day when everyone else at other levels of government are working. Should have ditched this one and made the day after Thanksgiving (on which every governor for at least the last 30 years has closed state offices) an official one.

Just drove by Hoover City Hall. One moron white couple holding a "#BLM" sign. More media than "protestors."

City of Hoover just announced a 7pm curfew.

no one complains about this because state employees are the only ones who observe it. Try talking to a black government worker about how badly they want to give up that "holiday."

I was a state government worker for 31 years.

We'll celebrate national #2 pencil day if you say you're going to let us stay home and get paid for it.

You don't have to give it up. Just rename it.

Wouldn’t surprise me.

That’s attempted murder at best and murder at worst.

They can do what they want with it. Only reason I knew about it is I have clients who are closed today. Would be better for me if it was gone. I hate obscure state and fed holidays.

Hoover, Hueytown, and Mountain Brook are the latest Alabama cities to announce curfews starting tonight.

Looks like 7-6am for these as well

quote:

Bessemer Mayor Kenneth Gulley and Police Chief Mike Roper said the curfew is a reaction to threats of violent protests in the city which are under investigation by Bessemer police.

“Unfortunately, we have received through social media what we believe are very credible threats against the city of Bessemer. All of us are saddened by the senseless death of Mr. George Floyd. But this is not the answer and not the way to honor and support Mr. Floyd and his family.

Honestly, it needs to just go away. It causes so much confusion - none of the surrounding states and virtually no city and county governments in Alabama are closed. Federal courts and other agencies are still working too so if you're involved with them it's a real PITA.

The ASEA would throw a bitch fest, but like I said earlier the day after Thanksgiving is an extra day that's been given informally for decades and everyone else is already closed that day. Make it official (thus keeping the same number of official holidays), get rid of the mess-everyone-up day in June, and move on with life.

Funnymaine was leading the charge to tear down the monuments, not vandalize the town. When Woodfin came down to urge the protestors to stop, Funnymaine made sure that he was at least heard and urged the protestors to concede and give Woodfin the chance to remove the statues safely and have a plan to do so within the next few days.

He had nothing to do with the violence and destruction of property outside of confederate monuments.

After some of the protesters remained at the park trying to bring the monument down, police chased them out. When they hit the streets and didn't disperse, the police decided that a few broken windows was not worth potential escalation or loss of life.

Seems pretty reasonable to me.

Thrown bricks are a deadly weapon from anywhere. Some of these people need to keep that in mind when they're acting out in a castle doctrine/stand your ground state.

I used to work in Finance for Bham City Schools. I know what you mean. It's a ghost town anytime there is even a hint of a holiday. "Teacher work" days are "use your vacation" days.

Montgomery mayor announced a 7 PM curfew.

I got an unofficial email from my military leadership stating this:

quote:

Word is that Montgomery is a target now. Capital building has been evacuated. Federal courthouse has been locked down and evacuated by federal marshals. Target at Eastchase is being boarded up. Protestors are supposedly arriving by buses today. It is rumored that Eastchase will be a target as well as upscale neighborhoods in the East side. Do what you need to keep your family and yourself safe. These are not people from Montgomery.

That ship has sailed.

He cannot move them unless he wants to saddle Birmingham with a $25,000 PER DAY fine.
