Interesting that Chambers county has 81/82 cases test positive. By far the highest % of positives

Phil, I don't know about the town where you live, but in a place like Montgomery there is absolutely a bunch of congregating going on in the middle of the night.
Of course, the curfews and executive orders won't stop it tomorrow any more than it did yesterday.

Good afternoon ladies and gentlemen. I am excited to say that my oxygen saturation is up to 95 and my cough is better as well. There is talk of me going home soon. They are still worried about my heart but I think it will be ok as well. So I have been here over a week now and looks like I may be here another few days and then be quarantined at home for awhile after that. I feel pretty damn good even if I am sick. The doctor agrees that you guys supporting me helped with the healing process and it as also raised my morale. I may be a dick next footballing guy season whenever that may be but until then I owe it to you guys to return the love so no trolling from me for awhile unless it's in self defense. I still have no cravings for cigarettes and that in itself was worth getting sick.
I am only supposed to have two weeks vacation but I have about used it. The boss is extending it to one month. If I miss more than that I will be eligible for unemployment but I hope I am cleared by then.
All in all the virus did cause me a lot of grief but only because my lungs were already in bad shape. I still kicked its arse with some help from the fine folks of BMC hospital here in Birmingham. I am 44 yrs old and I am 6'1" tall and I weigh 160 pounds so it would have been a breeze imo if my lungs had been in better shape. Wicked virus but easily defeated if you are in reasonable physical condition.
Just stay smart guys and don't go out unless you have to. Be vigilant keeping your distance when you do need food etc and have to go out. The sickness may not be a burden on most of you but we all have loved ones to think about should we get them sick.
The nurse said said they aren't allowed to talk about any covid patients or as about hospital supplies etc. I am curious about the situation upstairs in ICU but they aren't allowed to discuss it with me.
Thanks again to all of you who cheered me on and prayed for my condition. You guys are pretty rough to people on the keyboard but I have seen a good deal of integrity dripping from lots of you during a crisis. True colors have shown through even by some of you who otherwise act like assholes at times. God bless you all.
Update from Data. Sounds like he’s close to being home

The measure they are using is whether the states have implanted stay at home orders. The orders aren’t going to stop a lot of people from going outside

True but I assume some is businesses shutting down too. Reeves didn’t do it quick enough over here, Especially in a town like Jackson

Having some states lock down and other states not lock down is like having a peeing section in a swimming pool.
Amen!

Jefferson County does have a world class hospital. Without UAB, Alabama would be in serious trouble.
My specialists and their staff at UAB have been amazing, even with this pandemic going on. When I need anything from a prescription change to an FMLA form, a doctor has taken care of it in roughly 30 minutes. They also utilize technology properly.
I can't say enough good things about my experiences with UAB.

This is America?
"Those who would give up Essential Liberty
to purchase a little Temporary Safety,
deserve neither Liberty nor Safety."
You know, I'm a huge Ben Franklin fan, but this quote is way out of context.
From Benjamin Wittes, a senior fellow at the Brookings Institution and the editor of Lawfare:
quote:
WITTES: The exact quotation, which is from a letter that Franklin is believed to have written on behalf of the Pennsylvania General Assembly, reads, those who would give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety.
SIEGEL: And what was the context of this remark?
WITTES: He was writing about a tax dispute between the Pennsylvania General Assembly and the family of the Penns, the proprietary family of the Pennsylvania colony who ruled it from afar. And the legislature was trying to tax the Penn family lands to pay for frontier defense during the French and Indian War. And the Penn family kept instructing the governor to veto. Franklin felt that this was a great affront to the ability of the legislature to govern. And so he actually meant purchase a little temporary safety very literally. The Penn family was trying to give a lump sum of money in exchange for the General Assembly's acknowledging that it did not have the authority to tax it.
SIEGEL: So far from being a pro-privacy quotation, if anything, it's a pro-taxation and pro-defense spending quotation.
WITTES: It is a quotation that defends the authority of a legislature to govern in the interests of collective security. It means, in context, not quite the opposite of what it's almost always quoted as saying but much closer to the opposite than to the thing that people think it means.

Scrolling CNN earlier: "Arkansas governor states stay-at-home order not needed in his state."
Three articles down, "Trump approves state of disaster declaration requested by state of Arkansas."
So Arkansas is somehow in a state of disaster, but simultaneously not bad enough to need a shelter-in-place.
OHHKAY.

Do we know the difference between "reported deaths" and "died from illness"? Is one suspected and the other confirmed, or what?
ETA: Found the answer:
quote:
Reported Deaths and Died From Illness represent the number of individuals who have a positive lab result and are now deceased. To count a person who died from COVID-19 disease, the medical record of the deceased person has to be reviewed by a physician and Infectious Disease and Outbreak staff. Once review is complete, if the death is attributed to COVID-19, the individual will also appear in Died From Illness. Reported Death totals are cumulative and will never decrease.

1543 cases, 212 hospitalized, 41 reported deaths, 26 confirmed deaths from Covid-19.

No. The rate of those needing to be hospitalized has been pretty consistently running 10-15%. Earlier info had about 40% of those needing ICU level care and about 1/3 of the ICU cases needing to be intubated and on a vent. Looks like the hospitalized rate has stayed consistent. No idea if the other rates needing higher level care have changed.
