If you can get Gregg Marshall, you do it. The University has $4 million to burn, that's not an issue.
As much as I like Archie, I would take Gregg over him every single time.

An article listing some top coaches salaries. Some of them are surprisingly low. For instance, why not go after Sean Miller at Arizone??

I'd be happy with Marshall or Prohm for that matter, but if they are truly willing to go as high as $4m, then you can get a top 5 coach in CBB for that money.
I've not seen a prop bet, but I bet Prohm is odds on favorite.

because Sean Miller wouldn't leave Arizona for Alabama.
Where do people keep hearing a 4mill salary? That's a frick ton of money for a bball coach.

Doubtful...the 5th & 6th highest paid coaches are Billy Donovan & Tom Izzo and both make $3.9M per (don't see either one of them leaving)...and the ones above them (Self, Calipari, Pitino, and Coach K) make considerably more than that...
There are several others who make much less that I think can coach at a level close to them (Miller/Arizona, Wright/Villanova, Ryan/Wisconsin, Bennett/Virginia, Few/Gonzaga)...but, while I think they'd leverage it to get a raise at their current school, I don't think they'd seriously consider leaving their situation for Bama's...I might be wrong though...

Just saying weve been down this road before IMO. If possible id like a coach who is winning right now and at a bigger school.
No we haven't and shut up. Even Gottfried had only been at Murray State for 3 year and had 0 NCAA tourney wins. Hobbs? A promoted assistant... Wimp, he's was GOAT also a promote assistant. Hell, even C.M. Newton coached lowly Transylvania (to 169–137 and one NAIA tourney) before coming to Bama.
Marshall has the one of the best pre-Bama resumes of anyone we've ever had just considering his Final Four appearance alone.

Marshall would be a very good hire. But is he worth $4 million? I'm not sure.
Why do fans care about salary or "overpaying"? Do you think tix will be lower if pennies are pinched on coaching salaries. The program has the money as does the athletic department. Spend, spend, spend.

Because if we're spending $4 million for a basketball coach, just making the tourney won't cut it. You'd better win and win a LOT, not right away, but by year 5, the Sweet Sixteen better be a given...just saying.
As for the UK fan that laughed about going after Miller at Zona, what does it cost to ask? He's not making anything close to $4 mill. You don't think that would make him pause? Even if just to get a bump at Zona? That kind of money might not get you Pitino or Izzo or Cal, but it will make the next tier of coaches: Roy Williams, Mark Few, Bo Ryan, Sean Miller, Tony Bennett, at the very least pick up the phone and call their agent. And who knows, maybe one of them would like a new challenge. You never know until you ask. Coaching is a business first. You can talk about how much someone loves their job, but you double somebody's salary, and most people will think hard about an offer. To give you a recent example, Saban at least flirted with Texas because of the obscene offer that was reported they would make. Can you blame him? Most coaches are hired to be fired and they know that, so they have to take care of themselves and their families and money is the best way to do that.

Understand, but I didn't say we could get one of the top 5 highest paid coaches. I said one of the top 5 coaches in CBB - Miller and Few may fall in that category and $4M would be a massive raise for either.
Not to play debbie downer here, but I am a realist. Marshall is likely the biggest "Name" we'd have a shot at here and I'd be fine with him as HC - and I'd laugh at Goodman for saying "you aren't getting Marshall".

Tidesports says Smart and Prohm have emerged while I think yesterday 247 said Marshall and Crean. So I think we are still at the point where nobody knows.

I expect Bama to win a lot regardless. How much the coach makes in comparison to other coaches makes no difference to me. I don't care if Bama pays 50% more per win than other programs. Get a guy that gives Bama the best chance to win, 4mil/5mil I don't care, it won't hurt my bank account.

Greg Marshall took Wichita State to the Final Four where they lost the eventual champs in Louisville. They were undefeated last season and got absolutely screwed by the selection committee. Their 8 seed was Kentucky, who ended up making the championship game.
He would be the definition of a home run hire.

No the best way is to have stability. There is a reason a guy like Shaka Smart turned down UCLA and Greg Marshall has turned down every job imaginable. Schools like UNC, Duke, Indiana, and Kentucky all have the possibility of opening soon. Why risk it by taking a risky job that you may have no shot of turning around when you are already in a winning position atm.

Can you imagine how much VCU fans would hate us?

Point taken...but considering the top 6 paid coaches (Coach K, Pitino, Calipari, Self, Donovan, and Izzo) and their resumes, I think a very good argument could be made that they are the top 5 (or 6) coaches in CBB...

I didn't give that as much credence as the CBS interview piece I read on Marshall a few days ago...seems that if Marshall leaves WSU, it'll only be for an already well-established program in a Power 5 conference, with money being a secondary factor...but, then again, that could've just been Marshall blowin' smoke/hyperbole...

Yes please. Would be an absolutely perfect fit. Fun system, great personality, and will be able to recruit.

Really?? Check out their salaries in that article I posted. I'm not saying we land any of them, but we damn sure could top what they are making at the moment. They'd stop laughing when we started waving $3.5 mil around. I'm not crazy, I know those aren't realistic choices, all I'm saying is we are spending enough money to live in that same neighborhood. Why not try and do it??

Which one of the guys do you really think would leave where they are at to come to Alabama?
And why do you think that their pay wouldn't be matched?

Shaka is gonna scare a lot of Bama fans just because the school he is coming from. I'd love the hire though. Light years better then Crean, Howland, Prohm etc
