Tuition is due today. (August 10)

Once everyone is paid up, I'm expecting the University to announce that all classes this Fall will be online only soon.

Am I just being too cynical, or am I going to be correct?

Wouldn't surprise me. Should have announced that it will be online only a while back, but the university will do damn near anything for a buck.

They'll have classes until the first COVID case is confirmed. Then - they'll send folks home. Gotta show you at least tried!

I don't see this coming. There was a ton of effort, time, and money put into getting classrooms, auditoriums, and scheduling ready for this term. I would be surprised if everything is online.

Even if they’re not planning on it, if there’s an uptick of cases on campus they will

Not everything will be online. One of my friends daughters goes to Auburn and all of her classes but one is online. So bama will probably follow suit but I don't think it will be 100% online, but damn near it

There’s going to be huge issues with that too. My daughter is on campus now doing rush virtually. Less than half the students are back on campus. Fewer still are using the Wi-fi for anything other than streaming entertainment and...rush. Roughly 2300 girls are rushing and its all via Zoom. There have been numerous reports every session of spotty wi-fi and technical problems. Now imagine 35,000 kids trying to take virtual classes via the same systems. Cluster frick of epic proportions coming.

Couldn't they just withdraw from all the classes if they wanted to? You have a certain period of time to drop a class, right?

And do what? Yes, technically you are correct, but take my daughter for example; she's got a presidential scholarship. She has to take 12 or 13 hours to be full time or she loses it. The regular student could, I guess do that, but there will still be some lost monies to other items that won't be fully refunded. At this point, you're pretty committed to school.

yes, but she would be there whether they announced online classes before or after tuition. Its not like she got tricked into paying tuition, then they switch to on line classes. But they will definitely have to have these on line classes to free up enough space in the class rooms for the so called social distancing. There will always be a significant percentage of students that would rather do on line than have to get up and go to the class room, anyway. As long as they are away from their parents, all is good.

Actually, there have been many parents complaining on the Bama parent groups on Facebook about that very thing. There have been quite a few classes that when registered for, were either face to face or hybrid that have since been switched to online. Many parents have complained that their kid has no live classes left or only one live. Daughter has been fortunate so far in that she's got a couple of online only ones, but several have remained hybrid or live. The one that is completely puzzling to me is her chem lab which is 100% virtual. Of all classes that need at least a portion of live instruction, I would think labs would be one of them.

No, the cynical part would have been to add in that they will cap off the bait&switch with exorbitant tech fees added in for each online course.
