Actually Alabama and Missouri have a very similar resume in basketball. However, they have a lot more consistency the last 10 years.

Poster on BOL said he heard Fine baum say that Bama will make an offer to Marshall that may be hard for him to turn down no matter how much he loves Wichita State. He also stated that Nick Saban will be part of the process.

I really don't want Greg Marshall. Just like hiring Anthony Grant all over again IMO. We need someone who is a proven national recruiter.

How is this like hiring Grant? Grant had three years before we hired him. Marshall has 17 seasons and has had some solid performances at Wichita State. I'd imagine he'd be in a better recruiting position here as well.

Go look at his tournament record. There is nothing remotely close to Grant.

No different from Grant when we hired him IMO. Mid Major is very different IMO. If he can recruit im all for it.

Marshall would be a very good hire. But is he worth $4 million? I'm not sure. I think he has very little upside. What you see is what you get: a very solid fundamental coach who will get us into the tourney yearly, and make it to the Sweet Sixteen most years but probably no further. He won't recruit superstar players just solid team basketball guys. Now that's a helluva lot better than what we've had, but couldn't we get the same performance from Miller or Jacobson for a lot less money and a higher upside? I don't think either of those guys have peaked. I think Marshall has. I may be totally off base here, but that's the way I see it. Marshall would be a good hire, get us on the cusp of greatness, but never over the hump. He wouldn't be a bust, but I don't think he's the grand slam some think he is. Miller and the other guys are much riskier, but there's the potential for better rewards as I see more upside to them.

Everybody wanted Grant when he was at VCU. Its going to take more than Xs and Os. Is he going to promote the program or is he going to shut everyone out like Grant.

Nevermind see a lot of video on youtube. One video of him is a lot more than ive ever heard from Grant the whole time he has been here.

How many coaches DON'T coach at a mid major before they get a big time job?

There are 12 active head coaches with a ring.
-Six coached at a mid major prior to coaching a major program (Pitino, Donovan, K, Tubby, Calipari, and Self)
-Larry Brown was an ABA and NBA head coach before he got the UCLA job
-Steve Fisher was basically an interim HC that won a title and was given the permanent job
-Boeheim and Ollie are coaching their Alma Mater
-Izzo and Roy were longtime assistants for a HOF coach prior to getting their HC jobs.

Just saying weve been down this road before IMO. If possible id like a coach who is winning right now and at a bigger school.

at a bigger school.

VCU is the largest school in the State of Virginia.

Well, we're not Kansas, Indiana, Kentucky, North Carolina, Duke, or any other big time college basketball name. Getting a proven winner at a big time school is easier said than done. Outside of Howland, I can't think of a single coach that is a proven winner at a big school we'd be able to land. Our options are a big name at a mid-major or an assistant at a big time program.

Then you're going to be sorely disappointed because we can't get one of those guys.

I disagree.

What do small schools like UNF, Robert Morris, Wichita State, etc have that we don't have? We have a huge advantage over those schools both in terms of financial resources as well as being in a relatively average conference.

We absolutely have the chance to bag an established coach.

I don't consider Robert Morris, Wichita State, etc. to be "bigger schools". We have to go the mid-major route because we aren't going to pull an established winner from too many P5 schools.
