Hootie Jones
Ronnie Clark
Deionte Thompson
Eddie Jackson
Rico McGraw
Shawn Burgess-Becker
Ronnie Harrison

Zero quality experience among them, but there seems to be a good amount of talent. We may see some other guys move over to safety, or at least get a look. This position has me the most worried for 2014.

I think we should give that little dude who grabs the tee on kickoffs a shot.

I wonder if they will consider moving Geno Smith to safety?

I almost started this same thread this morning.

One guy you forgot to mention is Jabriel Washington. I expect him to have a niche role in the secondary. Probably as a deep safety. He played some qb in HS so maybe he can help with play calls when he is on the field.

I like hootie Jones to be a starter. His size and coverage skills are ideal. Reminds me of kam chancellor.

At the other safety spot I would like to see Eddie Jackson move to safety. I think it gives us experience and versatility. Also would free up some of the log jam at CB. Eddie plays the ball very well when it's in front of him but he will need to work on being a better tackler.

Hootie Jones and Geno Smith.

Where is Mo Smith playing?

He's at corner/star, but also in the Saban doghouse a lot. I think Geno and Mo Smith have a better shot at starting at safety than any of the freshmen.

Personally, I'd like to see Eddie Jackson and Hootie Jones at Safety.

I think we'll see Geno and Hootie though.

Jabriel Washington may end up with a role, which I'm not too pleased about, but whatever. Saban knows more than I do.

The only time I can remember Washington playing is when he gets beat.

Hootie Jones and Geno Smith.

Eddie Jackson takes hootie's spot when hootie moves to money.

Thompson has a shot being an EE but I doubt it. He will probably beat Jabriel Washington out for deep safety in dime

Exactly.

But I just feel like Saban will play him anyway.

I remember him making quite a few plays. After he got run over on KO coverage earlier in the season, I remember he bounced back the next game and made 2 or 3 good plays on D.

Of our returning safeties, Geno and Washington played the most last year so I wouldn't be surprised if they started next year

Washington will be OK as a deep safety. I think he had two interceptions this year. He's a good athlete and he knows the system. We need all the experience we can get back there.

eta: he had 1 interception, 17 tackles

Geno and Hootie.

Washington will probably continue to be the deep safety with 6 DBs but I'm hoping someone else steps up to fill that role. The corners opposite Jones certainly had their struggles and Washington was right there with them. From a size/athleticism standpoint he doesn't seem to have much upside.

So you guys would rather have one of the true freshman out there than a RS SR?

I want the experience. We are already replacing the two regular starters at safety. Like it or not, we need Washington to have a role on the defense.

Geno has experience. Probably more playing experience than Jabriel. Get Geno out there, and let a young, talented guy like Hootie get on the field and get experience.

But again, Saban knows more than I do.

Hopefully Geno and Eddie starting with Hootie, Mo, and one of the young guys in the rotation. I think Eddie draft status and the team would benefit if Nick moves him to safety. Eddie's frame and leaping ability with Geno's coverage skills would allow us to run a ridiculous amount of stunts with our front seven, it's scary.

Has there been any indication that Eddie is moving to Safety?

Just fan speculation. We need to get Cyrus/TB/EJ all on the field, and EJ works better at Safety than TB.

With all due respect to all the returning safeties, but there's not a single one of them that inspires a ton of confidence, at all. Both Geno and Washington have coverage issues, and I don't really recall them making many plays around the line of scrimmage either.

Experience means a great deal, but at some point making plays needs to happen. If not, take your lumps, a la Milner 2010 style, and get the young guys on the field.
