Ohio State just cancelled the Illinois game due to positive Covid tests. Does the B1G still have the 21 day policy? They might not get another game in if so.

One more game gets cancelled for Ohio St and they can't play in the Big Ten Championship Game and they can kiss the playoffs goodbye.

Ohio State vs. Illinois canceled due to COVID-19 (247Sports)
quote:

After the Ohio State Buckeyes have dealt with COVID-19 issues throughout the week, a final determination has been made about their game against Illinois on Saturday. On Friday night, Ohio State announced that its matchup with the Fighting Illini has been canceled.

On Friday, the Buckeyes revealed that head coach Ryan Day had tested positive for the virus, and the team was delaying the trip to Champaign until Saturday morning. Just hours later, the team made the announcement that the game had been canceled.

This cancellation puts Ohio State one more away from potentially being eliminated from Big Ten Championship contention. Per conference policy, teams must play at least six games in order to be eligible for the conference title. The Buckeyes have played four with two games remaining.

Ohio State's next matchup is currently scheduled for Dec. 5 against the Michigan State Spartans in East Lansing.

Note: If a B1G team plays fewer games than the avgerage games played by all B1G teams, it is ineligible to to play in the title game.

We will see what happens. I can’t see how they get Michigan State in if they had enough positives to cancel this one. The Ohio State boards caught wind of the positive test early this week so I am assuming they got more positives as the week went on including Coach Day. They were trying like hell to get this one in.

Here is the full press release from OSU:

Ohio State / Illinois Football Game Cancelled

Ohio State pauses team-related activities; game was set for noon Saturday at Champaign, Ill.

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The football game between No. 3 Ohio State University and the University of Illinois, scheduled for this Saturday at 12 noon (EST) in Champaign, Ill., has been cancelled by Ohio State University after further positive tests for the coronavirus were discovered after a round of PCR testing this afternoon.

The Department of Athletics has paused all team-related football activities. The decision to cancel and pause was made jointly by Director of Athletics Gene Smith, University President Kristina M. Johnson, head team physician Dr. Jim Borchers and in consultation with the Big Ten Conference.

“We have continued to experience an increase in positive tests over the course of this week,” Smith said. “The health, safety and well-being of our student-athlete is our main concern, and our decisions on their welfare will continue to be guided by our medical staff.”

The program will resume its team activities when its medical staff determines it is safe to do so based on protocols established by the Big Ten Conference.

This season is on the brink. Bama needs to get all 11 wins and as many undefeated teams need to lose as possible.

If the playoffs get cancelled, hopefully the AP will award Bama the title.
